“Sigale-gale sculpture”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2014

Sigale-gale is really a very high heritage value history. Starting from the later legendary folk tale to the rest of the world and now Sigale-gale is a tourist no 1 destination in every visit of tourists visiting the island of Samosir precisely in Tomok. See you there..

It took 3-4 hrs from Medan City to Parapat and get ferry to get across tomok, it would take about 40 min but you have to book early because very long Que to get across, it may take 2 hrs to wait so prepare your drink, snack, laptop, notes or what ever to chase away boredom. Enjoy your travel once your reach Samosir islan and you will see magnificent heritage inherited hundreds years ago.

“Lake Toba - Serene and Splendid”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2014

Excellent place to sit back and relax. Enjoy the natural beauty, rolling landscape and peace.

Detailed itinerary below.

Friday:
1. Flight from Singapore to Medan @ 10 am.
2. Arrive in Medan @ 11 am.
3. Take taxi from Medan to Parapat @ 12 pm for IDR 550,000/taxi (private taxi to ourselves - else it costs IDR 75000/person but the taxi is shared with 6 other people)
4. Arrive in Parapat at 4 pm.
5. Take ferry from Parapat to Tuk Tuk at 415 pm. (IDR 10,000/person)
6. Arrive in Tuk Tuk at 445 pm and at hotel at 5 pm (Bagus Bay)
7. Laze in hotel, meet other backpackers and visit Roy's Pub rest of Friday.

Saturday:
1. Get up, eat breakfast and laze in the hotel by the lake.
2. Rent bike (IDR 90,000/bike) and leave for hot springs at 12 pm.
3. Arrive at hot springs at 2 pm (multiple stops on the way to click pictures).
4. Leave from hot springs for the hotel.
5. Arrive at hotel at 4 pm.
6. Spend rest of the day drinking, enjoying Batak dance and songs at the hotel till 10 pm.

Sunday:
1. Walk around Tuk Tuk and click some photos.
2. Visit the tall white statue and click some more photos.
3. Do some water sports like banana boat and water scooter.
4. Leave for Parapat by Ferry at 4 pm.
5. Arrive in Parapat at 430 pm.
6. Take private taxi back to Medan hotel (Swiss-Belinn hotel) and arrive by 10 pm.
7. Sleep at Swiss-Belinn and depart at 5 am for airport.
8. Arrive at airport by 6 am (IDR 300,000/taxi)
9. Take 735 am flight to Singapore and arrive at 10 am.

============

Top Recommendations:
1. Stay at Bagus Bay in Tuk Tuk as it has decent rooms and a vast common area and you'll end up meeting a lot of people.
2. Arrive in Medan in the morning and leave for Tuk Tuk as soon as you land (don't stay overnight - there is nothing to do in Medan).
3. There are no ATMs but there are money changers who give you a horrible exchange rate. So carry extra IDR with you.
4. I don't recommend the hot springs but I do recommend the drive.

“Lake Toba = So Worth It!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2014

We flew into Medan's 'new' airport (KNO) and stayed in a hotel for one night since we arrived late. The next morning we hired a private car to take us the 5 hours down to Parapat (city on Lake Toba) where we then caught the hourly ferry to TukTuk. If I did it over again, I would pre-arrange transportation direct from KNO airport straight to Parapat. If you arrive later than 6pm (last ferry) then stay at a guesthouse in Parapat, taking the AM ferry to TukTuk. I say this because I feel like we wasted one night and several hours driving to Medan, instead of just going to Lake Toba first! Anyways - Lake Toba is simply amazing. The people are extremely friendly and honest (prices usually negotiable though) and genuinely happy. The water in Lake Toba is quite clear and many guesthouses in TukTuk or Ambarita have good shorelines for swimming. There's no sandy beaches FYI. The atmosphere around Lake Toba is very relaxed, so bring a hammock and book and chill out for a few days/weeks. We rented motorbikes and drove all the way around Samosir Island, which is also amazing. It was the best way to see spectacular views of Lake Toba on our own schedule. It takes 7-9 hours depending on how fast you go and how many stops you make, lunch, etc. Overall, we spent 3 nights at Lake Toba and it was good for us, since we were headed to Bukit Lawang next for jungle trekking. But, you could easily stay at Lake Toba for one week or longer if you needed some serious relaxation time.

“The best time to visit is when "Lake Toba Festival" held.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 26, 2014

Lake Toba Festival is a historical tradition to preserve Lake Toba environment and to preserve cultural creativity of Lake Toba communities."

Lake Toba Festival (Festival Danau Toba, FDT) will be held in the third quarter of every year. The event was previously named Pesta Danau Toba (PDT).

More than just a feast, the event would certainly be more interesting.

“Lake Toba, "a must see" destination”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2014

As it has been written by many reviewers, it is not pretty easy to get to Lake Toba .It take around 4 hours from the new international airport KNIA by chartered car. Yes, it is a bit boring along the way. But, as soon as you arrive at this lake, a dramatic scenery compensated for your weariness. You will get refreshed...cool and feel like in heaven
