“Not great for honeymooners”
Reviewed November 18, 2008

We stayed at the Kempinski for our honeymoon in August. We booked last minute and in hindsight our search for a secluded quiet honeymoon was probably wrongly directed towards Gozo.

Its a pretty island but the hotels are so far from the beaches and there is literally nothing to do.

The hotel was nice, but the food was repetitive with no daily specials etc.

The most dissapointing element was that there was no special emphasis on the fact that we were honeymooners, no one made any effort or congradulated us, with the exception of a bottle of wine in the room on our arrival. Compared to friends reports of honeymoon hotels else where in the word it really let us down.

The breakfasts are very good but not if you have them delivered to your room, which are terrible. Its expensive, however the Spa staff were fantastic and they do offer fantastic treatments

Its a nice quiet hotel if you want to lie by the pool only, and never want to see the beach, but I would not recommend it at all for honeymooners.

I would also not recommend it for one week as the car and ferry trip is too long to make it worth it.

A dissapointing honeymoon.

We have just returned from a long weekend break in this hotel. We actually live in Malta and my husband wanted some 5 star luxury as a birthday treat for me. We have a 4 year old daughter and booked a family suite: that is two large bedrooms connected by a living/lounge area. The rooms were very impressive ,all spotlessly clean and the fascilities superb: plasma tv in every room , power shower and jacuzzi bath. Serviced daily by friendly pleasant staff. The service at the hotel was great , not stuffy and stand offish. Everyone was lovely to our daughter and made a point of looking out for her. The hotel has three lovely outdoor pools ( although too cold for us at this time of year) and a good size indoor pool which we all loved. The hotel is situated at San Lawrenz and in the contryside, although not on the sea it does have sea views in the distance over a lovely valley view
The food at the Ortolan restaurant was great and the buffet breakfast lovely. Cannot praise it enough and we will be back in the summer to enjoy the pools

We have just returned from 5 days at this lovely hotel. It was very quite and peaceful. There was no rush for sunbeds - plenty available and the staff are the best we have found anywhere. Nothing is too much trouble. The bedroom (standard) was very spacious with nice balcony - room serviced about 3 times a day. Breakfasts are buffet style with everything you could wish for. We were collected at the Airport in a Peugeot 607, taken over by boat and delivered to the hotel in real comfort. Hotel arranged all of this. No complaints about the food at all as there is a choice of an Italian Restaurant and a rather more up market one. However, we chose to eat out for most of our time there. Ta Frenc is well worth a visit, the food is delicious, if a little pricey. It was the best Pork Fillet I have ever tasted, but do order a bowl of chips if you are hungry as the potato portions are quite small. Hondoq bay is worth a visit, for swimming in the bluest water ever. Very safe for children.

We spent in this hotel four days in the middle of September. Our overall impression was positive. We were satisfied with size of the room, cleanness, the breakfest bufet and the approach of the staff. Very beautiful is also the pool area with many palms and trees. I also welcomed cheap internet access in all rooms via Wi-Fi. The hotel also arranged for smooth transportation from Malta airport to hotel and back,

We were not so impressed by the following things: rooms equipment, long distances inside hotel, the position of the hotel (could be closer to the sea), car rental included in our tariff (car without A/C).

I was disappointed by the level of indoor welness/spa facitilities. I am a big fan of welness hotels and was looking forward to this but the level of this facilites in this hotel was rather low.

Pricing: I understand that the five star facility does charge five star prices but taking into consideration all circumstances I would expect the prices to be 25% - 30% lower than actually charged.

We had a wonderful two weeks at the Kempinski in August for our honeymoon.

The staff were very helpful, polite and friendly, and in general the service was excellent. It was slightly slow in one of the restaurants (the bar) but otherwise was very good.

We did get slightly sick of the food as there is only one restaurant in the nearby village and we didn't have a car so we were stuck with the hotel - but the Italian is lovely, the pool bar is very good for a quick lunch, the bar food is good, room service basic but well presented and swiftly delivered, and the main restaurant is absolutely gorgeous, although we didn't enjoy the themed nights (thankfully they don't happen too often) as much as the normal menu. It's pricey (2 mains plus 2 desserts plus a bottle of wine can easily top 100 euros) but worth it for a treat.

The pool area was lovely, although one of the pools was inexplicably closed. The children's pool was far enough away for us not to be bothered by the noise and the bar was lovely - staff would often bring round cold flannels, slices of watermelon or iced tea, all complimentary. They only serve one variety of beer which did give my husband a bit of a dodgy stomach though - it's called Cisk and perhaps best avoided!

The room was lovely, with an absolutely gigantic bed, very nice bathroom, and a shaded balcony with views of the pool.

The hotel runs several courtesy buses a day to various locations around Gozo and we used it to go to Victoria on one occasion which was really great - it was a feast day and there was horse racing in the streets and a real carnival atmosphere. Everyone in Gozo seemed very friendly and not tourist-phobic, which I wouldn't have blamed them for if they had been as there were a lot of us!

The hotel also organised for us to go on a boat trip around Gozo and Comino which was extraordinarily beautiful. It was a basic boat with basic food but it didn't matter for the chance to swim in the Blue Lagoon and explore Comino.

We are not used to 5* hotels but this certainly ticked every box for us - it was luxurious but not stuffy, and there were people of all ages there. There was one family who were quite rough (cue obnoxious drunk Englishman swearing at his wife from the otherside of the pool - not exactly pleasant for the rest of us pretending not to notice) but everyone else was very pleasant and there was a real mix of nationalities - lots of English, French, Italians, Germans etc.

Overall we really loved our stay and would definitely go back - if we could ever afford it again!

  • Liked — Everyone was very courteous and made you feel welcome.
  • Disliked — We didn't actually dislike anything.

The St Lawrenz is a great place to stay if you are after a quiet relaxing stay, with a bit of pampering and privacy.
We stayed for a week which was about right, we were getting slightly itchy feet by the 6th day however.....

The island is small, fairly rocky and doesn't look like much at first but if you get into Victoria on a Friday night you really see the spirit of the place, it's great - I was more impressed by the buildings and locals than I have been by Rome and many other cities...

The hotel is spotless, the staff V friendly and the pool area outside is fantasic. Our room was nice, great Air Con - if you can ask for one which over looks the pool as they get the sun in the evening.

The spa was great too - not cheap, but really nice and quiet. Good gym, indoor pool, great tennis courts etc....

The biggest let down was the food at the hotel - not all bad but a bit hit and miss, and pretty overpriced too.
Eat at the Gazebo by the pool at lunch for a good light lunch. the main restaurants are pretty lame and take a fairly long time.

In the evening try 'Jeffreys' which is a ten min walk from the hotel (out the main drive, turn right) great food though again, be prepared to be there for a few hours!

Our other problem with the hotel was all the 'little charges' which really add up - you have to pay for the internet even just for half an hour, and you can't split your time into any more than one session which is frankly ridiculous. Also, the Laundry is expensive, don't bother !
If you play tennis you have to pay for the rackets then buy the balls outright....outrageous really, who wants to travel back with a tube of over-priced tennis balls?

anyhow, shout if you have any questions.
All round, a lovely hotel, just don't go with any spending restrictions!

For a change I was at this hotel on a holiday not business!
The Kempinski San Lawrenz Resort & Spa is a five star hotel and spa. The only trouble is that it isn’t! We rated it at a four star in reality. It’s a quiet hotel, but that was because it was running at 50% occupancy. The staff were very friendly in general they are warm and welcoming. Along those lines the staff took our issues with the quality of the food seriously. Our main issue in the hotel is the quality of the food. For a five star you would expect quality ingredients cooked well, what we got was mediocre cooking and ingredients. For example crab sticks in a sea food salad on an island in the med, hummm! Something fishy going on with that it think!

The pool area is very nice, clean, service is good and there is a very peaceful atmosphere around the pool, not flashy, more sophisticated. For travelers with physical disabilities this hotel impressed me. I did not see anywhere that was not wheel chair accessible.

We used the spa extensively; treatments are expensive unless you book a package deal of treatments. The Spa is not out of this world but most of the staff in the Spa were professional and helpful the treatments we of good quality but I have been to better spas with regards to ambiance and décor. Which in truth make up a large part of your spa experience.
