“Another lovely stay at Ta'Cenc”
Reviewed June 9, 2013

We stayed last year for 10 days and returned again this June for another 10 day stay. A truly unique hotel offering peace and tranquility in an amazing setting. It is not a 'modern' build 5 star and not for those wanting that kind of experience but it is charming and quirky and the perfect place to unwind and relax. We stayed bed and breakfast as this allows the opportunity to visit some of the great restaurants on Gozo, the hotel can arrange taxis and there is a good bus service with a stop just outside the hotel gates. The staff are wonderful, friendly and helpful. Needless to say we are planning on returning next year and this is from a couple who never go back to the same place twice!

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have been refurbished and have high speck bathrooms etc. think they are classed as...

Having just returned from a wonderful week at the Ta' Cenc, I feel I have to recommend it to every Malta-Gozo traveller there is. The Ta' Cenc is without doubt the most charming hotel on the islands.

This is in total contrast to what some of the critical feedback has been saying (disingenuous? Disgruntled competitor, trying to bash the old champion?). This is certainly not the polished, heartless plastic-5-star hotel, or the run-of-the-mill what-passes-for-luxury-these-days. The Ta' Cenc has real old world character, beautiful facilities in the most gorgeous of settings. It blends in so well with the unique landscape of the Ta' Cenc cliffs that you could easily miss it.

The rooms were very well-sized and, apparently, recently refurbished (the bathrooms alone could use an update, but that's just a tiny little issue). The bar, common rooms, restaurant etc. were elegant to say the least, and the spa seemed really inviting (we did not have time for a treatment).

All the staff were courteous, charming and, more often than not, funny and entertaining. We had lovely evenings with glorious food, a well-stocked wine cellar, and pleasant company.

I recommend the Ta' Cenc for every traveller who loves the quiet life, walking, enjoying the hotel, chatting to the other guests (generally older couples - this is a lightyear away from the hordes in Paceville). The hotel grounds alone make for a great day of walking and exploring. The Kantra Bay rock beach has just been refurbished as well and offers a great place to sit and enjoy a drink - swimming in that great rock canyon is purely for experienced swimmers and divers.

It is a great starting point for day trips around Gozo and Malta. Early June would be a great time to come - it is just on the verge of getting busier and the weather is still bearable. Like many of the other guests who have become regulars over the years, we will definitely come back.

Room Tip: Any room away from the poolside seems just perfect (and even the adult pool area is a haven of peace...

It is 5 stars but not worth 3 stars. The location is unique, but they need a major facelift and refurbishment. Everything is out of date. Even the staff. It is depressing indeed and shameful to stay there in that hotel. The food is not fresh and not presentable. Daylight robbery to stay and eat there.

Room Tip: Rooms are shabby and out dated. Even the smell.

Another visit to Ta 'Cenc and once again not disappointed. If anything the stay has to be rated as one of our best. We were welcomed like old friends, nothing was too much trouble, ALL staff are friendly and very efficient. Food served both in the hotel restaurant and on the terrace is of the highest quality and, equally importantly, served with a smile and a cheery word or two. Brilliant!!
The gardens surrounding the accommodation have improved since our last visit and whilst there was some work in progress it was completely inobtrusive, in fact, the mobile crane being used was the quietest I have ever come across.
Well done Ta 'Cenc, keep up the good work

Whilst set in a peaceful, secluded location both the hotel and grounds have a definite run-down 'seen better days' appearance. Upon viewing the hotel website we decided to upgrade to a trullo - what a disappointment!! The internal space was dark and depressing with a smell of mustiness and in need of an update. The room was not cleaned until late afternoon each day followed by an untidy bed turn down at 6pm. The bathroom was very dark, set in a 1970's time warp and the lighting was poor. The only + was that our outside terrace was spacious and secluded and the spa/internal pool was tranquil and picturesque. The gym was also in need of up an equipment upgrade.
We stayed on a half-board basis and found the breakfast buffet uninspiring with a very limited choice. The evening meal consisted of four courses which looked good on the menu but were bland with a distinct lack of fresh vegetables. The salad bar was a joke!! The desserts were awful - but the service was good!
On our last evening we requested an alarm call for 05.30 and we received this an hour late with the receptionist saying he made a mistake - just not acceptable.
We have extensive 5* accommodation experience and Ta Cenc failed on virtually every count. This is a 3* hotel masquerading as a 5*. We will not be returning.

I was fed up with my stay on Malta, so took the boat to Gozo, and then a taxi to the hotel (booked in advance). My room was very large and had everything you could want. There was a gym (which needs a little bit of upgrading), and a warm swimming pool and spa. The food in the restaurant was OK, and the service was fine. Walks from the hotel were interesting, and the nearby village was worth spending time in. Recommended for a weekend (or longer if you can). While there, a BBC unit was staying, so it must be good!

Room Tip: The rooms outside of the main hotel are best - and you can hear the birds singing.

We stayed at the Ta'Cenc for two relaxing weeks in early April and felt very blessed. The staff are very friendly and helpful, there are two lovely resident cats, and the facilities, food and amenities are all excellent. Victor Borges, the hotel owner, came round to make sure the guests were enjoying their stay. We enjoyed swimming in the heated (30%) outdoor pool in the early evening, and very much enjoyed our evening meals. In warmer weather, you can dine next to a 300 year old carob tree! The hotel is on a beautiful cliff top very close to the sea - and is great for walkers. Victoria is only 10 minutes away and the hotel have three times daily shuttle services. There was a free music festival in Gozo and Malta while we were there that we took advantage off. A beautiful hotel and great island to explore. We will be back!
