My only regret is that it's been a while wanting to treat myself and friends to Porto Vecchio, and left summer nights pass by, as such we had to dine inside because of rain and strong winds last friday night. I still like the decor inside, very good selection both at the bar and winery. We were welcomed by Walter who i happen to know whilst studying at the my workplace Institution of Tourism Studies and seen to our table nicely set, both linen and cutlery all detailed and in place. Pity a few fish on display because not much catch due to rough sea, but i still enjoyed my favourite calamari cooked in wine sauce as main, and cevice for starter which tasted heavenly.

We found this restaurant while we had time to kill before taking the ferry to Ċirkewwa - a dusty walk along the harbour front, with construction work going on at the time. The restaurant was a real find - welcoming staff and an attractive menu. The fish on offer were brought out for us to inspect, and having selected one of the snapper for two, we relaxed over a glass of local wine and a delicious bean spread while it was being cooked in wine. When it came, it was superb, and the vegetables served with it were also perfectly done. The view over the harbour added a pleasant backdrop to the meal, and the complimentary limoncello left us with a lasting good impression. The personnel and the food make this the best restaurant we visited on our tour of the Maltese islands.

After a week of staying in Gozo we were beginning to think that the food was OK but nothing more...until we ate at Porto Vecchio on our last day.

The setting over looking the harbour and across to Comino and Malta is lovely, admittedly you do see the ferry coming and going but this hardly ruins the view.

We sat on the terrace outside in the afternoon sunshine and enjoyed a good bottle of Maltese Sauvignon Blanc. Food wise we shared calamari friti, fettuccine with artichoke, chilli and Maltese sausage and then the mixed seafood as a main. All were excellent.

This came with the added bonus that the service was attentive and prompt (something that was missing in other restaurants).

Made me sad to leave.

Our meal was marred by the wine waiters insistence that wines we chose off the list were not available, and that the only wine available, apart from prosecco, was his initial recommendation, at 25 euros a bottle....
In the end we just had water with our meal, and were then left alone. Both starters and main courses took well over half an hour to turn up, but the food wasn't bad when it eventually arrived.

It is with great disappointment to read destructive criticism when one should be constructive, especially when one has the experience to review establishments! How can one say to "be careful here" just because he or she were recommended another wine as the one chosen was out of stock? The difference in price is irrelevant, as the final choice was yours to make.....we never, ever tell customers what wine to drink.....we can only recommend. We believe that to have your starter and main course in an hour is good enough when it's a known fact that all our dishes are freshly prepared.
