“brilliant stay!”
Reviewed July 13, 2012

My partner and I stayed self-catering last week (first week of July 2012) and we had a great experience. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful (especially Mandy-Jo who was on reception) they were always willing to give you information on what to see and do and how best to get around the island. Our room (a self-catering apartment) was lovely, brilliant size and we had everything we needed in the kitchen to be able to make our own food. The 2 bathrooms were a great size as was the bedroom and everything was spotlessly clean. The pool areas were lovely and clean and we used them quite a lot during our stay and the cave bar was a lovely feature. It was fully air conditioned which was great at there was a heatwave when we arrived. The location was great, the area wasn't overly tourist-y and was quiet at night, but beautifully scenic and safe to walk around late at night. There was a few grocers and supermarkets nearby (although they were a bit on the dear side) and some lovely and reasonably priced restaraunts a short walk away. There is a Go Dive Malta centre in the hotel which is a fantastic experience and I would strongly recommed the beginners scuba diving course to anyone who visits. There is also a bus stop very near to the hotel (less than 2 mins walk) and most buses come fairly regularly (although due to road works on the island the bus service can be hit and miss) The only thing about hotel location is that the area is extremely hilly and lots of steep steps everywhere, (although hotel does have a lift that goes down the hill it is on which is very handy for guests). And a slighty niggle about the room was some noise from the laundry room which we were beside, but it was nothing major and only really noticed it early in the morning. We would definately recommend this hotel for anyone staying in the Mellieha area. The Cross Keys restaraunt nearby was also excellent, we ate there twice.

Not our 1st visit to the Pergola and as always the staff were up to the usual high standard
Mary Jo on reception & Steve in the dining room at breakfast were very good.
My only faults with the hotel are the poor Air conditioning units in the room which need changing/servicing as they dont blow out cold air at all (needed when 35 degrees+ outside).
The rooms although furnished very well could do with a lick of paint .
The food was always piping hot & of good quality but the dining room is quite small so either go early or quite late!.
We booked a (Promo) room online but beware! the room we were given was VERY small with the smallest balcony in the world! but we were told this was what you got when booking a promo room but due to the intervention of a family member staying at the sister hotel Solana & the help of Mary jo on reception we upgraded to a larger room which was 100% better & as it was a self catering appt had a big fridge freezer ect.
All in all we enjoyed our stay at the pergola but a few changes would make it perfect.

Room Tip: Beware (Promo) rooms may be very small!!!! for £100-130 more upgrade to a self catering appartment...

My partner & I stayed half board 7-14 June, 1st of 3 wks holiday in Malta this year, have listed Malta many times but never to Mellieha. Only gripe is the AC, it could've been higher as very warm in room. That said, didn't spoil a lovely relaxing week in a nice hotel.
Thought the food was very good, varied and plenty of it, couldn't complain at all, there was always plenty choice. As for the staff, they were so nice, always friendly & helpful, both in reception & restaurant. Nice 2 see such friendly faces ! Special mention 2 Etienne.
Hope 2 return next year.

We stayed at the pergola for 10 nights. A lovely hotel based in a good location in the town. Breakfasts were on a par with other hotels we have stayed in. Only ate at the hotel once and that was the bbq night which was excellent.
Staff were all very friendly and helpful.
I found the pools too small and crowded for my liking but as it is a hotel based in the town i should have realised that before booking.Saying that the pools were always clean and well maintained.
Rooms were ok, fridge did not really get cold but a major downside is the fact the aircon was not working, although the temperatures did reach about 40 degrees it must reach these temperatures during the summer months on a regular basis?! other places we went into did have working aircon! The lack of aircon unfortunately led to lack of sleep!!
If you are just looking for a base to explore this stunning island the hotel would be fine, for relaxation around the pools i wouldn't recommend it.

Dear Guest,

We are pleased to learn of your overall positive experience, following your recent 10-day stay at the Pergola Club Hotel & Spa.

Where possible, we are constantly ensuring that the guest rooms are as comfortable as possible, even during typical heat waves that the Maltese Islands endure during the warm Summer months. We are very sorry if this was not the case during the duration of your stay and very much hope that this aspect will not hinder the opportunity of a return visit in the future.

While thanking you for having chosen our resort in the first place, we remain

Yours sincerely,

We stayed in this aparthotel from 9th to 16th June as a timeshare exchange. We were not supposed to get our room until 4pm but as we had a very early flight my husband e-mailed the hotel to ask if it could be ready early, we were told there was no guarantee but they would try. We arrived at 12.30 local time and when we checked in our room was ready and they had upgraded us from a studio to a 1 bedroom apartment! It was on the top floor with a fabulous view of the Church, Comino & Gozo. The apartment itself was very clean and well equipped, even washing up liquid, dishcloth & scourer provided! The bedroom was small in comparison to the living/kitchen area.
There are 3 pools one being indoor and the main pool was always busy, we never went to this one as the beds were very close together and we are not sardines!! There was a smaller pool which we went to & there was hardly anyone at it. At one point we had it to ourselves Fab!! We also used the rooftop pool at the sister hotel The Solana and that was nice. We did'nt eat in the restaurant as we prefer to go out so can't comment on this.
There are 3 lifts and one takes you down to ground level which was useful as this avoided climbing many steps especially in the heat. The location is good as a short walk takes you to the main street, shops, bars, restaurants and bus stops. You can walk down to the beach or take the bus.
We really enjoyed this aparthotel, it was very clean and the staff were very friendly & helpful the only negative we have to say is that the air conditioning was not great, especially in the bedroom and as the temperature was 34+ every day I did'nt get a good nights sleep! Apart from this we really had a great time and can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Request a room with a `sea view` as some rooms look out onto stairs.

Me and my girlfriend stayed here from the 27/6/12 until the 4/7/12 and very much enjoyed our stay for the most part. The hotel was clean, and looked great, very well decorated with very friendly staff and great amenities. There are 2 pools, which are nice for a dip when you get too hot. The main pool looks amazing along with the cave bar which I thought was very picturesque, you can also see a view of the bay and a beautiful cathedral which was nice.
The cave bar offered a variety of food and drinks which i thought were of a decent standard, and the prices were not too bad. It is also in a great location, close to a main bus line and the ferry service to the beautiful island of Gozo. The breakfast here is nice, but limited and was exactly the same every day, but that wasnt really an issue.
Our room was nice, had everything we needed and great storage, also a large balcony overlooking the smaller outdoor pool which was nice.
However one major flaw was the air conditioning... or lack of it, all we had was a fan and an 'air conditioning' vent which basically just pumped warm air around the room. This made the nights unbearable and we had more than 1 terrible nights sleep! We complained (politely) several times, eventually a maintanance guy came and said it was fixed, but there was no difference. We decided to just deal with it and enjoy the rest of our holiday as Malta is an amazing place! If it wasnt for this issue, I would have rated the hotel 4 or maybe even 5 stars but it did dampen our moods a bit.
Another minor complaint was that the small fridge was not very cold, so our drinks were never cold which was annoying as the weather was so hot, however if the air con had been fully functional I would have overlooked this point.
Overall a great hotel, but the issue with the air conditioning soiled an otherwise great hotel.

Stayed 3rd week of June in one bedroom apartment. The apartment was a very good size with a large fridge & nice hoilday furniture and terrace overlooking the main pool area.

Of particular note was the bath room which had been refurbished to a high standard with a nice white suit & moden tiling also a dual side and overhead shower with no shortage of hot water.

The hotel claim a 4 star rating and from our overall experiance the Pergola provide a good over all 4 star standard.

However as in all hotels opinions are affected by the room in which people are staying which in turn is related to the price they have paid.

As all ready stated by other travellers the staff through out are a credit to the hotel.

The swimming pool in front of the Cave Bar allthough not large is supported by the setting and seems to meet all the requirments. The Cave bar is a nice place for lunch time snacks and evening drinks.

The Barbacue night on Friday's deserves a special mention. The staff take a lot of pride in the lay out and presentaion of the tables around the main pool area. When the sun sets the setting is complet and supported by a very good selection of food followed by above average entertainment.

The sun bathing area with good sun beds (may be a little to close to gether) but with plenty of sun shades. In general no problem in finding the perfect spot.

Don't be put of by the comments as to the hotel lift system. (Really not a problem)

As to the food we were self cattering but had some meals in the hotel which were to a very good standard.

We had a couple of visits to the beach in Mellieha and hired 2 sun beds & shade for 10 euro the sea was so warm.

Our tip for the beach is to go from the bottom of the hotel walk across the bridge and cross the road for the bus stop. Best time for the buses are after 10.30 am they are not so full then.

Any bus coming through Mellieha will do / about 5 minutes ride. When you first come to the beach stay on the bus as it travels along the beach front and get of at the last stop the far end.

The last stop is when you pass the sailing club blue/ white building on the right ring the bell. The sun shades are orange with a good snack bar.

On the way back this bus stop is the first pick up for the beach and around about 5.00 pm there can be a lot of people waiting for buses you are first on.

For members of Access 2 Leisure we rate the Pergola very high and hope to return again in the future.

Room Tip: Ask for pool & sea view may cost more but wort it.
