“Great place although choose a room carefully”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2013 via mobile

We enjoyed our stay at the Solana. Great staff especially. We had to swap rooms though. If booking I'd advise checking where the room is; Road Side (very noisy), Valley side (quiet with some sea views from the balcony) or internal (balcony into a shaft!). What out about the balcony size as well as some of them are tiny.

We are just back from an indulgent 3 week stay at the Solana. We've been there many times before because not only do we love this hotel - and its staff - but we also love Malta and this area in particular. The Mellieha area has been designated as a European Destination of Excellence and it well deserves that accolade. Many of the buildings in the oldest part of the village have been beautifully restored- particularly in Parish Street which leads into the delightfully named Friends' Square. The streets are kept very clean and are very safe to stroll through at all times of the day and evening. As an 'older' couple we really appreciate this aspect of Mellieha. The Solana Hotel is our holiday 'home from home'. It offers everything we are looking for in a holiday. We cannot commend the staff highly enough. We are given a very warm welcome on arrival and nothing seems too much trouble to them. The reception staff are terrific and they willingly and cheerfully assist with all sorts of matters from change for the buses to information on sights to visit. All the staff throughout the hotel are great and they really contribute to the success of the hotel and make guests feel very welcome. Standards of cleanliness throughout the hotel are very high. Management keep a close eye on everything and are very approachable should a problem arise. The food is exceptionally good value and all tastes are catered for. The dining room staff are exceptional - efficient, cheerful and good fun! As well as the residents' dining room there is also an a la carte restaurant and a cafe bar, both of which offer a wide choice and very good value. The location of the hotel also suits us very much. Buses to the beach (5 minutes away) and to the Gozo ferry stop right opposite the hotel. The bus stop for buses to Valletta and the south of the island is only about 3 minutes' walk down the hill and of course on the return journey they stop just opposite the hotel- a great advantage after a busy day's sight-seeing! All in all we thoroughly enjoy staying at the Solana and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

We stayed as a couple for 10 days at the start of September in a studio room (1106) on b&b basis. Upon arrival we were greeted by Ekaterina who was friendly and very helpful as we knew we were early for check in (no point anyone moaning about it it clearly states the check in times on booking). We were given a welcome drink and given a key for the luggage room so we could go out around Mellieha. As we arrived on the 8th September there was a festival going on outside which meant a lot of people in the streets outside celebrating which went on all day and into the evening.
When we were able to collect our keys at 3pm we found the room spacious and clean. It was away from the front of the hotel which meant it was very quiet, although it didn't have a balcony due to it being an internal room it did have a sizeable terrace to use. Everything in the room worked and it was located close to the lifts and restaurant for breakfast. Other reviews have complained about the cost of the safe and having to pay for wifi, but if people really don't research where they are going to stay then they will have surprises like this. The safe costs €2 per night which is not expensive in anyway, and there is a deposit of €10 euros that will be returned on checked out. As for wifi it cost €1 per hour and can be bought in 4,8 or 12 hour blocks. Or if you're too cheap to pay this it's free at reception.
Breakfast had a decent selection and they will cook you fried eggs if you ask. We didn't manage to eat in the Tosca restaurant as we chose to eat out every night and the last night on Tuesday we forgot it was closed (our mistake). The pool areas are both clean, the indoor pool was barely used by anyone else. It's not heated but it was great to cool down in after sightseeing all day. The roof top pool got busy at times and the restaurant next to it means you don't have to go far for a drink.
The staff were all very friendly, even the cleaners would say hello. Amanda held a meeting for new guests on the Monday in which we had the opportunity to say if anything was wrong with our rooms or ask any questions about Malta which she would answer. There was also complementary food and drink here. My girlfriend booked a massage and she said the spa was very relaxing and the staff again very friendly. The cafe in the lobby area was also very handy with reasonably priced food and drinks and promotions on at certain times of the day, there is also a selection of ice creams.

All in all it was a very enjoyable experience, clean hotel, friendly staff especially Ekaterina who always had a smile on her face. The room and facilities were both clean and well maintained. Mellieha itself is fairly small but there are plenty of restaurants and shops about, the beach is a 15 minute walk away (downhill) or a 10 minute bus ride €12 for 7 days use all over Malta. Bugibba which is bigger and a more touristy area is also 20 minutes away on the bus. Would definitely stay here again.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at The Solana, we have previously stayed The Maritim (just down the hill) who seem to have lost the concept of customer service, in our experience. Not so at The Solana, from the 1st contact at check in to the last at check out, we were made most welcome and it felt genuine, Studio Room, clean, good bathroom, air con worked well, (take note Maritim) contained in a unit was a sink, microwave, fridge, hob, toaster, crockery, etc. small dining table two chairs, used the Sicilian Restuarant ( good) just about next door up the hill for a couple of takeaways and ate in, right on the door step are lots of places to eat ,shops, food stores, good size room, decor fine, portable tv a bit dated, on first floor, road side, (we requested this) the street is busy, cars, buses, traffic, not a problem to us, most other rooms are away from the road, if you dont want street life, balcony small, but okay, we had a really good stay because of the atmosphere around the hotel, you can check out what people find good and bad in other reviews, like the pool was too cold blah blah, my egg was too hard blah blah, we did not eat in the hotel as this was a bit of an experiment for us as self caterers ( so egg referance is not a Solana egg just to be clear) no where is perfect even if you pay a fortune, I will say that we found the hotel to be clean, the room worked, and we felt relaxed around the place, like you are wanted and valued as a customer = good holiday.
A special mention for Amanda (Duty Manager) who at a weekly gathering sat and gave us some valuable infomation about the hotel and was a credit to the hotel in her manner and approach to us as guests.
We will return. Thanks

Room Tip: The Solana is right on the road through the village, so seek a room away from the street if you need...

After a late night landing, we had a direct transfer from Airport to Hotel (40mins). On arrival at the Solana, Frankie at reception was very friendly & helpful in checking us in quickly and to our room.
We stayed in a junior suite with a street view on the first floor, half board. The room was well furnished and decorated and had all the amenities you would expect including hob, sink, microwave, fridge, cutlery. Bed was comfortable and air-con could easily be set to your own personal taste.

Cleanliness - top marks. The Solana prides itself on cleanliness through-out the hotel including pool & leisure areas.

We couldn't fault any member of staff, they were approachable, friendly and efficient. Maria especially who went out of her way to give information about the local festival and the best place to go to see the festivities. Malta's festas are a must see.

Food - wide range of food available, wide choice and good standard. Each night with a different theme e.g. Maltese night, Italian night. Although we stayed half board, the hotel were very flexible in allowing you to swap your dinner for a lunch.

We availed of the Spa facilities and were not disappointed. Great ambiance and treatments received thoroughly relaxing. Good value too.
All in all, exceeded expectations, would recommend to all. We would certainly return.

To dispel some negative comments posted by others: -
Noise - we had a street facing balcony. We did not have a problem with noise (I am a light sleeper), we found the balcony doors to be effective in reducing the traffic noise.

The Hill - The Solana does not advertise itself as a beach front hotel. The town of Mellieha is located on a hill, so to get to the beach does involve a 15-20min stroll downhill. Why you would walk, I don't know, as Malta has fabulous public transport. An all day ticket costs EUR 2.60 (adult), whereas a 7 day ticket costs EUR 12.00 - and this is valid across the whole island!!!

The Maritim -
I mention this hotel because we nearly booked this hotel, but chose not to based on reviews. We did call into it and well on first impressions it seemed grand. We went to the spa to enquire about their treatments and were ignored by the staff. We decided to leave rather than wait any longer. Leaving was not as easy! The numbers on the lifts for the different floors didn't correspond to the location listed! After going up & down and wondering around we eventually found an exit. Somehow we found ourselves at the exit on the other side of the road by the 120 Bar!

Room Tip: Some rooms do have inward looking balconies (i.e. wall views) - be sure to specify your requirements...

Stayed in one of deluxe studio rooms overlooking the main road. Room was cleaned every day which was nice.

Really noisy throughout the night and early in the morning. If you are a light sleeper I would definitely recommend you request a room not overlooking the road! I'm a deep sleeper and even I was woken up by the noise.

Ate in the italian restaurant of the Hotel...slow service, food wasn't great.. we ate in the restaurant of the Maritim Hotel down the road - great food/service/value! The cafe however in the Solana is really good for coffees and snacks.

Reception staff were friendly and the roof top pool & bar was nice.

The hotel location is alright. Mellieha is really quiet compared to Buggiba or St Julians..but the sandy beaches are in Mellieha so it depends what your after.

The beach is about a 20 minute downhill walk from the hotel, nice beach, 10 euro for two loungers and an umbrella. Get the bus back! Just make sure you get on the right bus back as not all pass the Solana.

While we were there the hotel had a minibus to take guests to Paradise Bay beach, at 9.30 am, (a 10 minute drive away) and it picks you up at 4.30pm. Tiny beach & gets really busy - 14 euro for 2 loungers and an umbrella. Bit steep.

No free WI-FI in the room and having to pay for the safe was a bit annoying.

Room Tip: Ask for a room which doesn't overlook the main road to the front of the building!

Dear Guest,

First and foremost may we take the opportunity and thank you for taking the time and posting a review on TripAdvisor, following your stay at the Solana Hotel & Spa.

We highly appreciate your favorable comments about our Reception Staff, Housekeeping Service and some of our Food & Beverage outlets. It is, however, equally saddening to read about your disappointment at our Tosca… Pizza, Pasta, Grill. We would like you to rest assured that albeit having limited feedback, our Tosca Team has taken the time to investigate what could have led to your disappointment.

It is also worth highlighting that while Wi-Fi in the rooms is indeed against a small charge, guests are most welcome to make use of the free Wi-Fi available in the lobby area.

We hope that your future holiday plans will bring you back to Malta and we will have the pleasure of welcoming you once again to the Solana Hotel & Spa.

Yours sincerely,

Arrived at airport 8.40 but did not reach the hotel until 11 and no food available as everything closes at 11pm. We were allocated room 1306 for our 3 week stay which was a "junior suite" at the front of the hotel - very noisy, so much so we did not sleep at all. Asked for a room transfer and had to wait until late afternoon the following day before this happened but had to constantly check with reception when it would be ready. There is a charge if 14 euros per week for the safe with a 10euro deposit which I thought was ludicrous given there is a safe in the room. The room allocated had an indoor balcony and was not a junior suite. The village itself was very quiet with the beach a good 20 mins from the hotel with a 1:4 drop. Public transport was sporadic and quite hairy, also expensive - 5.20euros for a couple going 4 stops. Whilst the beach was lovely there was a charge of 10euros for a parasol and two loungers per day which, again, we thought expensive especially if you intended to use this a lot. We did book an excursion to the Market through the Drifter rep in the hotel but this was awful - more like a car boot sale and cost 12euros each. Minibus which picked us up was great but the one taking us back did not have seat belts, was dirty, over-crowded with handles hanging off the back of the seats.
Food in hotel although plenty of it, was very repetitive. Wine was expensive compared to other hotels. Bar service in hotel at night was not good, usually one girl serving and certainly could not make a cocktail.
This was my first visit to Malta and did not leave me with a wish to return. The holiday cost nearly £3,000 for our 3 week stay and I feel we did not get value for money.
Footnote: The transfer time in the brochure was 40 mins but it took over 2 hours both from the airport and return to the airport.
