“Friendly hotel that you'll feel at home in right away”
Reviewed March 25, 2012

We arrived the day after one of the worst storms the island has had, so not the warmest start!

Our room was clean and tidy, unfortunately the air-con didn't do a great job of keeping the room warm, but after a call to reception, the maintenance guy checking the system, and then eventually Ekaterina on reception brought us up a portable heater, and all was sorted.

We stayed self-catering, so that we could pick and choose our meals. There's a couple of supermarkets and stores right opposite the hotel for provisions, and a number of really good restaurants nearby.

The a la carte restaurant in the hotel served great food - we ate there a couple of times because the food was that good.

If you just fancy a snack (or a coffee and a pastry in the morning), visit the cafe/bar and order something from Ruby Anne - she's a real diamond.

We do recommend you check out the Spa facilities - the staff are superb and the prices are very reasonable - perfect to help you relax and enjoy your holiday.

We're not usually ones to hang out in the hotel bar, but the evening entertainment was that good, you felt compelled to listen.

We will definitely be coming back here!

absolutely reccomend this hotel if you are staying in mellieha, food was superb with a good choice and all staff were very pleasant, room was fantastic too.
with regard to smoking,we smoke but realise other people do not and fully understand not being able to smoke in public places,we did not smoke in our room and went onto our balcony even in cold wet weather so as not to have it linger in a room that was to be used by others.
not all smokers are anti-social cretins.

We booked a week at the Solana Hotel partly based on Tripadvisor reviews along with some knowledge of its location.

On arrival we were greeted by a lovely receptionist who checked us in and showed us where we could keep our luggage until our room was ready. Due to an early flight we had arrived a bit before check-in time, so this was nice to have the ability to leave our cases and explore.

We headed a few yards up the hill to the Hilltop Restaurant for lunch.

When we came back our room was ready and we retrieved our cases and settled in. All the rooms allow smoking, so being non-smokers we were aware of the smell of smoke in the room, but a quick word with reception and the following morning the room was thoroughly cleansed of all but the faintest traces of cigarette smells.

The housekeeping was good, room always cleaned and tidied and fresh towels provided daily, along with clean sheets.

We had booked half board. Other reviewers had mentioned the food was a bit repetitive, but although I wouldn't quite give it a four star rating, the food was of a good standard, reasonable varied and well presented. Considering how little we had paid to have half board over B&B I would say the food was very good value.

There are numerous restaurants nearby, catering for most budgets and tastes, although die hard fish and chip fans Might struggle.

The hotel has two pools, one indoor,in the basement, one on the roof. From the roof you get fantastic views past the church, down to the bay and onto the islands of comino and Gozo.

When we visited two years ago the bus service was provided by a multitude of old fashioned busses, all owned by the driver and despite their caring degrees of efficiency and repair they were plentiful and cheerful.

Now, however, the busses are run by Arriva. Anyone who has suffered Arriva in the UK will need no introduction to their service, busses or service reliability.

We visited in March and there was some much needed road improvements taking place, so all bar one of the regular services up through the village were diverted, but all stopped off on their way back to the ferry port.

There was also live music on Wednesday night with Ernest, who kept us so well entertained we braved the Friday night storm (their worst in living memory) to see him at the Pergola hotel which is a sister hotel to the Solana. Saturday night was also live music night.

For those who can't go without their Internet fix there is either paid access via a pc, or free wifi in the public area (reception, main bar).

Al in all, a lovely relaxing stay, despite the unexpected bad weather.

Just arrived back from a weeks half board at the Solana.Food was very good. The service on the reception desk was excellent.Rooms are spacious. We had a problem with the heating which the maintenance team were unable to resolve however we were left with a more than adequate portable heater. Would gladly return.

SolanaHotel, General Manager at Solana Hotel, responded to this review, March 8, 2012
Dear Guest,

Thank you for your time in providing us with your feedback following your recent stay at the Solana Hotel & Spa.

For the benefit of our Trip Advisor followers, where the smoking policy is concerned, in Malta it is prohibited to smoke in internal public places, hence, all the interior public areas within the Solana Hotel & Spa are non smoking areas. Within the actual guest rooms through prominently displayed signage, guests are encouraged not to smoke, notwithstanding, this does not mean that the hotel is a completely non smoking one. It is worth however noting that the hotel operates very rigorous housekeeping standards, hence, on the checking out of a room that was occupied by a guest that smoked within, we do our best endeavours to eliminate all smoking related odours from upholstery materials etc.

We are very pleased that in general you consider the hotel to be nice with a good value food offering. While thanking you once again, we very much trust that further to our clarifying our smoking policy, you will still consider staying at the Solana Hotel & Spa during future visits to Malta. If this will indeed be the case, please do not hesitate to contact us directly so that we will cater for your preference.

Best regards,

Elaine Cutajar Debono

Just back from a weeks stay at the Solana, what a fabulous hotel. Staff very friendly and accommodating. I would like to give a special mention to Amanda and Pierre who are both managers and commend them on how well they looked after us and also to Sandro who makes the best omlettes. Rooms very well appointed. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis , our studio appartment was well kitted out with a two ring cooker. microwave, kettle, pots, pans etc... In the restaurant there was a very wide selection of food on offer to suit all tastes and plenty of it. Great value for money. I would highly recommend this hotel. There is a very regular bus service just outside the hotel and you can buy a weekly ticket for unlimited travel for12 euros.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back quieter no road noise.

My wife, young son and I returned last week from a half term week break at the Solana hotel. It was booked on the strength of the reviews on Tripadvisor and we were not disappointed. Being advised that the rooms at the front could be noisy I had emailed ahead asking for a room at the back with a sea view and they had noted my request. Check in was quick and efficient and we were indeed given a room as requested. Our room was on the ground floor just around the corner from reception and I have to say it was massive with two single beds pushed together and a large double sofa bed for our son. The room and bathroom were spotlessly clean and towels were changed each day to maintain the high standard. A room at the back was definitely a good choice as the main road at the front of the hotel was very busy with buses and lorries to and from their way to the ferry terminal to Gozo. The view was not spectacular but given that the hotel is in a heavily built up area any view of the sea from the hotel is a bonus.
The room came equipped with a shower, bath, fridge, safe (€14 charge) and a flat screen TV which had several English speaking channels such as Sky News and Eurosports. The room was fitted with air conditioning/climate control and this worked fine although we didn’t have much need for it in February. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and I would definitely recommend this as the buffet breakfast was spectacular and contained everything you could need from traditional fries, omelettes, fruit, cake, bread, pancakes etc. It was very well organised and they never ran out of items and seating and queuing was not a problem.
The facilities of the hotel were also first class; the upstairs pool area on the roof had great views over the town and over the bay to Gozo although this area was not in use in February. The basement swimming pool and Jacuzzi were clean and pleasant and. I have to say it was the warmest I’ve ever been in. I didn’t use the gym or weights area but it looked perfectly adequate. The lobby and bar/café area of the hotel have a pleasant ambience where guests sat and chatted and browsed the free wifi each afternoon and evening. We ate once in the café on our first night and the food was perfectly fine. We didn’t eat in the restaurant or the downstairs buffet so we couldn’t comment on them; there were plenty of restaurants in the main street around the hotel indeed enough for us to dine somewhere different each night even in February.
Mellieha itself is a good enough base for exploring Malta, I would strongly recommend hiring a car as although there is plenty to do in Mellieha at night time there is not a lot happening during the day and the beach is a good 30mins walk away. Car parking was not a problem in February but may prove more difficult in summer. The main street only allows parking for 1hr at a time during the day but there was ample parking in the main square beside the police station and the narrow streets behind the hotel.
I do have few criticisms of the hotel but these did not spoil our stay in anyway and they are intended in a constructive manner. The key of our room constantly stopped working and we had to get a replacement from reception, I’d say this happened easily 10 times, this wasn’t a problem as our room was just around the corner but I wouldn’t have fancied getting lifts and walking to reception each time if our room was on the other side of the building. Also our balcony door wouldn’t lock and could be opened from the outside. This didn’t bother us as on one side we had a couple of pensioners and on the other a family we had become friendly with before they were moved to next door to us. However I do think this needs to be addressed as a balcony door that cannot be locked would certainly have made me feel uneasy in different circumstances.
All in all I would thoroughly recommend this hotel, for its pleasant staff, clean surrounding and friendly ambience. I would especially recommend it for families with children and older couples.

Room Tip: ask for a room at the back if you are a light sleeper,
