We went in January 2012 for one week. We found the hotel to be very clean and decor modern. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was very good and plenty to choose from. We would definately go back there again. An excellent base to tour from but still in a quiet location.

We booked this Hotel & Flight through 'On The Beach ' a 7 Day Full Board break over the New Year
There are good & things to be said...

First the good -

Hotel is very clean , modern..we found all the staff very friendly & helpful where possible..
Great rooftop terrace / pool , obviously for the summer months anyway..
Dining room nice enough , sit where you like , luckily we had breakfast in a corner with windows tables for two that had a view of sorts down to the sea...
Food on the whole quite good , tho standards did drop last couple of days when fewer people were there..

Now the bad -

Hotel is on a busy , noisy , steep main road
Our room for the first night was like a box , dark & dismal with a very small window that was in a ' Shaft ' , with an adjoining door to another persons room ..the wardrobe didn't have room to open fully , no balcony - WHICH WE HAD PAID FOR - and worst of all , ANTS in the bathroom ( not one or two - quite a few ) & some were even on the bed headboard !! was told there was no other room available ! someone did come up and spray & clean up with a towell but this was definately not a 4* bedroom - all in all it had the makings of a ' Holiday From hell ' scenario especialy when the baby next door started crying at 1.00 in the morning !!!.......... luckily ( ? ) someone left the next day and we were given another room..quite a nice room , unfortunately on the front which meant the main road , very noisy - need treble glazing - it had a balcony , this was within 3/4 feet from the top of the buses / vehicles on the road , not a place for relaxing or watching the world go by....we would have stuck it out but we had kept seeing an odd ant ( assumed they may have tried to make a break for freedom by stowing away in our belongings from the previous room !) but woke up on the third morning in this room ( 5'00 am due to the traffic ) went to the bathroom and my medicine box's had Ants in them ( aprox dozen or so ) , where do they come from in winter , 1st floor ???? , I'm at a loss !!!...as so P****** about this , so asked for another room , luckily a party of Germans had left & so were given a room , with balcony at the back of the hotel...UTTER BLISS.......quiet , nice room.....if we had this from the start the Hotel would have got top marks from us ( another couple who arrived a bit later than us - they were on B&B - were in reception when I complained about the first room , they were given this same type quiet room from the begining , obviously they were happy from day one )..
Anyway , the last 3 nights were fine , a pity the first 4 were so poor....

Full Board is a complete & utter waste of money , we only booked that as when booking the room the only one with a balcony was with full board or self catering...A strange system you are given a 7 euro allowance each to eat in the reception coffee bar ( not enough for a meal - main course & pudding ) ..we ate in twice only , on one of those days we just had a piece of cake each - aprox 3 euro's ( out of 14 euro's ) and had to pay for coffee !!! The last day whilst waiting for pick-up I managed a Burger & chips for the allowance partner just a had a stale cake - thought the waitress could have cut off the edge which must have been cut the day before !! - so out of a 98 Euro allowance we had aprox 12 Euro's...great value !!
avoid at all costs...
This wasn't a cheap Hotel and I expected to pay more due to the New year period , but we could have gone 5* all inclusive inc flight to the Canaries...silly fool me.....

We are not moaning Brits , we just think you should get what you pay for , we do stay in lower star accomodation - see my review of 'Saba'a Hotel ' in Petra a backpackers hostel..

However , we don't complain about the general Hotel noise created by Guests ,as per others who stayed over the same period as us . that is just due to inconsiderate people & the Hotel cannot be blamed for that...it is unfortunate that first impressions are the ones that last in the memory , so all in all , I would only reccomend this Hotel if you are guaranteed a good room , I think something on the top floor !!! so at least if you are on the front you are away from the traffic...

General Holiday Views

Malta was greener than expected , some nice places to visit , people are very friendly ( suprisingly most of the Bus drivers - very helpfull - as well ) , car drivers quite placid..
Buses fantastic value , buy a day ticket or even a weekly ticket from the bus driver , get on and off any bus as much as you like & its fairly easy to work out bus routes all over the island as it's smaller than you think...
Easy to do the Ferry D-I-Y to Gozo and we did a Gozo Sightseeing bus ( only because it was raining ) I think on reflection on a nice day ot would be a waste money for jumping on & off as some companies don't run that often ( unless you get the first early bus ) , local Gozo buses seem to be roughly every hour so a bus to the two or three sights worth seeing can be done at around 2.50 euro a day ticket....the local bus picks up right in front of the ferry terminal & takes you to the Victoria bus station is quite near the top of the hill..
I would reccomend the 'Malta Sightseeing ' hop on hop of south route but the Northern route is very easy by local bus..
Mellieha is a nice enough base , very helpfull lady in small Tourist Info near the church , very nice bay / beach at the bottom of the hill , with frequent buses to get you back up the hill...
Sliema seemed to have the typical holiday feel with a very nice promenade to stroll along in the evenings which is the one thing to let Mellieha down....

Room Tip: There seem to be a variety of rooms at this hotel , when walking round noticed some rooms had inter...

The service is top class, all the staff we met were so helpful and friendly. The food is excellent. Breakfast buffet has something for everyone and eat and as much as you wish. Well worth buying the 4+ evening meals offer as the food is varied, delicious and plentiful, the only danger is ladies, you may put on a couple of pounds! We booked a room at the rear of the hotel. The room was spacious to say the least- about 30' long, large comfy bed, no street noise can be heard at the back of the hotel, so we both had very good quality sleep every night. Very clean everywhere. I would certainly be happy to stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back as the front of the hotel is on a very busy road and therefore may intrud...

The Solana hotel in Mellieha, malta is a tasteful, friendly and very accomodating base from which to explore the local sights and entertainment. The decor is modern, stylish and finished to a very high standard - certainly better than the usual package holiday venue. Likewise the rooms are of high standard with first rate facilities and are exceptionally well maintained.

Our bathroom was finished in marble with soap dispensers, hair dryer, magnifying makeup mirror, retractable clothes line... even disposable shower caps! The room included a flat screen TV, adjustable climate control (free), a fridge, an oven and hob with extractor, a toaster, a microwave, a kettle... and tea, coffee, sugar, whitener etc were replenished every day - not just the first day as is common. The hotel also boasted an excellent outdoor pool up on the roof, and another indoor pool in an impressive spa complex which also incorporated a free gymnasium. We stayed here for a week in early Jan 2012 and were impressed with the service, friendly staff and quality of the rooms/facilities.

The hotel does suffer from a few disadvantages, which may or may not actually be disadvantages depending on your point of view. Firstly it is not located on the seafront - so no sea views, in fact the best views you can expect are of the little street out front, most rooms (like ours) had balconies which look inwards towards the balconies of other rooms. The second disadvantage is that the resort of Mellieha is very sedate and not very close to any of Malta's "party" centre's. If you intend to go clubbing or wish to let your hair down with the young set then it's a 20 minute bus ride to Sliema or St. Julians. I should say - there are a few good restaurants in Mellieha, and the quaint atmosphere and friendliness of locals will appeal to many - but the youthfull and energetic might find it a tad dull.

In summary then - Great hotel, great staff, great facilities, you will certainly not be dissapointed. If you are going to Malta for excitement then consider a venue closer to the nightspots or budget an hour each way to them between waiting for and travelling on the local buses. If you have rented a car (never drink and drive) or have enough money to splash on taxi's then this may not be such a problem. If you want to relax, get a taste for the "real" Malta and enjoy coming back to a good hotel when you have finished your wanderings at the end of each day then this is the place for you.

I hope this information was of help.
