“A lovely week in sunny Malta”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 3, 2010

‘We stayed for a week at this hotel in the Summer on a Timeshare offer which we paid £109 for a room for the week and were pleasantly surprised by what we found. The hotel was spacious and very clean, we were picked up at the airport and offered a welcome drink on arrival which was all very swift and friendly. The children enjoyed the hotel pool and activity reps to fill their days. Some of the restaurants were more suited to adults and more expensive, although it was my sons birthday one evening so we enjoyed a special meal looking over the beach. The pool food is cheap and tasty and there is also a small restaurant on the beach where we sometimes ate also. Our room was of a good standard and perfect for us. We would most definitely return.’

We spent 6 nights and 7 days at the Radisson Blu Golden Sands hotel in Malta. The hotel itself is great. It's clean and look-wise is very pleasing. The downfall of this hotel is that it is based in the middle of no where and is a good 15-20 minute drive to anywhere of interest (although the hotel staff will deny this and say that it is not...) on top of that, it is around 30-45 minute drive from the main cities that someone would probably want to visit if they went to Malta, mainly Mdina and Valletta. The facilities in the hotel are also somewhat lacking - there is no ATM, meaning that if you run out of money you have to take a bus ride to the closest town (this takes around 20-30 minutes due to the amount of bus stops). There are also no local shops, which means that you are forced to dine in the hotel (there are a few places on the 'private beach' (which is not private at all) however the food there is vile, greasy and is cooked mainly using frozen produce). The hotel take full advantage of this and charge stupid prices for anything, for example, a 1.5 litre bottle of pepsi in the shop is 2.80 (euro).

Like most people who have reviewed this hotel, we went there under the condition we attended a time share meeting. This took 6 hours of our time, despite being told it would be a meeting of around 2 hours. You are taken around the hotel alone and you are somewhat bullied into signing it. We didn't, the employee then got her manager who then actually shouted at us and stormed out of the room when we refused to sign it and we were then called for the next day to give our reasons why. After around 4 hours, we tried to leave as we had rented a car but were told that if we did, we would be charged 200 Euro each night. Because of this, we missed an entire day of car hire and wasted around 30 Euro. Saying that, not all staff were like this. Stefan was great and anything we asked was done fast and efficiciently - he made the holiday for us in all fairness.

Due its location, you are forced to go on excursion or you will die of boredem. Especially children, as people under the age of 16 are not allowed to go into the indoor pool after 11:59am and the outside pools are ice cold due to them having no heating.

Stayed here for a week on a £119 time share promotion. Had studio self catering apartment with superb sea view. First class accommodation, facilities and toiletries etc. Food in Agliolio restaurant was really good and with 20% discount card was very good value although service is a bit slow. Ate there every night except one when we went to Apples Eye which was also good value.
Hotel is quite isolated but with hotel transport or public bus at the door the rest of the island is easily reached. The time share presentation is quite long winded and drawn out but is not hard sell.
An excellent chill out place off season and accommodation, facilities and staff are first class.

This hotel is situated in a lovely bay and the hotel staff are obviously proud of the location, (while we were there they had a team event starting where staff met to clean the private beach at 6.00am one morning.......and all the staff I spoke to thought this was fun!!).
The reception staff were very welcoming, offering free drinks on arrival and we were always warmly greeted throughout our stay.

There is a variety of in-house restaurants to suit all taste, and we had a couple of enjoyable evenings at Agliolios. However, I have to admit that a 5 minute stroll at sunset and the relaxed atmosphere at Munchies Beach Bar was my preference.

We stayed in a 2 bedroomed suite that was spacious and well set out, equipped to the high standards one would expect, and views to die for, so I’m surprised at some recent comments. I can’t believe that its simply a case of just me being lucky, so I hope the management will be addressing any inconsistencies.
You do need a car to appreciate all that Malta has to offer, otherwise be prepared to brace yourself for the experience on the local bus service.
We did go as part of a timeshare taster package and whilst I can’t admit to enjoying the day of the timeshare presentation we knew what we were letting ourselves in for. You can’t expect accommodation and flights at these prices if you aren’t prepared to give up one day for the “time-share sport”!

The hotel is located on the best beach in Malta, staff is friendly and helpful, rooms clean and comfortable, love the big balcony. Free transportation if you book in advance to other towns, otherwise cheap buses. Weather is perfect in autumn and spring. Aliolio restaurant very nice - food, atmosphere, staff. Malteese wine is very pleasant.
Can find cheap promotional weeks on gumtree.

Like many others here we did a timeshare presentation deal.

The hotel is in a lovely location overlooking the sea with a nice beach. The public areas are all of a good standard.
Free WiFi was useful, the signal was weak but useable even on the 9th floor.

Sadly for us, the negatives outweigh the positives.

Service, with one or two exceptions, was poor, slow and unfriendly. We felt invisible at times.

The food quality is variable and mostly overpriced, as were the drinks. Agliolio was decent value, but food quality still varied. Two local restaurants are much better value for food and drinks. Apples is just across the car park, decent food selection, relatively cheap drinks but cafeteria style. The Munchies Beach Bar is exactly that in the day time but converts to a decent restaurant in the evening, we went twice and the food was excellent.

As far as the room goes, we had a studio on the 9th floor with a nice beach/sea view. The electrical card switch in the room was woeful, it was like doing the lottery trying to get the lights on(despite three card changes). There was a loose electrical socket and one of the light switches was faulty. We returned one afternoon to find the door left slightly ajar by the service staff, luckily nothing was missing. The TV was ancient so some widescreen channels are displayed with much of the transmitted picture missing. Channels included Sky News, BBC World, Sky Sports News, Sky 1. There were ants in the room, not troublesome but there nonetheless. I emailed customer services at the hotel about these points and at the time of posting this(over a week later) haven't heard anything back from them.

This isn't 5 star but for a week in a 4 star hotel, including flights we only paid £170 each so you really can't complain from that point of view!

Timeshare presentation - this was the first one we'd attended in over 10 years and absolutely nothing has changed! Having sat around for three hours doing very little, we finally got to the nitty gritty. Same old waffle, scribbles on bits of paper, no fact sheets, no opportunity to add things up, avoiding direct questions, and so on. Various implied guarantees but nothing to back it up - just check the forums "out there" before you go. We refused point blank, the manager then tried to sell to us by reducing the price again and again, I feigned annoyance and we left! If you enjoy winding people up you could have a great day here....

We pre-booked a hire car from Aquarius, through the Argus car hire website - price was good, much less than in the hotel lobby. Be absolutely sure you know what the fuel policy is, contact the hirer direct if you can as the agency sites aren't always accurate. This can lead to excessive fuel charges, a total rip off in some cases. Also the hirer adds two excess insurance fees without asking - for us these were in excess of 70 Euros - I took out a car hire excess cover before we travelled for £11, so asked that the charges were removed. I don't think they were too happy!

To tour the island you'll need a car or use public transport, taxis seem quite expensive(25-30 euro for airport run). The bus stop is only a couple of minutes from the hotel and the sightseeing buses all seem to call there.

Some nice restaurants in and around St. Paul's Bay which is the nearest resort area about 5 miles away - we liked Zeus Greek Restaurant on Xemxija Hill.

Countryside view so overlooking the scout's ablutions block
Carpet in room past it's best and marked, grubby curtains with hole.
Bed: no mattress protector and no pillow protectors, pillows inside cases
all covered in sweat stains (changed promptly) no cover on duvet -
all of which is very poor bed hygiene.
Standard of room 3 stars max.
Expensive food and drinks at the hotel and the 2-3 local bars also quite
pricey. Nice small beach. Buses great but EU health and safety have struck
so they are going. Was pestered to go on a time share presentation week and
gave in as we wanted to see Malta. I think they realised we were not buyers
as soon as they started the "sell" , and fortunately it was raining then.
Not worth it as there are lots of better cheaper holidays on offer to Malta if you
really want to go there.
