“Fantastic Rooms”
Reviewed August 6, 2007

This was a truly 5* hotel. The rooms were perfect. The only thing is you definitely need a car as the hotel is isolated. Food was very good but on the pricey side, breakfast being £13 each! The pool was great as was the small beach attached to the hotel. You can eat locally at the small beach shacks but do you really want to eat burgers all week!

This is a really lovely hotel offering a high standard of customer service and luxury accommodation. The resort of Golden Bay is scenic with a sandy beach (the hotel has a private section) and has an excellent bus service to a number of busier resorts. Golden Bay is very quiet (ideal for a relaxing holiday) with just a couple of bars, so for evening meals the hotel is the only place to eat. The standard of food is excellent (but pricey) and you need to reserve a table in the two hotel restaurants. The hotel is very clean with briliant facilities - just beware of the prices for drinks (especially if ordering a bottle of water by the pool!!!)
For a relaxing week this is ideal - didnt like Malta, but loved the hotel and location.
We booked through Dream Holidays which is part if Island Residence Club and did go along to the membership presentation. This is not really hard sell, but hard going as it lasted 5 hours. But once we made it clear we were not going to buy, the rep. left us alone. Make sure you are clear about transfer - we were lead to believe that return transport to/from the airport was included - but only the outward was provided.

My wife and I had a great week at the Radisson. We were very impressed by the quality and cleanliness of the rooms at the hotel. The staff are also friendly, polite and eager to help. The food is great. We were half board and felt that the buffet was so good that we didn't need to eat a la carte during our stay!

The is a 4/5 review, so there are a few areas for improvement. First off, we had to move rooms from our sea view to the back of the hotel after a couple of days because of the noise from the beach at night. The hotel had set up some large speakers and the music was pumping out until 2am. However, the staff got us sorted with a room swap despite the hotel being full!

Despite what your travel agent may have told you, this hotel does NOT have a private beach! The beach is owned by the hotel, but the Maltese government require the beach to be open to the public. This means that at weekends the beach is very busy. Consequently, the pool area is very busy and you have to get up early to get a sun bed (which was no problem for us).

The pool service is excellent. The attentive staff will bring you drinks and food (I recommend the lamb burger) so you can be really lazy all day! However, the hotel is very expensive, so you pay a price for the luxury.

The Scuba Diving Centre at the hotel is very good. They have som (almost) exclusive dive sites on the island (including Popeye's sunken barg). They have Nitrox (I used 36%) for those of you that are interested.

The hotel tours were reasonably priced compared to Thomas Cook's tours and looked identical on paper, so I would recommend a visit to the tour desk.

Some people were complaining about being harassed by hotel staff to purchase time shares, but we had no experience of this during our stay.

So, overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel and I would definitely return there if I ever choose to go to Malta again!

just returned from 7 nights timeshare jolly at golden sands,
the 2 hour timeshare meeting was a waste of time but no pressure applied to purchase just let them know from outset you are not interested .the hotel itself is brilliant and the most attentative staff from maids through to the big suits . meals and drinks a tad dear but not exhorbitant [ water round pool is ] .bar/cafe nearby alot cheaper . hotel a little isolated but free buses into major resorts on a regular basis and late evening or early morning pick ups if you are on the chemic . entertainment in hotel is excellent and would recomend a few nights on the moccha bar terrace .on the whole would praise this hotel highly.

We stayed at Radisson Golden Sands mid July, in fact we are still here (last day).
This a good mediteranian hotel, definitley not 5* in london or USA etc. There are too many details ignored to make it a true 5*. The maid service fell short, squashed mossys on the wall and curtains from previous occupants were not cleaned off, balcony not swept everyday, we had to ask for more tissues. This may seem a bit pedantic but if you bill this as a 5* these are the details that should be done as a matter of course.
The drink prices around the pool are ridiculous, £20 for 5 soft drinks and £5 for a bottle of water? That's on a par with the Dorchester, and this hotel is definitely not The Dorchester! The restaurants are not bad, but I would advise stay clear of Flavours resaurant, they do a buffet that is not worth the money you have to pay for it.
The 'comedy' sketch show done by the entertainment team was shocking. It was so bad it was actually funny!!

Thats all the negative comments now for the positive.

The hotel is in a stunning location, the view from our room over the bay is GORGEOUS !!. Rooms quite a good size decorated to a reasonable standard. Pool area is very good, beach clean. Staff friendly, free broadband access. My wife said that massages she had in the Spa were 1st class.
We came on a promo deal and got a 2room suite on the 7th floor, for all the negative comments, we actually ended buying a week here! ( no pressure) but we bought to exchange, it was not a bad deal, guarenteed 10% growth every year.

We probably wouldnt come back here in a rush but wouldn't dismiss it completely. They have a few problems to sort out and once they get these right it will be a top resort. Although its very remote out here and they have a captive audience, so they do try and squeeze as much money out of you as possible without doing the things that warrant the prices. They charge, nearly £4 per day to remove all the items out of the mini bar!!! (So that you can use it as a fridge)
Wouldn't say 'Dont come' just be prepared for the high drinks prices and the dodgy entertainment!!!!

We decided to go to Malta almost on a whim. I was interested in the island's history including the Napoleanic War era and WWII. We were able to obtain a suite through our time share membership for my wife and I and our two daughters.

The simultaneous good news and bad news was the resort's location. It is certainly remote which means peace and quiet, but also meant limited amenities nearby and extensive traveling to other parts of the island. The bay is beautiful. Compared with various places we have stayed in Hawaii, the immediate area seemed somewhat stark; however, the entire island appeared somewhat stark compared with the lush environs in the Pacific. It is obvious Malta is a very dry place. On several occasions in the evenings we hiked to the tower and even to the next bay to watch the sunsets.

The hotel itself was definitely well appointed. As we obtained the last suite available, we were on the bottom floor looking opposite the poolside. Consequently there was not much of a view, but we are not people who spend large amounts of time in the room. Therefore, we did not find this an issue.

Unlike another poster, we found our bathroom had a full tub and shower. Towels were changed regularly and we always had fresh soap, shampoo, etc. The room was always well cleaned when we returned in afternoons. My youngest daughter had no difficulty obtaining an extra blanket.

As we were not sure what to expect with regard to roads, driving conditions, etc, we did not rent a car. The hotel does provide regular shuttle service to Sliema and Valetta. You do have to book a day ahead, but this was not a problem. Unfortunately the last return trip from Valetta is at 5:30 which makes it difficult if you want to stay on the busier side later. I would suggest they consider running the shuttle until later in the evening.

The beach and the pools were excellent. We did spend a few hours in the pool and bathing, but as the main purpose of the trip was to see Malta, we did this mainly the day after arrival to overcome the jet lag.

The staff was very helpful, although sometimes it was apparent that they were not fully expert at their jobs. One waitress was also a student, so that it was evident this was not a "career" move for her.

My biggest problems was an attempt to get a dry martini with a twist at Flavours. The waiter did not seem to understand what I meant by a twist. As I was afraid I was going to get a Martini with orange juice in it, I cancelled the twist. I also told him I did not want ice. I ended up with a shot of vodka in a tumbler. I doubt James Bond would have gotten a Martini in Malta.

The food was good, but (for an American) seemed a bit expensive. We did find the menu at Agliolio varied enough. I would recommend eating outside at that facility as the inside was both noisy and sterile. We spent several evenings on the deck of Mokka enjoying the wine, beer, desserts, salads, etc.

The staff was not intimidating. The woman in the gift shop was extremely helpful in terms of recommending what to do and see.
There was welcoming wine and juice being served when we arrived in mid-afternoon. To expect some complimentary beverage at 11:00 P.M. is ludicrous.

Because of the remote location there was no place to obtain provisions other than the deli. Off site eating was limited to Apple's Eye.

Weighing the pluses vs. minuses, we would probably stay there again if we return to Malta preferring the seclusion to more overcrowded noisy areas. I suspect we would rent a car for several of the days to allow more indepence.

We stayed at the Bay Point, the other Radisson hotel in Malta, in 2006 and bought a week in a one bedroom apartment in the Golden Sands. This was our first stay and it exceeded our expectations.

The attached photos show some views from our balcony. The only downside was music from parties on the beach [both private hotel parties and on the public beach], but you could hardly hear the noise with the balcony windows shut. The temperature was nearly 40 degrees for most of our stay, so sightseeing was done in the morning and lounging around the pool in the afternoon. Food and drink was reasonably priced for a 5 star hotel. Agliolio was good for Italian food, but service was a bit hit and miss. Flavours had a good evening buffet, although the selection of dishes wasn't as good as the Bay Point. If you want to eat outside on any of the terraces, you need to book beforehand.

We hired a car from Avis at the airport for the week. The price for a week's hire was only 80 Lira including 2/3 tank of petrol. That gave us freedom to go to the local shops/restaurants for food/lunch and avoided taxi charges. The deli shop in the hotel was quite expensive and had little fresh food. The two cafes on the beach were very cheap and reasonable quality. Most of the visitors to the public beach were local and very well behaved - what a change to many places we have been. Everyone in Malta is very friendly and helpful.

Our 18 year old son joined us for part of the week. The hotel doesn't really cater for that age group - plenty of young children up to 13-14 years old and then a gap to the mid/late 20's. Apart from the beach cafes, there was nowhere for an 18 year old to go.

We were very sad to leave and Malta certainly grows on you. Next year, let's hope it is a little cooler!
