Jokes are awesome. Food is awesome. Jokes + Food= SUPER awesome. It doesn't make any sense, but food that comes from restaurants with odd names always tastes better. This was the case when yesterday we dined at Commando Restaurant in Mellieha. You might say what's in a name? If you're in the restaurant business, a lot. A name can pique interest, intrigue, and ultimately determine a restaurant's longevity. A name carries weight. So why did the owners name it Commado? Well, it seems it was the Royal Marine Commandos who were stationed at the nearby camp at Għadira Bay during the Second World War that christened the establishment with the name Commando, a name that has withstood the years.
It was by chance that we came across this restaurant and we loved it. We had a very good meal and we will certainly revisit. Service, surroundings, food and prices were all just right. The menu is very limited and straightforward. For lovers of meat the selection is bigger than that of fish. My wife had quite a hesitation in ordering her food. For starters the only fish available was the Scallop and Prawn Ravioli and although she is not keen on shell fish she had no other choice. I went for the Calamari Fritti whilst our friend Paul ordered the special of Risotto con Porcini and Parmegiano. We gave, the three starters served, a good thumbs up.
For our main course my wife ordered a Grilled Corb. This was served with roasted potatoes and boiled veg all placed neatly on the same plate. Same procedure followed with our main orders of Roasted Cutlet of Milk-Fed Veal and the Grilled Rib Eye of Irish Beef. We would have preferred having the accompaniment on the side. Putting this minor detail aside the food was exquisite. My wife loved the fish and our meat was cooked to perfection.
Only one dessert, a Lemon Posset, was ordered. We had 2 bottles of water, 2 pints of beer and 2 espressos. Bill came to approx €42 each, tips included. The management then offered us a free after dinner drink. We all loved the gesture.
If you have a hankering for good meat then Commando Restaurant deserves your booking.
