“Great stay in fabulous place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 8, 2009

Spent 3 nights in this excellent hotel with my wife and kids. Although I booked a cheaper city view room I was given a pool view room at no extra cost. The hotel is very clean, food is excellent and with a wide variety of choice. The evening buffet is also receommended as is the delicious buffet breakfast. Quite enjoyable and quiet spa with indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and gym all included.
Only negative : some plates tended to be not 100% clean so one had to be careful on choosing a plate in the restaurant. Otherwise excellent service and cleanliness.

A very smart, clean, comfortable hotel, fitted to a high standard throughout. 3 nice pools, lovely garden area, rooms comfortable and bathrooms beautiful. Everything ready for us on arrival, easy welcoming check-in, and the maid service seemed to specialize in finding the right moment to make up our room, as we were in and out at unpredictable times. Breakfast plentiful with a fantastic variety of dishes. We received 2 complimentary bottles of wine (always a nice gesture). Having read only one poor review before travelling I was quite hopeful, and I have to say the hotel knocked spots off the two 4 star hotels we've stayed in recently in England. I read one review from a woman who got lost regularly, travelling between the two buildings, I think she clearly didn't pay much attention. Yes, we got lost the first time but after that it was fine. We can't wait to go back again.

This was a very nice hotel. We booked a 'village view comfort room' as that was the cheapest they had left. There are more basic than that which are cheaper but they were fully booked.

The view was of the road! And the bed's weren't comfortable at all. But the bathroom was nice, it was decorated to perfection and there was plenty of room for our clothes etc.

It is a German hotel so unless you speak the language, the TV is no good to you. It's mostly full of old people, so if you're looking for a fun nightlife spot, this is not it. If you get a village view room, don't go to bed til after midnight as the karaoke and general road noise will drive you mad before that time.

Nice pool, nice hotel. Great price. Can't argue with that!

Nice Hotel, very comfortable. We travelled and stayed with family at this Hotel in three different rooms as there were 5 of us attending a wedding. The breakfasts were excellent, and the beds comfy and clean. The staff were not that friendly, and the "free" spa treatment was a ploy to con you into buying 35years of a time share apartment! AVOID at all costs. The spa is very good without wasting time with salesmen selling time RCI timeshares, check out on web first! The Spa people were not that friendly when they realised the Indian head massage was not being paid for by us but by RCI, but we did have lots of other treatments that were very good, also enjoyed the sauna, pools and steam room.
The TV was not worth having, and really needs updating if this is to be a succesful hotel.
I do not watch that much TV but I would at least like to have been able to if I wanted to!
The Breakfasts were very, very good. Bar 120 is good for sports, plenty of nice shops locally too. All in all a great hotel and area where we will stay again. The Taxi service to and from the Airport was too fast and very bumpy! We were recommended by our Son's wedding plannner to use (Dennis & David Gatt on:- [--]) who were excellent, nice vehicles, steady drivers, prompt, polite and reasonable. I hope you enjoy the Hotel and area as much as my family and I did!

My husband and I had read the trip advisor reviews with regard to this hotel and were generally encouraged by the positive reviews and thus were looking forward to our stay.

The disappointment started when we entered our section of the hotel. The hotel is split between 2 sites across the road from each other. We had to locate our room on the opposite side of the main hotel by accessing an under ground tunnel. As soon as we reached the tunnel there was an overwhelming smell of damp together with evidence of damp (water marks on the walls and wooden doors) There was the same hideous damp smell in our bedroom. We had been led to believe the hotel was full booked and had been unfortunate enough to be allocated the bedroom directly above the 120 bar (hotel bar) This bar played live music until the early hours. Then when the bar closed staff would drag all the table and chairs across the tiled floor to put them away for the night. Staff then proceeded to drag all the furniture back out onto the tiled seating area the following morning creating the same noise in the early morning. Consequently we got very little sleep. We did not complain as the hotel was full and there was no whereelse for us to go. For a 4 star hotel we fould this totall unacceptable to be allocated a room directly above the noisy bar.

Lighting in the bedroom was also extremely poor. The decor was dark and it was very difficult to see clearly in the mirror in the bathroom and bedroom at night time. There was no seal on the bottom of the shower door so consequently whenever we took a shower the bathroom floor was swimming in water. We reported this to the housemaid and this was resolved by the staff folding a bath towel up and placing it on the floor along side the bath to catch the water. Not acceptable in a 4 star hotel.

To compound things there was an elderly english gentleman working on the Reception Desk (mostly at night ) who was the most unhelpful rude reception staff member I have had the displeasure of coming across and my husband and I have stayed in many hotels. He gave you know eye contact and gave you the impression he wasnt really interested in what you were saying. He was unable to give us the most basic information regarding the resort or the public transport.

On a more positive note my husband and I have nothing but praise for the maltese staff that served us in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. They were fantastic, They were courteous and nothing was too much trouble. The quality of the food and service in the restaurant was excellent - by far the best buffet breakfasts we have ever had (hot and cold). The Al Ponte restaurant attached to the hotel is very good and reasonably priced. Also the Hilltop Restaurant at the top of the hill before it bends left away from the shops is excellent food. Reasonablly priced and excellent presentation. Also the chinese restaurant Les Saisons in excellent. We had a set meal for 2 which was good quality and good value.

With regard to Mellieha as a location - in the day there is plenty to do at the hotel and 2 pools and nearby beach (also Spa at Hotel and indoor pool). However at night it is extremely quiet - almost dead. Once you have had your evening meal there is not much to do. There are very few shops here and they do not stay open at night as they do in most meditternean countries so there is no oppotunity to amble around the shops and catch the atmosphere at night as there is no atmosphere. My husband and I are in our late 40's so do not hanker after noisy bars/ nightclubs etc but were bitterly diappointed that there is not much to do at night.

Lastly. DO NOT hire a car from Billys across the road from the Hotel. It took 3 trips on our last night to retrieve our cash deposit once we had returned the car. It totally spoilt our last night !!!! The staff there used the arguement that they would keep our deposit to check to see if we had incured any speeding or parking tickets te next day. We explained that we were leaving the following morning and that this was not explained to us. They had already taken our credit card number for that reason but seemed very reluctant to refund our cash deposit. It was only when we became very assertive that they were forthcoming. We got the distinct impression that they were trying to rip us off. They had said that if there were no tickets they would refund our credit card with the cash deposit once we had left the country.....................we didn't believe them either !!!!!!!!

The hotel itself was very nice, very clean and very quiet - but then it was the beginning of october so perhaps this helped! The pools were very nice too and with so few people using them it felt like our own private pool - totally amazing! And since the closest beach is nothing to write home about, the quiet pool was all the more appreciated. The hotel room we chose was the most basic and cheapest (a measly £31/night) - and yet, very good quality - the bed and bedding were the best we found in Malta, the shower room was totally fab. Ok, so there are no toiletries provided except some weird pink soap that would have been more at home in a hospital - so take your own for sure! Also make sure you close your window at night, it might be peaceful in the evenings but in the mornings there are many many trucks clambering up and down the steep hill outside the hotel as this is the main road to go to and from the ferry terminal for Gozo. We didn't eat any of the hotel food so can't comment on that but there are very nice and cheap places to eat in the town that are far better quality for money than the hotel. Beware though that the Maltese do fruits at extortionate prices and have a habit of adding about a kilo of butter/oil to any pastry so breakfast is unlikely to be healthy!!! Overall, I'd really recommend this hotel. All the more so if you use it as a base to explore the north of the island with a car, like we did.

Many many thanks to the friendly and helpfull staff here. We had a package from airmiles. Who booked us into a [--] of a hotel The Crown in ST Pauls Bay you have been warned do not go there. The Antonine staff got us a room to look at straight away at 10 am, we where able to look at the room before commiting to stay. It was an internal room twin bed onsuite very clean and tidy. The breakfast has a very wide variety of food available and is well staffed as well. 3 swiming pools one indoors. Rose on recption was very approachable and allowed us to stay later for a small charge as our flight was out at 8pm. We had a wonderfull time there felt very relaxed and staff worked around our times not pushing us out to get things done. We will return without no hesitation at all. We thoroughly recommend this hotel if you want to get back to a relaxed state, Oh and there is also a spa and treatment rooms in the hotel. Had the treatment excellent well worth it. Melliah is a quiet place but has lots of cabs or local buses (worth a ride or two)
