We booked an extremely last minute holiday to The Riviera Resort & Spa. On making the booking, I needed to email the hotel and ask some additional questions about the All Inclusive service. This was not our first time going AI, however it was in Europe. To be totally honest, the reason we needed a break was to get away from it all, have a week away where we did not need to worry about anything (including the cooking, cleaning etc,) and just enjoy some time together. I think the modern day phrase for our holiday was a Babymoon as in last holiday before the baby arrives, not any other meaning of this word!)
Ideally, I would have gone full board, however you could only go half or AI and tbh, there was not much in the price but as I would only be drinking water, had a couple of questions for the manager, who was extremely responsive!
The transfer time is not that long, perhaps 30-40 minutes and you get to see some of the Island. There are bus stops close to the hotel, the port to get to Gozo is walking distance, there is another hotel which have the beach that you can access the sea without climbing down a small ladder off the jetty and that is it.
We went on one trip and met several other people that were out and about each day. As I said, this holiday was about R and R for us, rather than seeing the sights. (I appreciate not to everyone’s taste.) The people we met who were out every day found it easy to get about, also the hotel did a packed lunch as long as you ordered it by a certain time the day before. However, if you wanted to be in the thick of it, then this hotel isn’t for you. However if you want peace and quiet seclusion and the odd day out and about here and there, then I would highly recommend it.
The staff work tirelessly to ensure you are ok. The food was plentiful and there was a good variety every day. We heard people whinge as there were two of everything, which in a busy dining hall, is a good thing surely?! There was not one day out of the seven we were there that we didn’t fancy anything there. Also, other comments were because people had to help themselves, this is a 4 star hotel in Malta, not a five star resort in the Maldives. Yes, you had to get your own tea/coffee/juices however this is perfectly acceptable. Together, one would get a table, the other would get the drinks, then we would be set up. Surprise surprise there was no whinging at lunch/dinner as it is serve your own beer and wine!! If you like your cocktails, then you may feel the menu is limited however just because the cocktail is not listed, I don’t think it means you can’t have it, you just have to ask for the ingredients of the cocktail rather than the name.
We had one minor accident and the staff were so quick to get everything resolved and ensure we were ok. There seemed to be nothing that was too much trouble.
We had no issues with sunbeds and went last day of June and back beginning of July. I love the sun and the heat however was surprised at the number of people cooking themselves in the middle of the day sun, literally roasting themselves until red raw. There are plenty of sunshades (umbrellas) and we moved so that we were in the sun from about 3.30pm/4pm onwards, which was enough.
Both pools are salt water pools which, as a keen swimmer, made no difference. (Except the cuts I had on my knee heeled 10 times faster which was a pleasant surprise. I fell up an escalator at the airport, I am a little clumsy like that!)
There seemed to be some confusion about the remote controls that we read on here before we went. As they go missing, you simply give a deposit to reception in exchange for a reception, which when you hand the remote back, you get your full deposit back. (I think it was €10/€20.) There is no cost for this. It was handy to have as we just had some background noise in the room. We did not take advantage of the safe as we felt the hotel felt secure enough for what we had with us.
We are not ones for animation on holiday, however the animation team seemed lovely and after the first couple of times of saying no, they appreciated that we were lost causes and just smiled and asked us whether we were enjoying our holiday, which I appreciated. (I do not like being pestered and these guys didn’t.)
Yes, there is always the odd rude/miserable guest however these people are everywhere and you just have to think that at least you are not as miserable as they are and smile at them. (Miserable people seem to hate being smiled at!)
I was pleasantly surprised at the wide variety of the ages of the guests, this was nice to see. Also, we met some people who have been coming for years, which I always think is a positive sign.
In summary, a wonderful holiday made extra special by the staff. This is a 4* hotel in Malta, one of very few that have access to the sea and some sunbeds on the sand. We had friends who went at the same time, stayed on the other side of the Island and had to drive to their beach. Food and drinks are plentiful. The weather is stunning. Rooms were large and clean. Yes, some of the décor is a slightly dated however this is not a modern hotel. We had a lovely time on our babymoon, so thank you to those who made it special.
