We stayed at the Riviera for a week early in November. The hotel is due to close to be refurbished this winter and it will surely benefit from the upgrade. The view from the Lobby bar is breathtaking and Karen is to be commended for her service. We arrived in the evening having missed dinner and were welcomed with water, sandwiches and some fruit. Our accommodation had pool and beautiful sea views and was in fact two good sized bedrooms (an upgrade arranged by our travel agent) - the beds were really comfy and the rooms were quiet - the only problem was that the air conditioning was not working and it was warm and very humid during our visit. (It's perhaps switched off during the winter). We never used the spa as we were out and about mostly and spent what free time we had by the pool where there were plenty of loungers in the sun and the shade too. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food in the buffet restaurant was plentiful and varied. The breakfast omelettes were fab and worth waiting for. Would definitely highly recommend the bistro which you have to book for, the food was excellent and it made a nice change to be waited on and escape from the sometimes canteen-like noise in the main restaurant. The other alternative restaurant attached to the hotel was closed during our stay.
We visited Gozo which is beautiful and very easy to get to as the large ferry is only 15 minutes walk away or 2 minutes by bus from the hotel. Don't miss the small boat trip from the inner sea through the caves to see the Azzure Window - make a list of what you want to see on Gozo and then take a taxi tour from outside the ferry terminal - we went on a larger guided tour by bus but think on reflection we would have preferred the slower paced more personal taxi tour.
The local bus stop is two minutes walk away which makes getting to other resorts and the capital Valetta really easy and cheap too!! Don't miss a trip to the Blue Lagoon on Comino via the small ferries right at the front of the hotel entrance - we would thoroughly recommend the 'Awsome Comino Ferries' company which is a fast boat and the crew take you on a short tour of the Comino caves on the trip back, and all for just €10' an absolute bargain. Take a walk beyond the lagoon, the views are fantastic on Comino.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I would like to thank you for your excellent review written above. We do our utmost on a daily basis to ensure that guests leave our resort with a sense of good value for money and having every intention of coming back. I am pleased that we achieved our goal.

As you have rightly said, the views from both the rooms and public areas are magnificent. One can see our sister islands, Gozo and Comino from most parts of the hotel.

I wish to thank you for mentioning our Sol e Mar Bistro. The newly introduced set menu has been welcomed very well by guests. This is a 4 course meal which is included in the AI package. Our A la Carte Menu is always very popular with all our guests.

Whilst I wish to thank you once again, I do hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you once again in the near future.

Kind regards

We stayed for one week at beginning of November,
Room was clean and warm, Food was ok most days, We had our 22mth old granddaughter with us, and staff in dining room always helpful with highchair seating etc,and always had a smile or a few words.
The hotel due for renovation, and does need updated.
I had a room on second floor overlooking pool and sea, and had daily cleaning/bed, towel change.
I would consider using this hotel again, it suited our needs, handy to a bus stop and beach.

Overall, I thought this was a great value for money for what we paid for the holiday. We didn't get to the hotel until 9:30 p.m. and had missed dinner, so were given a free bottle of mineral water each and a voucher to redeem for a small platter of sandwiches and a piece of fruit, which was much needed and very welcome! (My only previous all inclusive experience was in Ibiza, again a late arrival, but we got nothing from reception, barely a smile!).

The rooms were basic, but for us, a room is only a base anyway and we didn't spend too much time in it to have any complaints. The plugs are the same we use in the UK, which was an added bonus! I understand the hotel is due to be closed for 3 months shortly to have a refit, but to be fair, a lot of it is more than fine as it is (just dodgy carpets in the corridors etc!).

The indoor pool is lovely, heated salt water and a nice place to be when you have a day of bad weather and don't fancy braving the elements. They could maybe invest in a few more loungers as towards the end of our stay, the hotel was a lot busier and it was difficult to get one. The outdoor pool, in winter anyway, is only for the brave as it was really cold!! There are loads of loungers though, so it was great not having to get up at the crack of dawn to get a space.

The food was great for an all inclusive, none of the typical stodge you get when you go to a lot of places - lots of fresh fish, potatoes, salads, meats etc. The bistro is really nice, although you need to pre-book at reception - you can either have the 5 course set menu (with 3 choices for 3 of the courses) as part of your all inclusive stay, or the a la carte, where most of the meals were included as an all inclusive guest. The cost was pretty reasonable if you did want something a bit different, as was the cost of the wine if you didn't want just their local house wine.

The drinks menu was pretty good too, my previous all inclusive experience in Ibiza got us awful cocktails from a drinks machine in tiny plastic cups, whereas there was a decent cocktail choice in proper glasses here (unless you are drinking by the inside pool or are by the loungers outside).

The staff were really friendly, in particular Viktor and Karen in the bar, Shaun and Justin in the bistro and Michael in the restaurant/bistro. The reception staff were great too, my boyfriend accidentally locked the key inside the room and there was no drama in getting another one!

If you are looking for a hotel surrounded by the hustle and bustle, this probably isn't the place for you as there are only 3 hotels in the vicinity. Getting out and about is really easy though, as the bus stop is only a couple of minutes walk and the buses run fairly regularly to the main towns on the island, and the ferry terminal to Gozo is about a 15 to 20 minute walk away. The ferries run every 45 minutes, and 4 euros 65 return is a bargain, and I would definitely recommend a visit to this beautiful little island.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

Thank you very much for your very detailed and excellent review. We appreciate a lot your kind comments about our extra service for late arrivals. It is important to us, that the first impression is positive and we know that after a long journey guests do appreciate the drinks and snacks we provide at arrival. Thank you for mentioning our indoor and outdoor area. Plenty of new sun beds are available for all our guests. The Sol e Mar Bistro should be booked at the reception. 90% of the dishes are part of the All- inclusive package. We also offer our guests the new Table de hôte Menu, which is very popular with our all- inclusive guests. Mentioning staff in particular for their outstanding service is very motivating and helps us to continue to improve our excellent service. Your description of the location and its amazing surroundings was precise and accurate.
Thank you for your recommendation and we are looking forward to welcome you again in the near future.

We booked the Riviera Hotel and Spa this year for my wifes 50th birthday. After staying in the Seashells resort at Awrah the previous year, we thought that paying a little extra would be better, however it wasn't. We arrived late and were given a voucher to redeem at the bar in exchange for dry bread and a slice of swiss cheese and no butter. We were tired so we went to our room on the third floor and on opening the door there was a smell of drains, the wardrobe smelt damp, and although we had booked a double room, we had two single beds. I complained to the guy at reception and said we could zip the duvet together!!!!!!!!He said that they would sort it out in the morning, which I thought fair enough, it's late.
The following morning we were moved to the fourth floor and the room was a bit better, however the air con was working at times and not at other times. When we had rain, it poured through the lights and ran down the walls from the windows and the carpets were very grubby. On the third night we had a visitor in the bath, a cockroach, which I dispatched and flushed down the toilet, that's without mentioning the ants that lived under the skirting board. On the Tuesday morning we tried to book a table in the bistro and were told (by the man we complained about the room) to book it the day before we wanted a table which was a Saturday night (my wifes birthday), so we went down on the Friday morning and were told it was full!!!!! Mary did find us a table and were very gratefull for her troubles.
In all fareness to the staff, they were good and apart from the one person that we complained to. The food was good and couldn't find fault with it.
To sum up, we won't be going there again, even if it is spruced up, that was the gamble we took and it did spoil my wifes birthday. If we return to Malta again, we will probably go back to the Seashells resort.

Room Tip: Try and find out if the Hotel has been fully re-furbished.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I would like to start my reply by saying that we are sorry to hear that your recent stay with us, did not live up to your expectations.
As an extra service we prepare a snack for late arrivals, which normally is very much appreciated by our guests. We do apologize for any inconvenience you had with your room. Even though a pest control company is checking the rooms regularly, it is impossible to eradicate these unpleasant insects completely. Never the less we apologize for this incident.
I am very pleased to note, that one of our staff members made it possible to book a table at the Bistro for the lovely occasion of your wife s birthday. I will forward your kind comments to the person concerned. Our staff members always try to do their utmost even in difficult situations to find a solution in our guests’ interest.
