“Nice Hotel”
Reviewed November 19, 2013

We stayed for one week at beginning of November,
Room was clean and warm, Food was ok most days, We had our 22mth old granddaughter with us, and staff in dining room always helpful with highchair seating etc,and always had a smile or a few words.
The hotel due for renovation, and does need updated.
I had a room on second floor overlooking pool and sea, and had daily cleaning/bed, towel change.
I would consider using this hotel again, it suited our needs, handy to a bus stop and beach.

Overall, I thought this was a great value for money for what we paid for the holiday. We didn't get to the hotel until 9:30 p.m. and had missed dinner, so were given a free bottle of mineral water each and a voucher to redeem for a small platter of sandwiches and a piece of fruit, which was much needed and very welcome! (My only previous all inclusive experience was in Ibiza, again a late arrival, but we got nothing from reception, barely a smile!).

The rooms were basic, but for us, a room is only a base anyway and we didn't spend too much time in it to have any complaints. The plugs are the same we use in the UK, which was an added bonus! I understand the hotel is due to be closed for 3 months shortly to have a refit, but to be fair, a lot of it is more than fine as it is (just dodgy carpets in the corridors etc!).

The indoor pool is lovely, heated salt water and a nice place to be when you have a day of bad weather and don't fancy braving the elements. They could maybe invest in a few more loungers as towards the end of our stay, the hotel was a lot busier and it was difficult to get one. The outdoor pool, in winter anyway, is only for the brave as it was really cold!! There are loads of loungers though, so it was great not having to get up at the crack of dawn to get a space.

The food was great for an all inclusive, none of the typical stodge you get when you go to a lot of places - lots of fresh fish, potatoes, salads, meats etc. The bistro is really nice, although you need to pre-book at reception - you can either have the 5 course set menu (with 3 choices for 3 of the courses) as part of your all inclusive stay, or the a la carte, where most of the meals were included as an all inclusive guest. The cost was pretty reasonable if you did want something a bit different, as was the cost of the wine if you didn't want just their local house wine.

The drinks menu was pretty good too, my previous all inclusive experience in Ibiza got us awful cocktails from a drinks machine in tiny plastic cups, whereas there was a decent cocktail choice in proper glasses here (unless you are drinking by the inside pool or are by the loungers outside).

The staff were really friendly, in particular Viktor and Karen in the bar, Shaun and Justin in the bistro and Michael in the restaurant/bistro. The reception staff were great too, my boyfriend accidentally locked the key inside the room and there was no drama in getting another one!

If you are looking for a hotel surrounded by the hustle and bustle, this probably isn't the place for you as there are only 3 hotels in the vicinity. Getting out and about is really easy though, as the bus stop is only a couple of minutes walk and the buses run fairly regularly to the main towns on the island, and the ferry terminal to Gozo is about a 15 to 20 minute walk away. The ferries run every 45 minutes, and 4 euros 65 return is a bargain, and I would definitely recommend a visit to this beautiful little island.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

Thank you very much for your very detailed and excellent review. We appreciate a lot your kind comments about our extra service for late arrivals. It is important to us, that the first impression is positive and we know that after a long journey guests do appreciate the drinks and snacks we provide at arrival. Thank you for mentioning our indoor and outdoor area. Plenty of new sun beds are available for all our guests. The Sol e Mar Bistro should be booked at the reception. 90% of the dishes are part of the All- inclusive package. We also offer our guests the new Table de hôte Menu, which is very popular with our all- inclusive guests. Mentioning staff in particular for their outstanding service is very motivating and helps us to continue to improve our excellent service. Your description of the location and its amazing surroundings was precise and accurate.
Thank you for your recommendation and we are looking forward to welcome you again in the near future.

Regards

We booked the Riviera Hotel and Spa this year for my wifes 50th birthday. After staying in the Seashells resort at Awrah the previous year, we thought that paying a little extra would be better, however it wasn't. We arrived late and were given a voucher to redeem at the bar in exchange for dry bread and a slice of swiss cheese and no butter. We were tired so we went to our room on the third floor and on opening the door there was a smell of drains, the wardrobe smelt damp, and although we had booked a double room, we had two single beds. I complained to the guy at reception and said we could zip the duvet together!!!!!!!!He said that they would sort it out in the morning, which I thought fair enough, it's late.
The following morning we were moved to the fourth floor and the room was a bit better, however the air con was working at times and not at other times. When we had rain, it poured through the lights and ran down the walls from the windows and the carpets were very grubby. On the third night we had a visitor in the bath, a cockroach, which I dispatched and flushed down the toilet, that's without mentioning the ants that lived under the skirting board. On the Tuesday morning we tried to book a table in the bistro and were told (by the man we complained about the room) to book it the day before we wanted a table which was a Saturday night (my wifes birthday), so we went down on the Friday morning and were told it was full!!!!! Mary did find us a table and were very gratefull for her troubles.
In all fareness to the staff, they were good and apart from the one person that we complained to. The food was good and couldn't find fault with it.
To sum up, we won't be going there again, even if it is spruced up, that was the gamble we took and it did spoil my wifes birthday. If we return to Malta again, we will probably go back to the Seashells resort.

Room Tip: Try and find out if the Hotel has been fully re-furbished.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I would like to start my reply by saying that we are sorry to hear that your recent stay with us, did not live up to your expectations.
As an extra service we prepare a snack for late arrivals, which normally is very much appreciated by our guests. We do apologize for any inconvenience you had with your room. Even though a pest control company is checking the rooms regularly, it is impossible to eradicate these unpleasant insects completely. Never the less we apologize for this incident.
I am very pleased to note, that one of our staff members made it possible to book a table at the Bistro for the lovely occasion of your wife s birthday. I will forward your kind comments to the person concerned. Our staff members always try to do their utmost even in difficult situations to find a solution in our guests’ interest.

We had a great stay here during half term. Food was lovely-particularly the anti pasta starters and there was a wide variety throughout the week.
The pool area was a nice relaxing place to sit and there was always plenty of sun loungers available.
The best thing about this hotel is the staff. They are all very friendly and eager to help. Peter on the front desk should have a special mention for sorting out my sister-in-law's phone and going the extra mile when he could have just shrugged his shoulders and walked away. Other special mentions go to the staff in the lobby bar and the pizza place.
The hotel is ideally placed to visit The Blue Lagoon (boats directly opp the hotel entrance) and it is a must. Try to go early if you can as it can get quite busy.
I throughly enjoyed my stay. Thank you Riviera for a lovely holiday.

First of all... Ignore all bad reviews. People clearly had expectations far too high

The hotel is very nice looking. They have a private beach (there is no sand entrance, but a jetty entrance to the sea with steps) but there are sunbeds and a bar. Again, don't let this put you off, it is lovely. There are 3 restaurants, 1 buffet and 2 sit in. 2 out of 3 have outside dining available. There are 5 bars (inc hola beach) and there are a range for both paying and all inclusive customers. It is very clean and the staff and friendly and more than happy to help you out.

I believe the hotel is going to be shutting down soon for a bit of a revamp, but I didn't see a lot that needed to be done. The bathrooms looked a bit tired, but still everything worked and we had a bath/shower so no complaints there. The Spa downstairs was nice, however the jacuzzi wasn't really warm and didn't bubble much, and the hydro pool wasn't working during our stay. However we did pay a bit extra to have some massages and it was well worth it!!

The food that was served at the buffet was really nice! The have a live cooking area, where they will cook fresh just for you for whatever is there for that sitting. Only bad things i could say about the buffet area; The orange drinks in the morning seem to be watered down, the tea made from the machine is awful (please get some teabags) and i think there should be a couple more coffee machines as there was always queues for these

Lots of cats around the area :) I didn't mind too much as I like cats however the staff don't try and move them away and they are at your feel constantly while you eat, so if you are allergic, maybe take some antihistamines

Well worth a trip, and again the staff are lovely. Big shout out to Peter at the front desk and Karen at the lounge bar. They were fantastic!

Room Tip: Get a sea view if you can :)

Dear Laura
I would like to start off by thanking you for your nice comments above.
Your review has been very informative and potential guests reading your review can get a very clear picture of what services we offer.
As I have mentioned in previous reviews we have been working very hard in order to improve the selection of food offered in our main restaurant. Live cooking for breakfast, lunch and dinner along with Pizza on the buffet counter, improving the quality of our breakfast by introducing a healthy corner to the counter amongst others are leaving the desired effect on guests.
We constantly thrive to ensure that we continue improving our services and products to ensure that guest satisfaction is always reached.
Whilst I wish to thank you once again, we look forward to having you over once again in the near future.

Arrived at half term. The hotel is perhaps struggling to make the full four stars but a combination of things made an old cynic like me give it a 5 star rating. Every member of staff there went out of their way to make you feel welcome and provide the personal touch. Our holiday started with one of the party leaving a phone on the delivery taxi. Peter on the desk chased the emergency numbers with enthusiasm for us and got the phone back.

The rooms were of a good standard but are being further upgraded this winter. The food was varied and of good quality, the bread excellent. As usual the all inclusive drinks were a bit hit and mix but plenty to go at. The location on the side of the bay is brilliant. It is a somewhat remote from Valetta but when you have seen the built up area of the island you will be pleased to be here! The boats to the Blue Lagoon at 6 euros were outside and the cheapest we was. Visit the neighbouring bays. If you want a laugh, try Popeye village, it is so bad it's great!

The hotel isn't too big that you don't see familiar faces amongst the staff.

Highly recommended

Room Tip: We were on the second floor, which was quiet. Higher numbers are better. Plenty of lift access altho...
