“Great Holiday Once Again”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

We decided to spend 4-weeks once again this year. When we arrived we found two friends we had made last ear in the bar waiting for us. What a great delight after a long journey. When we went for dinner that evening 6 more friends and it just felt like coming home to a family. The staff were the same friends we had met previously and remembered us by first name. This must truly be the sign of a great holiday hotel - a very small turnover of staff, from chambermaids to managers and all in between. The weather, once again, was great, not too hot but certainly not cold.

The only blip would be the entertainment during the day - Jonny G spent more time on his phone than trying to organise the day timer activities, which were well attended b guests; and on more than one occasion was very rude. When he went on holiday his replacement, Jim, was a delight and everyone copmmented on the difference. Managers of Mellieha please take note!!!!

Room Tip: If booking with Thomsons do not pay for a sea view - ALL ROOMS HAVE A SEA VIEW.

Having come in the winter i was surprised a lot of the clientele of the hotel were older which meant the entertainment was catered for that generation, eg bingo, bowls and whist. There was however live entertainment every night and also a quieter lounge where you can sit and talk. The food was wonderful with a good selection, even 2-3 vegetarian main course options.
The location itself is great if you are a beach goer but its 30minutes from Melliha and 45 minute bus ride from Valletta or Mdina.
Every room has a sea view and a balcony. The rooms are kept spotless but the beds are hard as a rock.

Stayed here for a wedding that was being held in st pauls bay, the location is quite out of the way from most things but has a nice private beach as well as a busier beach and local town just 5 mins walk away. The hotel its self is in the need of a slight revamp, has quite an old feel to it.The food I was not impressed by at all, very bland and wasnt the best tasting! There was a bbq night that weas very nice however. I participated in the watersports on the private beach which was very well priced. I'd probably not return just due to the food quality and location, other than that the hotel was fine.

have just returned from a week at the mellieha bay hotel. it was a (good price) package through thomsons. the hotel itself was spotless and the rooms kept tidy, cleaned every day and towels changed often.
a big plus were the comfy beds, all too often beds are too hard and uncomfortable.
at this time of year it's obviously a place for a more mature type of guest and many of the people staying had been there several weeks. entertainment is provided in the evenings with this age group in mind.
when we booked it was on a half board basis which we usually don't bother with as we like to eat in local restaurants. however, the half board was a god send as the hotel is a little removed from the town and being out of season the little local places were closed (although classified as an all year round resort). mellieha town had more to offer but that was a longish uphill walk or bus ride away.
food at the hotel is served buffet style and there was plenty of everything. if things ran out more was produced, the quality of the food was good too. lots of choice for me as a vegetarian and lots of meat or fish for the carnivores.
staff on the whole were friendly and helpful, except I have to say not the bar staff. one or two of them appeared disinterested and almost disdainful. on one occasion they were more occupied in seemingly moaning about another guest rather than serving me, and then only half heartedly. not all the bar staff were like this but it only takes one or two experiences to make a poor impression.
we booked this trip quite late and got, what we felt was, a very good deal. if we'd had to pay the full price we might not have chosen to go there as we didn't necessarily plan on going to malta.
having said that the hotel did what it says on the tin. all rooms have a sea view, well placed to catch the ferry to gozo. the hotel is very clean. plenty of food if eating in. and on the whole helpful staff.

Room Tip: as stated all rooms have a good sea view. if you're a little less mobile need to bear in mind th...

Just spent a week at mellieha bay hotel and to be perfectly honest I was pleasantly surprised. It was clean comfortable and the room was better than expected. It is well located for buses for all over the island. The walks from the hotel are good and the peace was remarkable. The food was pretty well English and very tasty with a good selection at both breakfast and evening meal. for the price of this break it hits the mark. Definitely one for a relaxing winter break.

We live locally but use this hotel for the occassional weekend break.

Our room was one of the refurnished units which was pleasant. The bathroom though showed show signs of mould, split furnishings over the mirror and towels were definitely past their best. Cleaning standards were good anthough the plug was filthy when lifted in the wash hand basin.

The greatest area of disappointment was the food. Ingredients felt low quality and were barely warm. Occupancy at the hotel was very low so food turonver was also low meaning items sat there for the whole duration of the dining period. There were no fresh vegetables with main courses other then potatoes and most meat dishes were bland. The machine coffee and fruit 'juices' at breakfast are almost undrinkable. Quality was what one would expect at a mediocre 3 star establishment.

Drink prices throughout are hotel are expensive - €2.00 for a machine cup of coffee of poor quality. We stayed half board and bar staff tried on more than one occassion to give us unbranded drinks for the price of branded drinks we requested. We had to watch them!

Also, we were most surprised that f you want a swim, a pool towel will cost you €2.20 per person. Hardly 4 star service.

The hotel's views compensate for a great deal but based on this stay guest retention does not seem high on the agenda. Staff rarely speak unless spoken to and smiles are virtually non-existent.

A plea to the General Manager - take a hard look at what you're offering, including the standards of customer care. When we checked out, not a word of did you enjoy yourselves or hope to see you again, in fact not even a goodbye.

We arrived home this week after two weeks half board with Thomson Holidays, we had paid extra for a superior room which was superb, one reason for booking here and not the hotel we stayed last year was the balcony overlooking the sea and I was looking forward to a cold beer on the balcony. This was not the case as the supposedly minibar was not cold enough and was wet through on the bottom, I went to reception to be told that it was not a refrigerator or minibar but a cooler. I pointed out that whatever it was it was not working correctly, nothing at all was done. I spoke to the Thomson advisor (David) who did his very best to resolve the problem, as the brochure copy he had also stated fridge/minibar but I got the impression he met the same brick wall, he was told that there were no fridge/minibars in the hotel so I said he would have to contact his superior as this was misrepresentation, after I had been back in the room a while he phoned up to say they could provide a fridge for 5 euros a day which we declined. After reading various revues about the hotel this was a big disappointment. The other points are steps, yes steps. To get to the lift you have to go down 5 steps, what brilliant planning, food was poor quality in fact we can believe some people wanting to eat out, the meat was fine but the lack of vegetables and under cooked sometimes overcooked potatoes very disappointing for a 4 star hotel, last year we stayed in a 3 star in Malta and the food was much better in fact the lady advisor from Thomson seemed surprised when we pointed this out to her. The drinks were expensive a pint was 1.5 euros more than last years hotel. All in all we will not be going back here but we will return to last years place.
