“excellent holiday”
Reviewed March 12, 2010

my wife and i have visited the island of malta for the past sixteen years, firstly with our twin boys, who are now 27 years of age, and latterly on our own. we first stayed at the luna in 1993, and have returned there ever since. we found the welcome off all the staff brilliant, facillities excellent, including the food. in a nutshell, all you would wish of an excellent holiday. in the near future, we hope to bring our two grandchildren with us, as malta is a safe environment, for the kids.

My husband and i visited the Luna wuth our 2 boys (7 and 4 yrs). What we love about the Luna - very friendly and helpful staff, great with the kids, very clean, nice and relaxed atmosphere, good food, great 1 bedroom seaview appartment. Got the impression that the staff really cared that you had a good holiday. We're booking again for 2010!

My Wife and I have returned to Malta for many holidays staying at various hotels. We have tried self catering through to all inclusive. We have returned to the Luna Holiday Complex 3 times, B&B twice, self catering once and enjoyed it very much each visit. The first visit was in September when the Maltese have a firework display every night for a week, we also had a room overlooking the main road, [not recommended] On our second visit, we requested a room overlooking the pool, which we didn't get. The staff were very helpful and sorted the problem out the next day. The Luna is by no means the best hotel on Malta, but it is only a five minute walk the the lovely Mellieha beach, great for small children. The food in the hotel is nothing special, but it isn't bad either. There are various eating places nearby to suit everyone. The hotel entertainment was very good and the staff really nice. Not a lot going on at night in the village, but plenty of night life 15 minute taxi ride away. We will be returning to the Luna again, it may not be as cheap as it use to be, but it certainly is cheerful enough for us. Would recommend this hotel for couples with young children looking for a beach holiday [without yobs]

We have been going to the Luna now for 10years. Have enjoyed every moment of it.The staff go out of their way to help and are very friendly. The food is very good and the service is excellent. The Little supermarket is stocked very well and anything that they haven't got, they will try and get it for you.Overall it is a great place to stay and the bus service to all the island is cheap and good value.Going backa again next year.

The hotel facilities were nice, such as pool area and reception. The rooftop pool was very nice, with good views. The staff were generally friendly and the location was great, if not a little quiet at night. However, the condition of the two bedroom apartments, which are a separate block at the back of the hotel, was terrible - dirty, rusty and not at all suitable to cook family meals. We even had a gas leak.

On arrival we were pleased to note that, unlike other guests, our apartment was available. However, I then discovered that I had to haul our luggage (3 large suitcases and a pushchair) down some stairs out of the hotel complex, along a road and then up a further two flights of stairs to the room. As my wife has back problems and needed to look after our children, this left me to move our luggage on my own.

My sister, who shared a joint booking, had to move their luggage up three flights of stairs, although after complaining they had some help from the hotel maintenance staff.
Throughout the holiday, we had to climb up and down stairs with our pushchair and bags / equipment for the day. The stone / marble stairs present a hazard for young children should they fall and we had to closely watch them / hold their hands every time.

When we first entered the apartment, my wife immediately burst into tears at the sight of what was very shabby living accommodation. Specifically, the kitchen area was rusty and dirty. We had to re-clean the kitchen area and all of the crockery before we felt comfortable in even having a glass of water.

The kitchen area and the cooking devices fell significantly short of our expectations from the Direct Holidays web-site, especially for a 3 star apart hotel. Key areas of concern, included:
1)A rusty and badly corroded gas hob. Aside from the poor condition of the hob, the cupboard underneath smelt of gas. After complaining to our rep, this was supposed to have been fixed, although a background smell still appeared to be in place. For the safety of our family, I isolated the gas supply on the gas canister on our balcony every time we were not using the hob. The risks were potentially exacerbated by the fact that the ignite button did not work on the hob and instead Luna provided a box of matches.
2)The kitchen did not contain a traditional oven or grill. Instead, we had to use a dirty, freestanding microwave / grill combi. This did not work particularly well and was not suitable for cooking family meals due to its size i.e you could not cook more than one item at a time. Again, we had to clean this item thoroughly before we felt comfortable in using it.
3)The room did not have an electric toaster or kettle. We had to boil water in an old fashioned kettle on the rusty, dirty and smelly hob (refer above.)
The sink area did not have a draining area. It was clear that the work surfaces had been used to place washing up items, as the work surface contained water stains and had cracked next to the sink. In fact water seeped through the crack in the work surface. We had to place our washing up on a tea-towel to soak up any water draining from washed items.
4)The freezer compartment in the fridge did not work properly and some dairy free ice creams that we had bought were spoiled.

Similarly to the kitchen, the bathroom area was very shabby and dirty. The shower floor was mouldy and the toilet flush broke during our holiday. We had to use buckets of water to flush the toilet, although this was fixed by maintenance after we complained.
The room did not have air conditioning and we were therefore supplied with two freestanding fans (one floor standing and another smaller side mounted). Given the time of year and heat in the rooms, I asked reception for additional fans, which they were happy only to hire to me at an additional cost (on top of an additional fee also for the use of the room safe.)

Our apartment did have a sea view, but this was unfortunately ruined by the building site in front of the sea. Further, the evening entertainment comprised of Line Dancing, songs from the 60’s and sometimes Karaoke. This was in my opinion not “ideal for families,” especially with young children. This, combined with the condition of the rooms and lack of a TV, meant that we had to leave the hotel each evening looking for family entertainment.

Overall, the condition of the aparthotel common areas, including the reception and pool areas were to a generally good standard. Also the staff were in the main friendly. However, it is clear to me that the 2 bedroom apartments are not an integral part of the complex. Aside from having to leave to hotel to get to the apartments, the condition of the rooms fell significantly short of the rest of the aparthotel. The ground floor apartments appeared to be let to local Maltese residents and holiday makers.

Having complained to Thomas Cook / Direct holidays they advised that the apartments are descibed as a "simple base" and should not be expected to be more than "basic." I had assumed, clearly incorrectly, that 3 star would have offered something better than what we were offered. Even "basic" does not adequately describe the conditions of the rooms, although they were spacious.

Aside from the condition of the room, Malta was an enjoyable destination. Mellieha Bay had a great beach and snorkelling was fun. The buses / local transport is very manic and unreliable. If you are feeling brave on the roads, you may need to hire a car to get around.

Had a week self catering at the Luna Holiday Complex. Wasn't sure what to expect after reading the mixed reviews on Tripadvisor, but we had a superior studio (I think these are the newer rooms?) and it was clean, fairly modern and although the kitchenette was very basic that's what I expect on holiday, and we managed to cook a couple of meals in there. Unfortunately our room overlooked the road which was a bit busy and noisy at times, although the view up the hill to the church was lovely. The bathroom was adequate, would have preferred a shower cubicle to a bath but we managed okay. Reception staff were polite and helpful and friendly, and we even ate in the hotel restaurant twice (normally avoid these places as they're usually pretty average) as the food was very nice and there was a good range of local dishes on the menu. The roof top pool was great, amazing views of the bay. Location was fine, nice to be near the beach (although they could definitely make more of the bay area) and we didn't mind the walk up the (steep) hill to the village as it gave us some exercise! Village itself was average, we would have struggled to find more nice restaurants if we'd stayed longer than a week though. All in all, for the price and for what we wanted (a relaxing last minute break in the sun) it was great.

We went for our honeymoon, and I wish I had taken more notice of the poor reviews. The first room we were given had no air con and was the size of a shoe box, to change rooms we had to pay 25 euros extra per night, or 100 euros for the eight nights with no balcony, but it did have air con, we had no choice but to take it, however the air con was poor and one night it blew out warmer air than outside.. A bit of a con really as it seems, they offer the worst rooms and then charge for an upgrade. The hotel had two parts, the old part was awful, the new part was more modern, but the hotel was generally dirty. The rooms was cleaned only once, and no extra cleaning is available.
The hotel bar food was fine, the bar staff were very helpful and friendly, except for one, who refused to serve a drink to take to our room as he wanted to close, at 11.25pm although we were told the bar is open until 1am.
The pool table was broken, the roof top pool was very nice, 1.12 metre deep, so not good for kids and a little shallow for swimmers, lovely sea views though, the downstairs pool has a jacuzzi, but it was a little too dirty for us. Most evenings had entertainment, but the average age was pensioners, so the entertainment was more suited to older people.
The hotel is situated very close to the beach, which was actually very nice, however, for everything including a cash point, you have to go into the village, a minimum 15 min walk up an incredibly steep hill. Buses run until about 8pm, for 54 cents, the number 45, otherwise its a fixed 1.16 each regardless of how far you are going.
A quiet village, very little to do, the place to go is Crosskeys, the a la carte was wonderful, pizzeria service not so good, apparently the bar is good at the weekend, but we didnt go there, choosing karaoke up the road instead.
Beware of taxi fares, every taxi charges a different rate, even if it is the same driver!! Six euros up to Mellieha Village, pot luck coming back, anything from eight euros upwards. It has put me off going back to Malta, the hotel was undoubtably the worse we have ever stayed in.
