“Large boat, superb experience”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

Really glad we chose Mar de ons, instead of some other whale/dolphin excursions. It was a really hot day, and to see the overcrowded little boat next to ours made us sigh with relief. The boat has plenty of room on the various decks, and also an air-conditioned indoor bar area.

We chose the 2 hour excursion, and we were guaranteed 100% to see pilot whales with a 75% chance of dolphins. We achieved 100% on both counts.

We spent a hour or so with the Pilot whales, with the boat tracking the whales so that we could watch them. We must have seen over a dozen or so whales. It was truly excellent to get on front of the whales and watch them rise out of the water directly in front of us, before dipping under the boat. We also headed back and along the way stopped off at an area to see dolphins. Perhaps we were fortunate but again we saw plenty of dolphins, including some young ones with adults. We actually saw a dolphin lift vertically out of the water, twisting and flipping before landing back in the water.

Overall and excellent trip and I thoroughly recommend 'Mar de ons' over the other tours.

“Whales and Dolphins”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

We went on a 2 hour trip from Los Cristianos and within 20 minutes of setting off were sailing among a large pod of pilot whales (about a dozen of them). We spent around an hour with them before heading back via a small pod of bottle nose dolphins. We were on a large boat with plenty of space to move around from side to side as the whales swam around. The boat has an air conditioned bar for when the temperature is too hot. They also offer a free trip if there are no sightings - which apparently is unlikely given the number of pods living off Tenerife.

“Good Excursion”
Reviewed April 18, 2013

We went on a 2 hour trip, which was just about right for our 3 year old daughter. You get a nice view of the Playa de las Americas coast and Gomera and a chance to see some pilot whales. The staff is pleasant and knowledgeable.

“Fantastic Experience”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

We did this trip in late September on the Jolly Roger. Staff very skilled - we sailed for less than 30 minutes before we picked up a group of pilot whales and then spent the next hour following them around and getting into some great positions to see (and hear) the whales up close and got some great photos/video. The vessel is modern but built to look like an old sailing ship - it has toilets and drinks can be purchased on board. There are upper and lower decks so that you can position yourself close to the water or higher up for the best views. The lower deck has a shaded area under cover.

The return route to port provides some great views of the coastline and we also saw a few dolphins swimming near the fishfarm.

All in all this was one of the highlights of our visit to Tenerife - not sure how often they sail at different times of the year but we spoke to Scott and Maria who gave us all the information we needed.

PS - if you are waiting for a sailing you will get a great cup of coffee just around the corner in the little square on the left at a lovely place called Folele.

“Well worth it”
Reviewed November 4, 2011

The trip is a two hour boat ride around the bay. We saw Pilot Whales including a calf (small for whales) and Atlantic Spotted Dolphins ( a small dolphin). As the Boat does a loop we saw the Whales twice. Apparently they are nearly always there. Dolphins aren't as regular but you stand a decent chance of seeing them.

The Canary Islands are one of the best places in the world to see Whales. Speak to the English Female member of the crew, she is a wealth of knowledge and has many photos. They have seen most whale species at some point, Killer Whales, even Blue Whales.

One word of caution. It was extremely hot above deck so care with the kids. There is plenty of cover downstairs. The glass bottom of the boat also gave great views of the animals, all of which came very close.
