“Good hotel, near to beach and sand dunes”
Reviewed October 1, 2010

We stayed in a room with on the third floor and after reading previous comments I thought it would be old fashioned but we didn't think it was at all. Yes the exterior of the hotel is old, but inside its polished mable and tiles as you'd espect of a good hotel.

The hotel is right next to the beach at the lighthouse end of the Sand Dunes (5 minutes walk to either). The pool is an unusual shape but it's good for swimming as it's so deep everywhere you have to keep moving. There is a shallow side for children through.

The food at breakfast and dinner in the standard restaurant is good compared with other similar buffet style spanish hotels, however I would recommend the 'Kyrstal' restaurant as this is a no extra cost option for guests on half or full board and the food there was amazing - high class restaurant a la carte standard.

In summary a good relazing holiday - we saw some places I wouldn't have wanted to stay further in land on a coach back to the airport - so I suggest checking how far your hotel is in metres from where you want to go beach, shops, etc... There was a lot of hotels and appartments in this part of Gran Canaria in the middle of nowhere.

I'd also suggest not bothing with transfer coaches if you stay at this hotel or nearby. Ours took 1hr 25minutes to travel 21 miles! In future we'll get a cab - about 40 - 50 euros.

We also had the misfortune of flying with Cattle Class with Monarch from the UK. Both flights were nearly 2 hours late and they didn't even apologise. Completely useless as they always have been, but we expected this and had to bear them as there wasn't a 'proper' airplane from our local airport.

This is my second time in this resort....
Hotel location - on the beach - fare from the airport 3 euros something/person all the way to the Maspalomas bus station (4 mins from main entrance to the hotel) so DO NOT BOTHER TO PRE-PAY FOR PRIVATE PICK-UP and pay 20 something pounds - rip-off; the local bus shuttle is fantastic and on time - 50 mins to the resort.
Food - compared to the 4 star hotel in front (IFA FARO) I found the buffet of poorer quality; the food is pretty much the same every time; the food is soaked in salt and due to the fact that there aren't as many guests, some of it goes off quickly (careful with the beans at breakfast); we are healthy eaters and still got upset tummies from the food in the evening. If you are not bothered about piling up on calories, then this is a good place to eat cheap food and if you are a healthy eater then check the food before you eat it (some is from tins, some been in the same platters for 2 days). It is not bad but certainly not handled as well as in other hotels in the same resort. The service, however, is flawless, same as in all the other hotels in the same area, so talk to them when you have a problem - very nice people.
This is the bit where I do not rate this as a 5-star hotel (I would give it a 3star luxury) - the same guests who come all dressed up for dinner (there is a dress code in place) are the guests who lay half-naked on the grounds of the hotel and the swimming pool area throughout the day... a respectable hotel would not allow such behaviour. There is a nudist area on the beach, but of course, these mummified guests need to be seen almost naked (it is nothing like Hollywood-naked, believe me) otherwise they cannot breathe in their fat sacks. It is enough that we have to put up with the smoke which is allowed at breakfast and throughout the hotel grounds... honest, it is a 5-star hotel that is nowhere near the Ritz-Atlanta for example (and I have not picked the best Ritz). You open your window with garden views and instead of admiring the gardens, you see all these middle-aged and very old German women half-naked.... not paradise, not Picasso, quite the opposite. Judging by the way they get dressed up for dinner, I would say they definitely look better dressed .... and should keep it covered!
Would I pick this hotel again? hm... tough one - the gardens are lovely, and so are the sporting facilities, there is a fab whirlpool in the garden area, a massive swimming pool (v quiet) and so many other good points; the food just didn't do it for us, not even the a la carte restaurant -maybe it's the recession, but I prefer Ifa Faro a million times more from this point of view: better choices, better quality, much fresher looking food and better kitchen... I guess we'll have to wait until the end of the holiday to answer this question.

Definitely recommend it to couples and old families. There are facilities for people with disabilities and a doctor on site too.

Repeat visitor here and they really look after us. Staff are very loyal and welcoming. Juan Rivero and Julio in the Krystal Restaurant are great. This place is not for kids and the guests tend to dress up for dinner. Reception furniture is dated. We had a sea view room and it was quiet and the aircon worked. Unfortunate damage to the beach at Maspalomas following the February 2010 storms means that the wonderful gardens at this hotel are even more appreciated.
Tour operator Sovereign not great. Poor Monarch flight and no meals or drinks provided even though Sovereign call themselves luxury operators. Many thanks again to all the staff and manager Marisa at this wonderful hotel, not forgetting Captain the doorman.

Great week. Rooms a little on small size for 5 star hotel but everything else was fabulous. Food brilliant. Great location. We had a lovely relaxing break. Days spent lazing in the beautiful grounds.

Firstly ignore the bad reviews of this hotel, not sure where these people stayed but it cannot have been the same place I've just been!!

I have just returned from THE most relaxing holiday in years with my elderly parents. I cannot praise the staff are 200% the nicest I have ever met from the room cleaners to the bar staff from the waiters to the managers I have never met such lovely people who
always said hello and had a lovely word.

Ok it's not ideal for kids but the sister Riu hotels that are Clubhotels are more suited, perhaps the other reviewers might have tried them!

I am so sad today being home and no longer being spolit rotten with the service and wonderful buffets the hotel offers. I have had the most relaxing time and would be back in a heartbeat.

If you think you deserve a treat....you've found it!

Badly in need of an upgrade./update. Built in 1969, poor layout, some rooms absolutely horrible - we paid to upgrade immediately. Rooms dated and noisy. Kidsclub hardly happened at all. One pool, very dull. Got stuck due to ash, moved to 4star Princess Masapolomas, though not really our cup of tea - big hotel, - much better pools, kids facilities. And substantially cheaper. Go elsewhere.

Fabulous hotel. Looks like a car park, so don't linger over the external pictures, but everything inside is just perfect. Very friendly and efficient staff, lovely rooms, amazing food and the gardens are just beautiful. We also enjoyed having the secret gate to the beach straight from the hotel gardens.
