5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2009

we have stay here about seven times and are going this year 2009 so that must tell you something. The hotel is old but is class .food is very good you have the same table every night . The gardens are large front and back of hotel just the place to enjoy the sun The staff are very helpful okay most of the guests are German but if you try to talk to them they will talk to you we have made many friends that we see year after year It is so nice to dress up at night as most people do but you don't have to Also it is so nice to have your own gate only ten foot from beach

We stayed in Grand Palace for a week in May. After staying in the Marina Suites Puerto Rico the previous year we found the rooms very small. You simply couldnt relax in your room during the day or evening as there was simply nowhere to sit. Add to the fact the hotel itself looked like a WW2 bunker and badly needs updating compared to the more modern hotels in the area at the same price.
The food was geared more towards central europeans and definately not British or Irish but there was a good selection for brekfast. The atmosphere in the hotel was relaxed and the rooms were clean and the staff friendly. The location was ideal...right on the beach so no complaints there.
What really cheesed us off more than anything about the place was on our departure. We checked out and made our way out to the main doors to get a taxi to the airport as they seemed plentiful during our stay and there was a taxi park up spot in the car park of the hotel to service the hotel. Anyway there were a few couples waiting for taxis. We were asked by the hotel attendant had we booked a taxi and i said we hadnt and sat down to wait while the other couples who booked were looked after first. Anyway to cut a long story short we were still waiting 15mins later even though all other couples were gone and there were 3 taxis waiting about 100m away to be called to the door by the attendant. We were looking at each other wondering what the delay was until my girlfriend got up and asked why was no taxi called over for us as we were here 15 mins. The attendant then brought us back to reception to order a taxi there to the bemusement of the chap behind the desk as to why we were back. We then went back out to the front entrance where the attendant promptly whistled over a waiting taxi for us!! Maybe im missing something in spanish culture or behavior but i wasnt impressed by this attitude especially as i had tipped the same attendant for bringing up our bags on our arrival!! Wont be going back there.

first time in gran canaria & couldn't have picked a better hotel. Room was great, was a family garden suite on the ground floor and was spacious & clean. Kids loved the location, right on the beach and the pool and gardens were lovely. Usually like to eat out most nights but this holiday we decided to go half board. Was a great decision as the food was wonderful. Lots of choice and good quality, definately will return. Hotel a little dated but with location and food it didn't matter.

Second visit to this hotel and it would be a pleasure to return again. The food is good and plentiful, facilities are a little dated - but so what! Hotel is very clean and well maintained, service is excellent and staff helpful and friendly. Bedroom and bathroom spacious and well furnished, with lovely views across the garden towards the sea.
Complimentary sparkling wine for my birthday - icing on the cake!

Although this hotel is a little dated there are lots of plus points for this hotel.
The location is fabulous if you like the beach, you just walk straight out onto the beach from the back of the hotel.
It is a 5-minute walk to the shops, bars & restaurants, in a better location than villa del Conde which is where we stayed the year before, which is quite a walk out.
The food & service in the restaurant is outstanding & is also better than the Villa del Conde.-it is the best food I have had in any hotel in the Canaries. The only critism is that at breakfast there is not an omelette station, like in most hotels I have stayed in but if you ask they are more than happy to make you one.

The grounds of the hotel are lovely & you can shade under the trees. The swimming pool is dated, basic but clean & if it was done up this would be an excellent hotel.
I also like the fact that Riu hotel bedrooms are carpeted & thus helps to reduce the noise.
Overall a great hotel in a great location with excellent food & service.

The hotel looks like a 1960's municpal car park. The overall look is dated and needs a huge over haul. The gardens are lovely and well cared for. We had to change rooms as the first room had water dripping from the air conditioning unit overnight and also had black mould growing both inside and outside the AC unit. The hotel were reluctant to move us to another room, and only did so because we refused to stay in the original room. Some staff were aloof and the Maitre D rude as we refused to pay rip off prices for bottled water. The cleanliness of the hotel was good. The choice of food good, but often only just warm. The only way to guarantee hot food was to get items just cooked! We will go back to Maspalomas, great resort, but not back to this hotel. Not really a 5*, more 4*

  • Liked — air conditioning not noisy. Lovely view
  • Disliked — hard beds and pillows.

We visited this hotel in the beginning of August. A very traditional hotel..not sure if it deserves a 5 star rating though however, it has great service and the staff is always willing to help!

We were upgraded to sea view on arrival which was a very nice surprise and the view was really lovely! They took into account all the requests we made when making the booking.

The hotel has a very strange layout and the pool is in the opposite end to the beach. There is also a lovely garden on the way out to the beach with lots of sun beds surrounded by palm trees (great for shade). There is also a Jacuzzi in the middle of the garden.

The staff do come round offering drinks which can be very nice.

I do suggest going for the HB or FB options as the food at the hotel is absolutely outstanding! Good variety and lots of sea food! However, at breakfast time the buffet is very overcrowded.

There is entertainment in the evenings and some activities during the day but all in all it is a very quiet and relaxing hotel.

  • Liked — Great food and very attentive staff
  • Disliked — Strange hotel layout
