“Can't wait for the refurb”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

We return to the riu club Gran Canaria year after year because of it's beautiful food, comfortable rooms and service second to none. Food & service are still the same but sadly I had the most uncomfortable bed ever - I should have complained! Therefore can't wait to return to the new refurb version next year.

AREA: Really lovely, flat level prom just outside the hotel, to Maspalomas. Plenty of Restaurants/cafes, upmarket shops and supermarkets. Beautiful beach at Maspalomas, including a nude area. Weather was perfect but it can be very windy on this Island.

HOTEL: I would not put it in the category of a 4*, more like 3*. Having said that, all the staff were very friendly and helpful, especially the reception staff. I would like to thank Carlos on reception for dealing with a slight problem I had with changing my room - thank you Carlos. The pool area is very large but does need quite of a lot of refurbishing in the pools. Having said all this, I understand that the hotel is being completely refurbished and will be closed from April-July 2013. We were shown the new rooms which I have to say are lovely and a great improvement on the present ones. The outside smoking area is much too near to the non smoking area and the restaurant. Mostly Germans at this hotel and guests still persist in putting their towels on chairs before 7.30 in the morning, even though there are plenty of chairs and space around.

MEALS: Food very nice, but as we were there for 3 weeks it became very samey. One thing I thought would be an improvement is for someone to show the us to a table in the Restaurant, instead of having to wander around looking for somewhere to sit. The waiters were really cheerful and always said goodmorning. The coffee during the day is from a machine, and is dreadful.

Would I go back, yes I would to Melonares but not to the Clubhotel.

Room Tip: Book a room facing the gardens, it's extra but worth it.

we chose Gran Canaria for the better chance of sun - well it was excellent
The Riu Club hotel was a concern after reading some of the reviews after we had booked - but there was no fears what a great hotel, excellent location - walks in either direction from the back of the hotel, casual little town with no hassle from shop keepers. we caught the local bus to Port Mogan, well worth the visit, flowers/canals and certainly an experience on the buses.
The hotel was inclusive and excellent food, service and drinks, champagne for breakfast ! both staff and other holiday makers very friendly.
we chose a room on the 3rd floor, very quiet looking over the gardens of the hotel next door, at least i felt i got some exercise walking the stairs to justify all the food i ate. Will go back next year, which is something we tend not to do.

Room Tip: used a/c at night with the fan, very quiet. this time of year I doubt whether there is much noise f...

we have stayed here twice now as a family and i would recommend this hotel to everybody. the entertainment is varied for both adults and children alike. the only real negative is the no reserving sunbed rule which alas most of our european cousins blatantly ignore.

Having returned from another 3 week stay which we thoughly enjoyed Also many other Repeat guests of all Nationalies . The Hotel Staff Food Cleanliness lived up the the Riu name .
Whilst we feel the Hotel requires a makeover having seen the refurbished Display rooms We were very disappointed that there will no longer be a Bath in any of the rooms this is a very drastic change and when one enjoys staying at the Hotel it would have been nice to have a choice
Rumours about an Infinity Pool removing some of the apartments and a new restaurant with Sea Views have yet to be confirmed
We hope in the Refurbishment they will provide a larger outside area for non smokers The weather was fantastic chilly at Breakfast time and in the Evenings blue skies hot and sunny daytime .Hope all the current staff will be there when the Hotel reopens

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking Riu Palace have sun until 14.00 Centre block rooms sun 11.00 until Sunset on a hig...

anyone wanting a good quality all inclusive hotel, in the winter sun i can recomend this one, stayed in a Riu Palace last year, but the service in this 4 * clubhotel was much better. I deal location, plenty of sunbeds (and yes the hotel was full) an excellent Thomnsons rep bases at the hotel too, who was genuine and not there to push the tours. the hotel is due an upgrade this spring and will be closed for a few months, we were given the opportunity to go view 2 new showrooms, and quite frankly i would prefer them to keep them in the style they are now. The only plus to me withthe new rooms was a walk in shower/wet room and new, higher ,memory foam matresses. The current rooms are, or the one we had very spacious, we had room 2113 ,classed as a garden room, it was on the wing end, overlooking the pool and the sea and the garden. the bed was not the most comfortable and very low, the bathroom was spotless clean, but had a wonderful power shower but over bath, the bath had chipped enamel(it had been painted over) but not very appealing. the room was carpeted, which made it cosy, and stopped the noise of scraping furniture from other nearby rooms. our room was a long wlak from the only set of lifts in the middle of the building, as a lot of older people visit, an extra lift at each side i the mioddle would have helped, i am just recovering from a knee replacement, so the exercise was good for me, 3 lovely pools, 2 jacuzzi, one pool was heated. the sunbeds need replacing, they are very low, and each day you have to go in search of a matress to add to the frame, but they are thin, torn and not very comfortable. As with all Riu hotels the food was to die for, so much choice, the service started off excellent att he begining of the week, but died off a bit mid week when they didnt get tips. the dining room staff seemed to get moved around after a couple of Days which meant you couldnt get any of the witers. The hotel backs onto a lovely promenade a 10 min stroll takes you to a little shopping centre, supermarket, duty free shop and another 15 mins takes you to the famous Maspalomas sand dunes. the hotel doesnt have a beach but there are a couple 10-15 min walk away but nothing spectacular. in all a great holiday and hotel, i would ask the management to rethink the room style they arepolanning for later this year, holiday tip...go on the free blanket trip, a great free day out and visits some lovely places

Room Tip: non would be very noisy, but higher floor gives better views,

we have just returned from a two week stay, before we went I read the reviews and thought what are we going to! but I dont know what people are wanting from a hotel, I can honestly say yes it needs some updating, but every thing was great. Our room had one of the best views in the hotel, the food was excellent plenty of choice and eat as much as you wanted. Plenty to drink service at bars were great. All staff very friendly and nothing was a problem. Plenty of sunbeds no matter what time of day.Rooms were spotlessly clean with plenty of towels beds changed every two days. Weather was great . Animation team worked effortlessly. What more could you ask for, we will definately return.
