“Second stay at Dunas Maspalomas. Bitterly disappointed.”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

After visiting Dunas Maspalomas before we thought we really like to return with our 6 year old son. We arrived on July 14th returned on July 28th 2013. As before we were not disappointed with the clean spacious high quality bungalow. The pools are surrounding gardens are well maintained. The staff are A star. The only downside was the choice of food. The standard of the food was superb. We felt it was catered more for the French as unlike before when it was 50% English and 50% German this time round it was predominantly French. So for the two weeks our 6 year old dined on bread and chips. A huge lack of vegetables. Also he doesn't like Goat, Veal Rabbit etc etc. (neither do we). After speaking to a couple from France they told us it was the first time any French had been to the Canaries. On arrival at the airport they were all greated like they were royalty, which also continued at Dunas Maspalomas. The animation team were only speaking in French and the evening entertainment was aimed at the French too. The Spanish, Germans, English and Dutch felt pushed to the side not even given a second thought from management. Sadly we will not be returning to Dunas Maspalomas i really wouldn't recommend if you have young children purely down to options of food on the all inclusive is pretty poor.

Room Tip: choose a room that has air conditioning if not you can hire fans at 15 euros a week.

My Daughter and myself went for one week’s holiday 3rd - 10th July on an all-inclusive Holiday leaving Dad at home, and I was really impressed with the quality of the bungalows in a beautiful garden setting, The Bungalows and all communal areas were spotless with all the cleaning staff were very visible all the times and always very courteous and great you when you walk past. The choice of food was excellent and there is never a moment goes past that you cannot have something to eat if the restaurant is closed then the pool bar takes over. There are four pools to choose from but only two that we used as our bands were for 3* and the other half of the complex was 4* so we were not able to get drinks there. I cannot tell you how great the staff were at Kids club who switch from German Spanish & English with great ease, and involved everyone together with different activity’s every day. I can’t wait to go back and try 4* (Bigger Restaurant, more entertainment and bigger pool)

Myself and my sister stayed in the bungalows for a week 20-27th on All-Inclusive basis. Honestly we did not know what to expect as we always go to 4/5* hotels, but we were pleasantly surprised. The bungalows had just been refurbished and were spotless and the areas around them were lovely. I agree with another post, there is no air-con and I suspect this could get unconfortable in hotter weather.

The complex is large and there are plenty of pools, but we decided to stay down by the bungalows as it was quieter and no problem getting beds, except when the local Spanish arrive for the weekend, as they proceeded to put their towels out to keep beds and in some cases did not arrive all day, otherwise we had no problems.

The restaurant had just re-opened and we found the variety to be plentiful, however not all of the hot food was actually hot - but otherwise we enjoyed the choice. Staff at this complex are friendly and no matter who they were always greeted you when you walked by, in particular we found Lisa at reception to be very helpful and always had a smile on her face.

Meloneras is the nearest place to visit, this is where we usually stay and love it up there. There are plenty of shops and a lovely walk along the seafront, with plenty of bars & restaurants to choose from, if you want to try something different. You can walk there in 15 mins or a taxi will cost you €3.00.

We would defintely return with our families and would recommend this lovely resort.

Spent a week here and was really impressed with the quality of the accommodation. Lovely garden setting with flowers and palm trees everywhere. Location is a bit away from the main areas but taxis are cheap and very frequent. Food was a little disappointing as it seemed to cater more towards Spanish and my 2 kids were usually eating chips and bread most nights. Went all inclusive but not the best compared with other all inclusive venues I have been too. No ice lollies on offer but little tubs of ice creams are available. Pool area is very nice but beds are usually reserved by 0830/0900hrs each morning. Rooms cleaned often and towels changed frequently. Was impressed that our towels were changed the day before we left for the UK. Spanish seem to invade the place from Friday afternoons until Sunday evening and you will notice the noise levels increase. Had a problem with a group of young lads running around the complex shouting at 0100hrs on the Saturday night. entertainment and activities throughout the day was poor. Mini disco music dated and hardly anyone around. All inclusive drinks end at 2300hrs but the bar area is open until 0100hrs. Would stay at the Dunas hotel chain again but maybe different location next time. Staff were friendly enough and even though I have mentioned a few negatives, this complex has to be one of the better I have stayed at in this area and would recommend it as a good base for a great holiday.

My partner and I (age 46 and 25) have recently returned from a 7 night (25th June 13-2nd July 13) all inclusive stay at 'Dunas Maspalomas' and found it to be better than we expected.
We booked with 'OnTheBeach' and they also provided a return bus transfer from the airport (which took about 45 minutes) however they dropped us off outside the 'Dunas Villas and Suites' entrance- not the hotels fault, unless it was a break down in communication between them and OnTheBeach? ANYWAY- we were greeted outside by a member of staff who immediately took our luggage and invited us to reception to check in (at 13.00pm instead of the stated time of 14.00pm as our flight was early) when he realised we were on the wrong part of the complex he drove us around to the correct entrance- despite it being only a short walk- and this didnt seem any trouble at all.
We checked in and were assigned bungalow 4154, we were given a map of the entire complex with the bungalow number circled and clear directions given. We were fortunate enough to be given a bungalow quite close to the reception area, which is also where the main pool and dining area is. First impression of the complex was wow, isnt it quiet!
Upon arrival at our bungalow, we found a plastic table and 4 chairs outside on the slabbed 'terrace' and we were amazed at how much space there was inside- it was like a tardis! We had a one bedroom bungalow but there are 2 bedroom places available... The bungalow looked spotless and didnt have that musty smell you often get in hotels/apartments, it seemed quite fresh. The sliding door you enter through leads you to the lounge area, which comprised of a 4 seater sofa and an armchair, not the comfiest things in the world but... they were wicker so its hardly surprising! Plus after a day you get used to it anyway! There was also a flat screen TV mounted to the wall in the corner.
To our right was the bathroom, again a sliding door (with no lock), and this had a shower over bath, though the bath had no taps or a plug so it couldnt actually be used as a bath! There was also a toilet (obviously!) and washbasin. The bathroom decor was very light and there was a big mirror behind the washbasin, as well as a wall mounted magnifying mirror which was situated next to the hairdryer. We were both surprised at the shower, we expected it to be fairly low pressured with barely any hot water but we had no issues with it whatsoever. Very powerful and hot water always available! (I spend about 10-15 minutes showering and my partner the same). The towels provided were a dark green colour, and clean! No funny smells or questionable stains! They did not provide toiletries.
As you walk out of the bathroom, to your left is the bedroom. It was called a 'double' but it was just two single beds pushed together, made up with separate sheets, so we couldnt actually sleep next to each other under the same sheet as it was too cramped and when we tried the beds moved apart and I nearly fell down the gap :) It wasnt a big deal though because there was no air conditioning in the bungalow it would have been too hot anyway! The sheets were all clean, again no stains! There were two blankets in the wardrobe, not needed on the bed at night but handy for lounging around with! There was a dressing table and chair in the bedroom with a large mirror, with a plug socket next to it and a light above, there were also sockets and lights either side of the beds. There was only one bedside table with drawers but theres a triple wardrobe so its not like there is limited storage space! The bedroom door is not sliding and also has a lock, not sure why you'd have a lock on the bedroom but not the bathroom but hey ho!
Straight ahead of the bedroom is the kitchen, with cups, plates, bowls, glasses and cutlery. There was no kettle but there were saucepans and a hob so could boil the water the old fashioned way! Theres also a coffee machine, fridge, toaster and a microwave.
To the right of the kitchen was the door out to the 'courtyard' which was a small tiled area with a clothes airer.. pretty basic but it suited us :)
The bungalow was non smoking but you can request an ashtray and smoke just outside the door. We went all inclusive and so had no real use for the kitchen other than to make cups of tea, they did not provide tea bags etc so we purchased necessary items from the supermarket which is situated just outside the complex, though I guess if you're really stingey you could just take teabags from the dining area each morning..
Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all served in the dining area which is opposite reception. It was very clean and there was quite a variety of food there. Always fresh fruit and salad and meat being cooked on the grill each lunchtime and evening meals. Plenty of bread too. There were always chips served at lunch and dinner, usually rice and some sort of pasta too, a selection of fish and meats, desserts were fantastic-cakes, blamanche, ice cream and fruit in syrup. Breakfast had a big selection : cereal, hot food eg bacon, eggs and also doughnuts, cakes and pancakes. The drinks were self service in the dining area, a selection of soft drinks, water, wine and beer- I'd recommend getting your drinks before finding a table then when you have put them down go to get your food. The staff were really quick at clearing up and often when we had gone for our dessert the table had been re done with clean table cloths and place settings! Not annoying for us but probably peeved the staff- but they never did show it!
We only used one pool- the main one by reception, although upon walking around the complex we found about 4 more! There were always sunbeds available, with parasols, but people were reserving them anyway.. However staff were putting notes on the 'reserved' beds saying this was not allowed...
The 'pool bar' was open until about 22.00pm, a selection of snacks such as chips, hotdogs and sandwiches were available during the day, as well as ice creams and fresh fruit. Drinks were served by a friendly barman, apart from hot drinks which were self service. Drinks were all served in plastic cups, even hot drinks so definitely recommend doubling up on the cups to avoid spilling!
The evening 'entertainment' was quite poor, a little disco for the kids but not much for adults, when we were there we had bingo and a 'ladies night'- which was a bit of dancing, it was meant to be burlesque I think but it really wasnt coming across as that good, and on our last night the was a 'parrot show'- this was 6 very noisy birds riding small bikes and raising a flag, it was more entertaining watching them try to attack each other to be honest!
I was charged 18 euro to use wifi for one week, but only one person can log in using the same code at any one time, fine for two people but not so good I guess if there are a few of you...The wifi also doesnt work in the bungalow even though I was assured it worked in the whole complex! It worked by the pool, in the dining area and reception and went as far as our terrace..it was ok apart from constantly having to sign in! beach towels were provided at 1 euro per day, we just bought some from the supermarket for around 12 euro each but they are cheaper near the beach! I think the safe requires about a 20 euro deposit as does the TV remote (which you need if you want to turn it on!) You get the deposit back though, so its not a big deal.
On a whole the complex was really clean, everywhere we looked there was a member of staff cleaning something, even the pool attendants wiping the steps into the pool! Didnt see any cockroaches or lizards anywhere on the complex but there were plenty of lizards on the 15-20 minute walk to the beach! there were a few cats that roamed around but they didnt look flea-bitten or mangy, I didnt touch them though!..
You are able to use all the pools on the complex regardless of whether you're staying in the 3 star or 4 star area. Don't waste your time with the 'gym' its only 4 or 5 pieces of equipment.. but who goes on holiday to work out anyway?!
All in all, it was a relaxing stay and I probably would go to Dunas again, maybe would stay in the 4 star accommodation though as these have air con, or even the hotel they own by the beach :)

Room Tip: Rooms get really stuffy at night so all the time you're in the bungalow have every window and do...

I am writing this sitting outside our bungalow (4405). The bungalows are fine but have no air con, onlu the suites and villas at the sister hotel have air con and
its mighty hot at the mo. You can hire a fan or buy one at a local shop, its about the same price
We have only had 1 or 2 cockroaches - dont bother buying the spray from the supermarket -it doesnt work. The best defence, which has worked 100% is to use one of the bedspreads (you wont need it) and lay it in front of the sliding doors coz theres a half inch gap where they seem to get on, and put a towel under the foor that opens into the clothesdrying/cou

rtyard bit. Personally I also put something down on the inside of the bedroom door but thats just me being paranoid.
The staff are lovely, will do anything to help, the pools are great and not too busy at the moment.

The restaurant could be better, furnishings are a bit dated, never seem to be enough staff clearing tables but they try their best and are always polite.

You can have lunch in the main restaurant , which is a scaled down version of dinner or there are 'snacks' atthe pool bar, namely burgers, hot dogs, chips, toasties, salad bits and buns. This is the same every day (oops I forhot to mention the fruit - watermelon, ahd small tubs of ice cream. Drinks at the pool bar are served in plastic glasses, including hot drinks which are self serve, i would suggest you use two plsstic glssses inside one another, especially for hot drinks.
Dinner in the restaurant is ok, we tend to stick to the treshly cooked steak and salad bit there are plenty alternatives. The bread is always nice as well. Breakfast is what you would expect, a mixture of english, spanish and continental, with cereals etc.
At night the 'disco' bar is open til 11pm, which is where the entertainment is , if thats what you can call it. The minidisco seems to last forever , and God bless them the animacion team try....or maybe I should say they are very trying. Tonight was the comedy show......after 4 vodka n tonics it still wasnt funny. It was so bad it was embarrassing. Cant wait for the flamenco show on Friday. ...

On a more serious note, if you arrive very late at night mske sure u get one of the staff to take you to your bungalow. Failing that use the torch app on your phone to see the numbers on the bungalows. Note to management, lights above the numbers on the bungalows and signposts to point out which numbers are down which paths would be extremely helpful!

There isnt much in the surrounding area. The beach is a bit of a hike, but there is a free bus, or it costs about 4 euros for a taxi.

In spite of its bettrr points I dont think we will be coming back.
You can look forward to the full post mortem when we get home!

Room Tip: Book dunas villas and suites not bungalows. Well worth paying extra.

My partner and stayed at Dunas for a week in early June. From the moment we arrived at 3am we were made very welcome. We were offered food if we were hungry and shown where our bungalow was on the map. Come morning we made our way to breakfast, it was as stated a buffet which had everything from cereals, fruits and eggs to croissants and pan au chocolates. Lunch and dinner were served in the same resteraunt and were of an equal variety - the Mexican theme night was a personal favourite. Drinks & snacks were available at the pool side bars and I must say the staff were very good. There were 5 pools, all of which had plenty seating available and were pretty peaceful for a family resort. We made our way round the pools using a different one each day, the downside was that the pool bar between 2 of the bigger pools was closed while we were there. The kids club seemed very good whereas I found the evening entertainment to be a litte repetitive for adults - some other reviewers suggested going to the other entertainment which is located at the other end of the resort, this was also closed. The bungalows were fantastic and the cleaning staff were very good. Area around the resort was nice - beach is a 10 minute walk and Holiday world (a theme park type activity) a similar distance. There's other resteraunt and bars nearby and a smashing golf course literally across the bridge. As mentioned I'd have loved the entertainment to be a tad better but what was provided was very family orientated. I'd go back without hesitation.
