Hotel Dunas Suites and Villas Resort
Ranked #39 of 218 Hotels in Maspalomas
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 15, 2012

Firstly I'm astonished by the amount of positive reviews for this hotel - the basis from which we booked our holiday. Don't be fooled.

1) Room was regularly visited by cockroaches and very dated decor. The Dunas website photographs are simply misleading.

2) The restaurant was always overcrowded, the food was bland and repetitive but my biggest annoyance was the outright rudeness of the staff. We didn't come across one who didn't grunt at us, this is having waiting most evenings at least 20 minutes to be offered a drink.

3) The pool area needs attention. We witnessed two members of staff making a fuss of broken tiles around the pool at the start of our holiday, 10 days later they were still the same.

There are much nicer hotels in Maspalomas at a similar or cheaper price.

We were so excited about going to this 4 star hotel. We stayed in a villa on an all-inclusive basis for ten days in October and have been badly let down. This is a spanish hotel brand for purely spanish people. British or english speaking people do not get a look in. The main problems wth this hotel for me were:

1. Service. Staff were rude and only spoke Spanish so could not help if you needed anything. When you did try and communicate, they were rude and abrasive.

2. Food. Average and the menu never changes. Each breakfast, lunch and dinner was the same food, same options, after a week it got very boring to come and have food in the hotel. There are a huge amount of flies in the restaurant that are gorging on the food too- there is no air con in the one restaurant that exists in the entire hotel and it is noise and a'run with children- reminded me of a school canteen. You need to order drinks in the evening slot but only those that speak spanish got the waiters attention, we had to make a real fuss to get a drink- which isn't what you pay for.

3. Cockroaches- these were in our villa each and every day and night. Not pleasant.

4. Children- this hotel is hugely popular with families and those with small children. If you are looking for a quiet break in the sun, this hotel is not for you.

Dunas is a spanish brand with hotels across Spain so they get their custom from their online Spanish guests. We made a real mistake reading the good reviews and booking here- we shall not come here again. It is not 4 star, probably low three to high 2 at most. It was expensive for what it was.

Never again.

Villa was nice, Staff were nice. But it is aimed for the Germans and Spanish.

Catering for very poor, being vegetarian all they had for the non meat eaters was fries and salad.Food labels was't clearly marked eg on the label is says cheese sandwich but be noticed it had ham in it, every dish and meat contained meat. Had the same food every night.

Cleanliness - Beddings wasn't changed often, Used dirty towels were put back on rail to use again. Floor wasn't moped.

Glad we only stayed 4 nights couldn't stay any longer. Not worth for what you pay for, especially the poor variety of food for non meat eaters.

Went for relaxing holiday suppose we got that.

Dunas villas and suites in Maspalomas Gran Canaria is a family orientated destination, good quality accomodation. Bungalow suite was very clean in my experience, and well kept. Staff were very accomodating and knowledgable about the surrounding area and additional activities were available at an extra cost. Food was quite reasonable, though not always piping hot, but plenty of choice. We went mid September, 34 degrees, good pool areas but not much in the way of daytime/evening entertainment, thought the entertainment staff worked very hard with what they had to offer. A relaxing break. Not much to offer in the town of Maspolomas so better to go further afield, for the more adventurous fun-seeker. Pretty decent restaurants if your prepared to spend £40-£50 per head, otherwise there were plenty of 'fish/chips, pizzas, chinese etc etc' places to eat if your on a smaller budget. Beware the time-share operators everywhere you go. In short, a nice place to stay and relax and chill-out, or to play a little golf (which is about the only place locally where you may see some grass), though a little barren for a typical volcanic destination. We quite enjoyed it as an all-inclusive short holiday break.

We stayed in the villa which was really nice, the complex was good its true that its aimed at the spanish and german ist week only heard 1 english couple a bit better the 2nd wk, the entertainment was very poor for adults mainly done by the staff and usually not what was on the notice board, the only entertainment you could be sure of was for the kids, next time am going to an adult only hotel.Although i thought the food was reasonable a lot of the time it was lukewarm and by 2nd wk getting repetitive. We had a real problem with a couple of the waiters at the disco bar we asked for alcoholic cocktails and were served them without the alcohol, were serving them out of a jug unlike others staff, when confronted they denied it also kept forgetting our order, very very poor service ended up going up to the bar ourselves when they were on which unfortunately was most of the time, repeatedly saw them getting other peoples orders wrong as well, that is another reason why we wont be back to this hotel! or any other dunas hotel, the piscina pool bar was excellent though no complaints about that the head waiter very good, also on the 2nd last night of a 2wks holiday we got a sheet of paper on our tables 'asking people to remember that they have to dress for dinner no tshirts shorts or flip flops' now i wouldnt mind this but we were never given any information prior to this! so we dressed for dinner then on our last night found people wandering in with tshirts short flip flops, i think they were new arrivals which means that they still were not informing people to dress for dinner very shoddy information setup!of the times we went to the reception there was a couple of times we were completely ignored, there were people standing there doing nothing or 2 of them in discussion with each other never said anything to us like 'will be with you in a moment' they just ignored us, very poor service
also the beach is about 30mins away there is a bus service, the beach is excellent, but just watch when you get off the bus and walk down to the beach there is a stretch of the promenade that you cannot get away from getting pestered by the timeshare people, they dont take no for an answer were following us or standing right in front of us, or blacks trying to grab you to and try and get bracelets on your wrist and then charge you and they were very offensive, and the timeshare people are all over maspalomas, I did really like maspalomas but that was a part of it that spoilt it for me

Room Tip: get the villas that have air conditioning in them

Dear guests

Thank you for your review of your stay with us.
We are very glad to hear that you liked our villas and the pool bar. But we are in the same time sorry to hear that you were unsatisfied with our staff in the reception and at “the disco bar” where you felt ignored and forgotten. Normally our staff is friendly, courteous and counts to one of our strengths. We are very sorry that our usual high standard where not provided during your stay.

Also, regarding the restaurant were sorry that it did not meet your satisfaction in the way that we hoped. As we accommodate an international clientele, our chef always try to offer a great variety of Canarian and international meals.

Finally we hope to be able to welcome you and your family again and be able to give you a better experience.

Best regards:

Visiting Gran Canaria for second time, i thought trying a big resort. Everything was great. Staff both at the reception, or the restaurant, always helpful, kind and smiling. The suite was very big and comfortable. Living room, huge bedroom, luxury wardrobe, safebox, and huge bathroom. The most amazing was the restaurant. Breakfast with a great variety of food, fresh fruits, and omelets. Dinner was suprising from the quality and quantity of food. The only annoying thing ( at least for me) was the fact that families with little kids, during dinner, were playing around, and sometimes screaming!! Nevertheless, it was okafter a few glasses of wine!! Definetely , i recommend this resort!!

You can also use the pools @ the 3* bungalowpark ; nearly all heated.
Situated 20minutes walk from the beach & about 15 from nearby shops/bars.
very well kept garden,
good maintenance service,
supermarket next to the grounds ;not cheap
very nice food
the kids entertainment & miniclub hosts could use some coffee,
