“do not look anywhere else”
Reviewed November 17, 2009

Our idea of Gran Canaria was a pensionado island, boring and ok if you need a rest.
However, this place was perfect, excellently located directly at the sea front, quiet, clean and something to highlight here: great staff. They were fast, correct, very friendly and with good humor. They speak all languages, but if you try your best spanish, you will win their hearts and have an even better time. Try the suites, they are located in the garden (close to the 50m swimming pool), and offer the best.
We booked the dinner buffets, with the idea that we could go to other restaurants if we had had enough of the place. Not necessary though to escape, the food was just perfect, no need to go anywhere else, just relax and enjoy the place and excellent service of the staff.
One day, we will be back, hopefully not far in the future.

Just returned and moved from Riu clubhotel which was all inclusive and fine but not for us (Jan, Thomson rep was very helpful with this request and understanding). Walking in the Riu Palace was completely different. Everything in this hotel is perfect and the staff are amazing, all of them, 10 out of 10 in terms of customer service it is a fabulous culture. Food was excellent, buffet but also table service if required. Pools were fantastic, especially one nearest to the sea, with great sunbeds and no rush to book them..you cld easily get one at 9am. Location is great with shop, restaurants and bars 5 mins away, quality of all those was "European",rather than the dodgy Spain of the past. Nothing to fault (well maybe air con could be higher!)..have been to G. Canaria several times and this is the best hotel by a long shot. Just go!

Stayed here for 10 nights from may28-june7.
We had half board here and although we arrived there very late
at night they had left food in our room for us which i thought was
very decent.
The reviews about this hotel are accurate and thats what helped
me make my choice.
We booked a double room online and sadly this was 2 single beds
pushed together so beware of this.
I noticed online you could book a room with a seaview for an extra
£130 approx....i wouldnt bother as you'd
be lucky to have a sea view from any room as theres villas in front of the
hotel and massive palm trees which unless you were staying on the
top floor at the front of the hotel then you wouldnt see much.
The food was fantastic and there was plenty of choice and variety especially
with fish, many of which i never heard of but they were very good and cooked
perfectly. There was even a section devoted to pizzas.
The staff were ever so friendly and couldnt do enough for you and always
greeted you no matter where they saw you in the hotel tho i guess this was policy.

Outside, there were loads of sunbeds with 2 pools so there was never any
shortage there despite all the germans but saying that i would say it was quiet
during our stay in the resort so things might be different in july/august.
You get a card from reception for your beach towels and you also get
cushions in the shape of the sunbeds so its quite comfortable.

I didn't see or hear any irish speaking voices in my entire stay and very few
english speakers anyway which meant a drinking session in the hotel
was never gonna happen.
They have entertainment every night starting around 10pm which is average
enough and any night i looked in i never seen anymore than 15-20 people and
its quite a big room.
They have a very small selection of beers also and krombacher and 1 spanish local
beer are the only ones available on draught so that pretty much ruled out the bar for me.
I would say it was 80-90% german and quite a mix of older and young couple
tho id estimate 60% of the residents were over 45 during my stay.
In the lobby there's 3 internet stations and its costs 1euro for 15 mins on it.
Theres a gym here also which is ok...2 bikes, 1 stepper, 1 treadmill, 1 rower
and a multigym. It's adequate.
Beside the gym theres a room with a sauna/jacuzzi with a sign on the door
saying "NUDES ONLY" so i guess that'll give you some idea what nationality
will be using this facility more so than others.
You also have all the other facilities like massage (89eu for a full body)
a hairdresser and the doctor comes twice a week for a half hour.

The beach is a 10 minute walk (maspalomas) and its 4km of beautiful beach
with a mix of nudies in certain spots if ure into that.
Great way of getting a bit of exercise in to work off the beer.
The shopping centres are a 5mins walk from the hotels also and theres
plenty of shops tho a lot of these are designer ones which are much
cheaper than at home but still expensive enough.
Plenty of restaurants by the beach also.
The resort was quiet at night (wrong time to come maybe)
with only 1 irish/english pub in the area which isnt any bigger than
the average kitchen so again this isnt the resort if youre planning
a drinking holiday and i didnt see any karaoke bars.
We went into playa des lingles for a night and all the bars were quiet
and run down and didnt get busy till very late...i would recommend
puerto rico for a drinking holiday much quicker than playa des lingles.
And talk about being hassled passing every bar..it was endless.

Theres also a nice promenade where we stayed which is lovely in the
evening with a few street performers and plenty of beggars during
the day which gets annoying after a while but i can assure you that
you get 10 times more hassle in playa des lingles.

the hotel rooms have lcd tvs which mainly foreign channels but
theres a few good english movie channels and eurosport in german.
No sky sports for those of you who were hoping for football and
there isnt anywhere in the hotel besides with tvs.
The bedrooms are nice tho the walls are quite thin. I could hear a bloke
snoring next door but it was only for one nite thankfully.
Theres a hotel next door to it called the costa lopesan and this is
amazing from the outside and the pool there has to be seen.
Lastly we paid £995 for 10 nites half board.
It was around 160 less for b+b so you would be made
not to spend the extra really.

Overall a very relaxing holiday.

We wanted a break with early sun, relaxation and good food and were not disappointed. The hotel situation is first class, the gardens and pool area are exceptional. The staff were friendly and attentive without any familiarity.
The food at breakfast and dinner was very good for a buffet with very wide choices - check out the pudding in the far corner of the buffet, ice cream with various cooked fruit in syrup etc. plus a generous swig of liqueur to top it off - fantastic!
The buffet is arranged on two sides of a central corridor in the middle of the dining room and it does get a bit hectic when everybody is weaving about finding what they want - a few extra feet would be an improvement. However there was no shortage of any of the food options available.
The rooms are fine although the bath room was a bit dated. Our view of the sea from the second floor was restricted but no less attractive for that. The noise from the other rooms was sometimes noticeable, the one above in particular - why does someone need to put on shoes with noisy heels to go to the bathroom at 4 or 5 am?
We spent most days by the pool, it was generally peaceful and we had no problems with getting sunbeds or towels.
The fact that most of the other guests were from Germany (and Belgium or Holland) was a plus factor for the general standards they expect and have themselves.
You can go through the hotel grounds out onto the promenade by the sea that runs in front of the hotel giving a pleasant walk in both directions. The sand dunes are worth visiting with some interesting sights!
We had a few good evenings at the 19th Hole, in Boulevard Faro a short stroll from the hotel, where they had live music which was enjoyed by the wide variety of customers there.

Sorry for late review. My wife and I stayed at Riu Meloneras in august 2007 for ten days. All we can say about this place is very positive. The food is superb, rooms are very clean and big. Very good service. Location is good, close to restaurants, clubs and shops. We would recommend this hotel to everyone.

An amazing hotel. The staff are the friendliest i've ever met in any hotel on Gran Canaria (and this is our fifth hotel we've been to!) Rooms are a little dated however, very clean with maid service every day. The pools are clean, there are always sunbeds no matter what time you come down to the pool. If you want front row sunbeds arrive at 8.30 to collect some towels and you'll definately get some!

Food is fantastic. Breakfast you are absolutely spoilt for choice. Evening meal consists of a buffet or table service and in my experience there is always something you could eat and there is plenty of choice! Don't listen to earlier moaners the evening meals are good!

In my experience the staff love kids and are more than happy to make a fuss of them by giving away hotel sweets and biscuits! The pool staff were great especially MARTIN who was great with the kids. VICTOR the porter is also very friendly and when the kids ran over to see him he instan reaction was where is your mummy coz he couldn't see me. They really do look out for the children.

The mini disco was a little short only lasting for 20 minutes and in other resorts you would get a full half an hour, this could be expanded on i think. They do give the kids a free cocktail at the end which i think is a brilliant idea.

The hotel is mainly full of German guest with only a few English, however this didn't bother me at all.

My only complaint is that we arrived at 4am and had to drag our bags to our rooms by ourselves! We were put in a noisy room next to the local casino/nightclub which was very noisy. The next day we asked at reception to be moved and they moved us with no problem at all...they are very helpful! Rooms 29 and 30 are GREAT, very quiet!

Hope this helps!

Just returned from two weeks at the Rui Palace Meloneras Resort, Gran Canaria and this is a nice hotel rated 4 stars. The gardens and pool area are superb and very well kept. The pools are very clean and there are plenty of sun beds. Needless to say as the guests are predominantly German there is much early reserving of sun beds but this is totally unnecessary as there are more than enough for all guests.
The staff are excellent and eager to please. The rooms are spacious and nicely furnished and the maids keep them spotlessly clean and tidy.

We booked as a package through Sovereign and paid £200 each extra for sea view rooms. It was therefore particularly disappointing to find that the first room we were allocated on the 2nd Floor had the tiniest evidence of a sea view. I asked for a higher room which was quickly agreed but this was towards the side and had a squeaky air conditioning unit on the roof nearby. After a call from the Sovereign rep we were moved to a more central upper room. It is however disappointing to feel that having paid considerably more we were originally palmed of with a lesser room.

Dinner is served in two sittings at 6pm and 8pm and there was no mention of this in the Sovereign brochure. Had we known we would not have booked? The food is of only a fair quality although being a buffet there is plenty of it. During the two weeks it was very repetitive. You can choose to have the main course served but effectively there are two choices and it comes plated. There is an A la Carte restaurant which you can use if you are on half board, but the menu is not extensive and does not change so we only used it once in our fortnight. Wines are reasonably priced but a 500cl bottle of water at Euro 1.80 is a rip off. I would not call the food 4 star by any stretch of the imagination. Breakfast is very good and nice if it can be taken on the terrace. Room Service is available for breakfast at a charge but a simple thing like a bucket of ice was not and had to be collected from the bar! Not 4 star!

There is a peculiar arrangement with pool towels. You are issued with a card to be given up in exchange for a towel but these are only available between 08.30-11.00 and 13.00-15.00, so if you go out for the day and have not picked up a towel before you leave and arrive back after 15.00 they are not available.
Wireless internet is available free in the reception area if you have your own laptop; other wise computer terminals are available in reception at Euro 1 for 15 mins.
The hotel is not in expensive and consequently is questionable value for money.
