We have just returned from a lovely stay at the riu palace. There are rooms in the main hotel as well as villas in the grounds of the hotel which are nearer to the pools. The hotel is shaped a little like an inverted horse shoe which you can see from the picture, the rooms on the 3rd floor above reception have the best view and sun from around midday . We had room 2073 which has the morning sun. There is not much of a sea view so don't upgrade for that , however, you would want to overlook the centre area of the hotel for best views so e mail the hotel a couple of weeks before you go. All staff are exceptional and the hotel very clean , are waiter at dinner name was Manolo, he was very attentive and funny, making shapes out of servietts for us. There a wide variety of choice of food.
We sat at the 2nd pool as we like the sea view, there were plenty of chairs with thick cushions for the sunbeds. There is a gate at the back of the hotel leading to a lovely promenade along the sea with designer shops and a great atmosphere. The whole area is disabled friendly my dad had his wheel chair and hired a motor scooter. We did try to walk to Mespalomas but the path there is not so good, we did not like the area much there either so were very pleases we chose Riu Palace Meloneras over Riu Grand in maspolomas.
If you like a tea/coffee in the room take a kettle, the hair dryer is not powerful for long hair. We were there 7th to 14th Jan, the mornings and evenings are chilly, we asked for blankets for the beds, but the days were around 25 degrees with a lovely breeze. Tui the German Thomson have quite a large presence with a large number of over 50's. I would recommend the villas for the younger people and families if you like
more privacy.

Room Tip: Villas 5141 5092 5181 great views Hotel room around 2050 or 3050 or rooms to the right of the hotel...

We returned from a 7 day stay at this hotel on the 12th January, a last minute booking. From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome and noticed how beautiful the environment was around the hotel. It was Three Kings Day (the local celebration of Christmas) so Christmas decorations made the hotel look even prettier. We stayed in a first floor Villa Suite (5028)overlooking palm trees and banana trees in the gardens, it was beautiful with a balcony that felt quite private and had plenty of sun most of the day. The suite comprised of a good sized bedroom, small living room area with sofa and chair, coffee table, tv and a small entrance lobby with a fridge. If you like a cuppa it's best to take a travel kettle as that's not supplied. Also the hairdryer was fixed on the bathroom wall and not very efficient so take your travel drier (I forgot mine which was a pain). The suite was cleaned 'thoroughly' everyday (would have preferred fluffier towels to be picky!). Plenty of sunbeds around the two pools, towels were provided. The pool area was hosed every evening, everywhere looked very clean. Swimming pool was cold in January but once we'd plucked up courage to duck under the water we got used to it and enjoyed it. The dining arrangement in two sittings, one at 6pm and one at 8pm seemed to work well. We were able to change the time we had dinner as long as the head waiter is informed the day before. We didn't feel any rush to get us out when we ate at 6pm and didn't see food disappearing! I just want to say that the Head Waiters, namely Phillippe and Said couldn't have been more obliging, as I have a special diet and they couldn't do enough to make sure my requirements were met. The food there is a very high quality, with show cooking of roast meats, fish etc as well as a good choice of desserts including flambe (very generous with the splash of brandy!). There is an a la carte restaurant too, but the buffet was too good to miss. The hotel is in a very pleasing location, with a long promenade for a good walk, which is accessed through a gate at the garden end. To the left are a supermarket, restaurants, cafes, shops and eventually the famous Dunes. It was a cool temperature first thing in the morning and in the evening so at this time of the year have a jacket or cardi handy, you'll be glad of it. We can't wait to go back to this lovely hotel to be pampered again, highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Villa suites overlooking the garden are lovely.

Le +++++++ : the staff. Amazingly friendly (but never indescreet or pushy!), always there to help, give an advice. i travel quite a lot but never met such lovely people. Martin, mi corazon !!
Otherwise, the hotel itself is quite beautiful. Lots of room by the pools. Buffet for every taste.
85% of the customers are German but, compared to other destinations, they are very very quiet... ;}}
The "promenade" is directly connected to the hotel and you have a key to access it. Very very safe.

This is definitely a good hotel, but we could not help getting the holiday factory feeling. We had a spacious enough appartment with an own terrace in one of the small houses spread out in the garden. The appartment was functional with comfortable furniture and very good reading light. The safe though was placed in the bottom of a cupboard so you had to stretch down under the floor to reach your things. It was rather rusty and dirty inside as well. Not the smartest place for a safe since most of the guests seemed to be retired people. There was a problem with small ants in the bathroom as well. Finding a free sunbed by the pool was not a problem even though the hotel seemed to be quite full. Breakfast was fine with lots of things to choose. Service was professional and friendly. All in all a nice stay.

Very good stay in mid November at this Riu. Typically good Riu Palace accommodation/restauarant and service etc. This hotel seemed a bit smaller than other Riu's I've stayed at which made a nice change. Arrangements are the same as other hotels in the change regarding outside towels and the sensible two dinnere sittings (6pm or 8pm) which can be changed throughout your stay. This hotel doesn't have a beach because of the location but does have a locked gate that guests have a pass to that gives access to a nice promenade area with shops/bars that then give way to the sand dunes. Overall excellent stay, I would definitely recommend this hotel. I hadn't been to Gran Canaria before but recommend it over Fuerteventura any day.

Room Tip: I was in ground floor room 92 which was fine. From the design of the hotel I doubt any rooms would e...

The gardens and buildings are beautifully designed. While many places cram as many rooms as possible into the area, here they left huge garden spaces between the chalets and limited them to 2 stories. The result is a very pleasant environment.

I also felt the hotel was very well managed. For example they made up beds including the mattress toppers I had asked for and when I had to change rooms (see below) they immediately sent two people over to put the toppers into the new room. Not long ago I stayed in an expensive hotel in Rhodes where they were systematically overbooking – a scandalous practice causing great inconvenience to guests who often had to go elsewhere for a night or crowd two room’s of people into one. The management of Riu gave me sufficient confidence that I cannot imagine they would ever do such a thing.

Staff were helpful and efficient, there wasn’t much noise and the buffet dinner and breakfasts were good. One tiny thing that pleased me is they had normal hangers in the wardrobes. Am I the only one who hates those theft proof ones where you have to fiddle to get the hanger off the hook? (Perhaps it is because most of the guests are German and they don’t steal coat hangers.)

Now the problem: I stayed in a chalet (5136) which had a strong musty smell. We thought it would go away if we left the door to the balcony open but we ended up having to keep it open all night and the smell still didn’t completely go (Plus I woke up with a bad cold which meant I was ill on my return home and missed a week of work – hardly the outcome one expects from a restful holiday but I accept it is largely my bad luck). The next day I changed rooms. The new one (5156) had a strong smell of organic solvent which had either been used to clean the furniture or to get rid of a musty smell. It smelled like creosote. It was not as bad as the previous room and keeping the window open was enough to keep it under control, though it never completely went away. Management really needs to sort this out as it could spoil a good hotel.

Room Tip: Bring a travel kettle

Agree with the comments from COSKYDOODLE. Just returned from 1 weeks stay here, using Thomson, if you are British don't go to this Hotel. They are not interested in you unless you are German. Found the Middle Management very arrogant, the owners need to teach their staff the meaning of "HOSPITALITY" the Restaurant staff approach you in the middle of your holiday looking for money . The food quality is not as good as we have enjoyed in other Rui Hotels and the entertainment now very dated. Have seen the same act 3 times. The Carpet in the Lounge had a dirty smell , could not sit in there. Not good value for your money. We would not return to this Hotel.

Room Tip: Some of the Apartments are very close to the service area of the local Supermarket/Shopping Centre...
