MedPlaya Hotel San Eloy
Ranked #23 of 43 Hotels in Tossa de Mar
Reviewed September 24, 2012

I booked this hotel on the basis that it sat on the outskirts of Tossa De Mar, near a pine forest, was all inclusive, the facilities looked impressive and on the whole, the reviews were pretty positive. I thought it was worth giving a try.

Bearing in mind that this is a 2 star hotel, my review is as follows:

Rooms - I booked a 1 bedroom apartment.. The room was absolutely fine, the bedroom small with only a dressing table to store anything. The wardrobes were in the living room but again, that was fine. Bathroom perfectly adequate and clean, nice balcony with table and chairs overlooking the whole complex. Two single beds pushed together (not ideal for friends but one of us slept in the living room on the sofa bed which worked pretty well). No air conditioning but we managed without.

Food - Not great but not bad either, you'll find something to eat. I got by on fish and salads but there were meat dishes, chips and food that kiddies enjoy, lots of fruit, lots of desserts, breads etc. Not much change at breakfast, the same foods every day but again, ok. Trays were topped up regularly to ensure the food was always hot but sometimes you had to wait. Drinks were supplied at a tiny bar so you could get a glass of wine or a soft drink with your meal - sometimes had to queue. The restaurant was a good size and did get really busy. Personally I hate buffets, children were messing around with the food, you had to queue at busy times, some people took the last of everything. Eating is an important part of your holiday and I would much rather order my food than go through this pantomime 3 times a day. I'm sure it works for some but not for me and I would love hotels to take note and give guests an option. It would also be great to have somewhere for adults only - It got really noisy with children screaming and running around the place.

Entertainment and Staff - This is where the hotel came into it's own. The entertainment staff were fantastic, working all day to ensure both chidren and adults were included in games and there was usually a show on each night - usually preceeded by a childrens disco which was great for all the kids who really joined in (have to say it started grating after the first few days but great for families). However, the staff were fantastic, always had a smile on their face, worked really hard to make the shows as professional as possible and tried to get everyone involved - good for you and thank you !!

Facilities - Come on owners, this place needs tidying up a bit. The pools need a good clean and tiles replacing, the rooms could do with some new furniture and a lick of paint not to mention a kettle for hot drinks (I took my own after reading reviews but this is a basic facility for an apartment), the outdoor tables could do with replacing, the whole place needs an uplift otherwise I expect that people will stop booking. I'm not the first to mention this so please take note !!!! Families expect a clean and safe environment regardless of star ratings.

Overall this is a great place for families, some go back year after year which is always a good sign. I didn't go with my family and found the hotel to be noisy, meal times chaotic, the pool areas full of children (even though we were back in term time), I couldn't find a quiet place to sit and read. I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you aren't taking children along.

There is a shuttle bus to take you into Tossa every hour - it's a nice walk though so we didn't always bother. Again, the bus fills really quickly and some guests had to stand. However, Tossa is worth it, a lovely resort. The beach is lovely, has life guards in place, the sea gets deep very quickly though - only a few feet from the shore and you're up to your neck so be careful with children. Lots of shops and restaurants which specialise in sea food - so we did manage to get a couple of tasty and peaceful meals even though we'd paid for fully inclusive, it was worth every penny. The hotel will provide a picnic box if you're going out for the day and are fully inclusive but the content was quite dissapointing - again, to be given a choice of food would have been nice.

I really wish hotels would give guests more choice but more and more hotels seem to be going for everyone getting the same options whether or not you like buffet food, want a quiet area to eat and talk or want a lively meal with your friends and family - everyone to their own. I'm sure that this works well in terms of economies but I'm also sure that if some hotels gave guests just a little bit more choice when bookings were made, they would fill up just as quickly and guests woulod have a really good holiday - goodness knows we work hard enough to pay for them..

Would I stay here again - No.

Room Tip: No matter where you're placed, you'll still get noise from either the entertainment or pool...

We arrived at the apartment having walked 2 km with 4 suitcases and a 2 year old in a pushchair from the bus terminal due to the roads being closed for a triathlon :( 2.5 hours transfer from Barcelona airport .. Now for the hotel . Very basic reminded me of my old holidays at butlins in the 70's apart from the weather . Rooms very basic and food very bland not much to choice . Could not fault the choice of drinks and snacks during the day between 10.30 and 24.00 . If you want a cheap all inclusive break you can't go wrong . If you want luxury stay away . Overall 6 out of 10 .. Tossa de mar itself is beautyfull and unspoilt and Would go back to the resort but not the San eloy not to say others may enjoy . Just trying to be honest .

We had the great idea of having a cheap all inclusive week away, the San Eloy came up as the cheapest for a week all inclusive so we looked at reviews booked. We arrived late at 1,30am and it looked lovely as we pulled up,after travelling all afternoon and evening we asked if we could get food or a drink and was told there was nothing. We checked in which was painless and went to our room. next morning we walked to have breakfast, WOW, what a different place in daylight. Broken paths, mud instead of grass in places and paint peeling everywhere with rust coming through, there was a thick black scum line round the pool with parts of the pool wall and floor missing leaving rough concrete. The food seemed ok and was hot and it varied every day so we always found something(watch out for the ants on the ceiling in the conservertory that drop on you). Drinks at the bar were ok too, they served most drinks all inclusive which was good. There is free WI-Fi in the bar area too although it is very slow and not reliable. Some staff were friendly and some just frowned at you. There is a free bus hourly into tossa town which is good and we recomend using it as it stops near a supermarket which is half price compared to the site shop. we realised after a day that this is a complex for families (as they do entertain the kids) or people who go for the free drinks. Every day you would see the same people coming back and forth from the bar with drinks from the time it opened at 10.30am till midnight. There seemed to be Kids running round as little as 2 all day and night just crying and climbing or falling off everything. In the resturant one day at lunch it seemed like a food fight had taken place with food all over the floor, but it was the remains of lunchtime feeding session by one group. The entertainment was so poor and unprofessional it would have been better replaced by a radio and use the money saved for maintenance. A chair fight broke out on the last night with a group throwing plastic patio chairs around, They were asked to leave the next day though. But this seemed the typical party attitude for the majority who stayed here though. This place is so run down it's unbelievable. You would never believe they shut down for 4 months.
Someone referred to it as a cross between Butlins in the 70's and Alcatraz.
Spot on that person!!

would we go back? Never
Recomend it? Only to people I don't like

Message to MED PLAYA, Spend some money on maintenance and you will have a half descent resort.
Now they will post the same cut and paste reply they always do. They never address any criticisms.

The room was nice and cleaned everyday (there was no air con.-this wasn't a problem for us but if we had gone away in August rather than September it might have been more of a pain). The reception was useful and informative. The hotel was more for families rather than couples but this wasn't a huge problem. The hotel is a little out of town so you get a bus for 1 euro (free if you're all inclusive). This was fine other than the fact that the last bus was at 9 and therefore if u wanted to eat out in town a little later in the evening for dinner (as most people seem to in Spain) you may miss the last bus back to the hotel.

We choose to go for a self catered room thinking it would make the holiday cheaper if we could cook a few of our own meals. However at this hotel self catered simply meant you got a fridge. No cooker or microwave or any cutlery or crockery (we had to buy some plastic knives so we could butter bread). Its a fine hotel if you're all inclusive or when you say self catered that just means you want to eat out in town but for us it was a bit of a disappointment.

Just got home after a week at San Eloy it was absolutely fantastic. We couldn't fault it. Great for families, plenty to do day and night. The complex was cleaned every day, Breakfast was worth waking up to. The staff were so friendly and helpful, 24hr reception with hotel security that was helpful and courtious. I would erge anyone to go, it was my first time as an adult abroad and i really enjoyed everything about San Eloy.
They have excursions running every day to different places and experiences. A free bus that ran everyday on the hour 5 min ride to town and picked up again.
Tossa De Mar is a great town with everything you need from food to beach.
We really recommened this hotel and Tossa peaceful relaxing and totally excellent. You must try the english restuarant in town at hollys bar you just cant beat it imported english produce its a home from home. Thanx trip advisor your advice was taken and we loved it.

A very cheap 4 night break booked via 'on the beech.com'. My wife and I went all inclusive and can safely say that by the end of the second day we had our moneys worth in food and drink! The food at the hotel was good for a 2 star, buffet foods consisting of grilled pork, chicken steaks, veggies, salads, pasta (bit sloppy) stews and of course chips. Enjoyed the fresh chesses and ham with bread rolls etc. Help yourself to what you want. May of got a little bored of it if staying any longer than a week perhaps. The beer (san Miguel) was of good quality, have stayed in 5 star hotels in Mexico in which the beer had clearly been watered down, not here..as pure as the driven snow and enjoyable when drunk responsibly. However, this perhaps is a 'double edged sword' for the san eloy as I have to say many of the pot bellied, tatooed brits staying here tended to drink all day long. This is of course is their buisness and not mine but please take note...this excess tended to lead to some rather abusive language and behaviours aimed at their offspring and members of the often rather drained looking members of staff. You can escape all of this and head to Tossa de mar, stunning quaint Spanish Town which is not commercialised at all. Well worth dipping into the sea here. We loved the town.
The apatments are great, huge and clean. All you need. No air con, hot at night but what do you expect? Open a window perhaps. Friendly maid service, if you ask for clean towels then you get clean towels etc.
This place was packed with families, kids appeared to love the pool and other amenities. Noise didn't bother us. Entertaimnet was good, bit chessy but again this is a modern day Spanish type family orientated holiday camp..don't forget..you get what you pay for.
This hotel served it's purpose for us..place to stay, good food and drink when needed and great location. 5 stars on price.

Located just a 5 min courtesy bus ride (for All Inc, otherwise 1 Euro each way) outside Tossa, San Eloy is set in a nice woodland location.
You need to be aware that the San Eloy is a very child orientated Hotel, and lots of kids are around the place. Most are good, but in a place of this size, there is always a few that spoil it for the rest.
We had a 2 bedroom ground floor appartment, which as said in other reviews, are basic but functional and clean on arrival. Now my first gripe, housekeeping…we stayed for 10 days, towels changed 3 times, bed cloths once. Appartment swept once. Some cleaning utensils are left in the bathroom, so we ended up cleaning ourselves and I did see others doing the same. By contrast a friends appartment on a different floor was cleaned through every other day, so inconsistencies exist in this department. The appartment also suffered from ants in the second bedroom, which is not a great way to wake up in the morning with ants crawling over your bed. On the plus side, the appartment was quite quiet.
The grounds of the San Eloy are spacious with plenty of Sunbeds and 3 pools and again as others have stated, are a bit tired, but are clean, safe and functional.
The bar and entertainment area are located away from the main blocks and are great for a drink and snacks and the evening entertainment. The bar staff and entertainment staff are the jewel in the San Eloys crown, they work tirelessly from 10 in the morning until midnight to give all a great service and to have a good time.
The resteraunt is located on the floor above the bar, and gives a view back over the resort, but tbh, it is to small and cramped for the amount of people here at busier times. The food area is to small and food is ferried down from the kitchen, which is located on the floor above and food is sometimes hot but mainly warm at best. The choice is varied with soup, salad and fruit every night, but also meat fish and pasta at most sittings. The standard does very from very good to awful. It's down to luck as to which you encounter. Some things I had more than one helping of, others I took one bite of and left. Some food is also warmed up from the previous day but disguised in bread crumbs or a stew, so be aware.
Overall, as long as you are aware of the pitfalls and accept them, then it's a cheap holiday and not bad value for money. Would I stay at the San Eloy again…I could do but only if nothing else at a reasonable price, was available.
