“Wonderful holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 28, 2013 via mobile

We have just returned from spending ten days at this hotel and have had a fantastic holiday. I am disabled and have a wheelchair and was aware of all previous comments regarding all the steps but once the staff showed us which lifts to use we managed to get about the hotel fine. I had emailed beforehand and asked for a particular floor and was given a beautiful room with a lovely sea view and could easily fit my wheelchair in the room. The breakfast was lovely with a big choice and all the hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful. I could not fault the hotel and even though it is an old hotel it has lots of character and the position of the hotel is unrivelled. We will be definitely be returning to this hotel in the near future.

Just got back from one week at The Vasco da Gama at Monte Gordo and I have nothing but positives. The food was lovely not a vast choice but enough, sometimes too much choice and poor quality go together, and yes the Hotel is a bit aged through time but we found this quite nice the reception and the bar areas are wood paneled and have loads of comfortable seating and a really relaxing ambiance, happy hours five until seven, the whole place is kept nice and clean no problems there, we saw a brilliant guitar vocalist and the pianist is good as well. Everything worked well in the rooms air con etc. Staff are helpful and polite, The pool area is great nice and quiet and the pool is excellent if you're a swimmer, sun beds in abundance,
The beach speaks for itself nearly white fine sand for miles no wonder the Portuguese go there for their hols, which is one reason I think why the restaurants are quite cheap, drinks and food are very reasonable, we enjoyed walking through the streets and stopping off at the various watering holes.
We would definitely return for a really relaxing time.

I had booked a twin room for myself and my daughter, and after taking our bags to 3 different rooms, we finally were given a twin room. The reception staff weren't particularly bothered about their mistake and no apology was given. However, after this shakey start, we really enjoyed our stay at Vasco Da Gama and Monte Gordo.
The rooms are quite small, but have comfortable beds and fat pillows! We stayed bed and breakfast, the breakfast had lots of choice - even my fussy daughter found things she liked! We found lots of places to eat in Monte Gordo. The hotel is right on the beach. The pool area is lovely, with a childrens pool, cafe, sunbeds and umbrellas.
This hotel really grew on us during our stay and we hope to return soon.

I spent 2 weeks in this hotel. 3 stars is exactly what they are worth of. Perfect location directly at the beach, good swimming pool but pool bar open only till 5:30 p.m. Rooms well equipped, a little bit too small but clean and comfortable bed. Wifi only near the reception and sometimes was difficult to connect. Quite good breakfests. Service generally ok. I can recommend if you look for quite good standard and perfect location.

We wanted a simple week in the sun and decided to return to the Vasco de Gama. We were there five years ago, and prior to that back in 1996. We tend not to go back to resorts we have visited in the past but we make an exception for Monte Gordo. Not surprisingly for August the resort was heaving with people and cars but the hotel managed to find a place for our hire car (just) in the hotels private car park. We paid extra for the sea view and it was well worth it. Yes the building itself is showing signs of its age - the hotel celebrated its 53rd (we think) anniversay while we there and we see another reviewer suggests the building itself was built back in 1957 when it was the only hotel in town. Some cement is uneven, there are the odd surface cracks and there will always be the need for re-painting. The hotel is right on the beach so is exposed to the elements.

Public areas are dark but this is so they can be kept cool. But they are pleasant and very comfortable.

The rooms have had a little updating since we last visited and look brighter and the bathrooms have been re-tiled.

The breakfast buffet selection was huge. We see other reviewers suggest it doesn't change and that probably true, with the exception of a few hot food items. But its only true because the range is so wide to start with. We'd rather it was like this than half the range but changed frequently.

There is a large unheated pool and a smaller one for children and plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas.

We enjoyed simple lunchtime snacks and drinks at the poolside snack bar - tasty and reasonably priced. We didn't try evening meals, the hotel's beach reastaurant or their beach sunbed concession. Bar drinks were reasonably priced and we also enjoyed their simple evening Fado entertainment - just a shame there were not more guests to hear it.

Staff throughout were helpful and pleasant.

The hotel is three star. We think it a very good one. We regularly use four star or above as a norm. No the Vasco Da Gama doesn't have Nespresso machines or trouser presses in its rooms. It doesn't have ceiling lights that create a night sky effect. There isn't wifi in each room nor is there every conceivable English speaking television channel. The hotel doesn't rely on gadgets or unnecessary facilities.

What it does offer are a perfect beachside location, comfortable rooms, adequate bathrooms, good food, fairly priced drinks and great service.

The hotel was absolutely full during our stay. Many guests are repeat ones. The staff stay at the hotel for years. Its very popular with Portugese holidaymakers.

If you are looking for a simple beachside holiday hotel we'd recommend it.

Room Tip: We are a bit reluctant to share this secret but the sea-view rooms on the top (5th) floor have huge...

Perhaps it says it all if I tell you we have been returning to this hotel for 25 years now. Often twice a year. We just love it. Good old fashioned service at it's very best, same staff for years tells it's own story. The hotel and staff are just wonderful, the restaurant is good with lovely breakfast and great staff, we book B&B as there are so many restaurants to try in Monte Gordo. Pool bar is fantastic but our favourite is the beach bar - sardines to die for as well as loads more great fish. Lamb chops, chicken and all very good too. The staff here are just teriffic and the welcome is wonderful. Every year we return we meet some of the same people, from Britain, Holland, Spain and of course Portugal who come back again and again. Lovely pool surrounded by beautiful gardens, wonderful golden beach which just goes on and on. Great rooms with very comfy beds and excellent room attendants. Everything it takes to have a wonderful, relaxing holiday. Watching the sun go down sitting on the terrace in the evening is magical - we will dream of it until we return 'ate logo'

Room Tip: So many rooms to choose from but if you don't like yours just ask to change.
