Just returned from a two-week stay & can thoroughly recommend it. The oiled, naked snake-charmer waitresses at breakfast were, to put it mildly, an eye-opener.

I was challenged by a tattooed dwarf in reception on our second night but, luckily, I got the better of him before he managed to draw his cutlass: phew...

The beggars we encountered around the centre of town were more courteous than most of the waiters in the restaurants... I had to chase one guy for my change: 10 euros ain' t a tip, Diego...

Fish... now that's food. Every kind of protein with a tail: bones that would stump a paleontologist I had to smile & gag on those sharp notes... fishcakes... MMM

Room Tip: South facing upper-floors have a great sea-view, but if you've got children, be aware that the b...

Very nice reburbished hotel. Large rooms (except the highest floor). Good beds. Booked two rooms well in advance and specifically asked both to be near, because of children. Well, we got one room at one floor and the other in the highest floor, with the same price. The front desk told us they were full and had no other rooms available! A shame because the reservation was made early. The room in the highest floor of the Alcazar is much smaller than the other one and too warm even with the A/C on. So if you go there try to avoid it, even if you get a good view to the ocean. Breakfast is very complete. For a beach hotel you can rely to be very clean all the times.
Definitely would go back, except to the rooms in highest floor, where you pay the same and received less.

Great hotel, high standard, polite and helpful staff, excellent location. Breakfast was good. Nice pool area. Clean rooms. Monte Gordo is a nice resort, quieter than the western algarve. Very reasonable prices for food and drink. Near to Spanish border. 6.50 euros for a taxi to the port and the 1.75 for the 15min ferry ride. Ayamonte is the Spanish resort - really pretty and nice tapas restaurants

Had a wonderful solo week at the Alcazar on bed and breakfast basis. Great room with massive bed, nice size balcony plus good bathroom with bath and shower. Situated on the 8th floor with fab views and next to the speedy lift. Very clean. Little fridge. No complaints at all. Breakfast was good every single day with lots of choice both hot and cold ( or both!) Two and a half mins walk from beach and 4 mins to supermarket. Staff all very helpful, especially on reception and even humoured me when I tried to ask them everything in my pidgeon Portuguese. When travelling alone, it is imperative to me that I feel safe both day and night and my things are secure when i am not around.Would recommend monte gordo and the alcazar to anyone who wants a chilled out week on the beach. Didn't use any of the facilities except the pool showers on my last day as my checkout was at 3pm but also very clean. Should have made time to use the new spa but spent everyday from 8am to 8pm on the fabulous beach. Excellent value for money too.

Room Tip: Great views from top floor!

The Hotel Alcazar - well as usual i had a little flick through all the comments on this site, ignored some and just went with my gut. The Hotel itself is lovely in my opionion, its clean, the staff are really nice, pool area is quite large, good quality sunbeds, tennis court, large grass area where you could relax, bar side bar/cafe - we had a junior suite and were pleasantly surprised in that we had a seperate double bedded room which was quite large, however small window which made a little stuffy at night, thoroughly cleaned every day as you would expect - however it was the food that let it down, even down to breakfast at times, for me it didnt matter but people were disappointed with some of the hot food on offer, we stayed half board, whilst we were at the hotel there was a large group of portuguese staying and the hotel did seem to cater for them, most of the restaurant was reserved for them each evening, we tried different times but the later you came down then most food had disappeared and the restaurant weren't that keen to put extra out, however the hotel i really liked and would go back but probably only on a B&B basis - the town itself isn't typical of some of the resorts on the algarve, its not pretty in the slightest, doesn't really have any shops if thats what you like to do, there are shops don;t get me wrong but they sell mostly cheap tourtist bits, the beaches though are outstanding and its worth going to many of the cafes on the beach and watching the world go by, you can walk for miles along the shore line. You can also get buses into Faro and various other towns on the coast - to Faro itself it is about 2 hours on the bus, we went into Tavira which takes about 40 minutues and also visited Vila Real which is 7 minutes, don;t be alarmed if you end up in the bus station it is only a minute stroll to the main square, our first trip there we ended up getting off at the market - just follow your nose down to the river and you won't go wrong. All in All a really nice holiday, the algarve for me you cannot go wrong.

Room Tip: we had room 107, it had the normal twin beds and a seperate double bedded room, take some extra coat...

I have only stayed in one hotel in Monte Gordo so cannot say if it is the best. We booked as part of a Jet2 holiday so don't know what the room rate would have been. We booked a standard room but were given one at the front 6th floor with sea views. The room was very clean and cleaned properly each day none of this show the room a damp mop. The breakfast was would you would expect in a 3* hotel in Portugal/Spain. The poolside showers and toilets were the cleanest and some of the best I have seen I think they may have been built at the same time as the Spa which has just opened. I would have no problem recommending this hotel to anyone. Staff very friendly and helpful. Did not use the bar on a night so cannot comment on it or Spa.

Room Tip: see if you can stay on upper floor at the front

Stayed here on our first visit to Portugal for one week. The rooms were very clean and spacious with very effective air conditioning. Our 5th floor room had a lovely view over the pool area and out towards the sea. The garden area was a particular favourite with comfortable hammocks in shady pine trees. There continues to be renovation work and although the spa is now open (I did not try it) the gym area was not completed for our stay. The location is good and the beautiful beach a short walk away. We opted for B&B and the breakfast was varied and plentiful with choices for all but some of the meat was of lower quality. The hotel filled up over the weekend and the breakfast room was not really big enough for the number of guests at busy times. All staff were helpful and courteous. The entertainment was popular with older guests but not our cup of tea.
