“Great hotel, good location, nice staff, go there!”
Reviewed August 22, 2009

We had a 10 day B&B stay at the Casablanca Inn. This was our first visit to Portugal and the Algarve and we had a thoroughly enjoyable time and will definitely go again.
The hotel is excellent with good air-con which we really appreciated in August to get a good night's sleep. All of the staff we dealt with were courteous and efficient; they almost all spoke perfect English (our Portugese is almost non-existent).
It really is only about 200m from a huge, popular beach with a fine selection of cafes.
Breakfast was excellent, but teh staff can get a bit overwhelmed if a large number of people all turn up at once, so service can be a little slow, but we were on holiday so didn't care.
We ate dinner in the hotel once evening and were very impressed especially for the price; three-courses for less than €10!!
In spite of several others' comments regarding the age of the guests, there was a complete mixture of ages, from "kids" to "crinklies", and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Monte Gordo isn't the prettiest place, but is well serviced and an excellent base for sight seeing. Parking in August was a complete headache.

When we stayed, the large square right at the front of the hotel was being re-modelled and that meant we didn't make too much use of the nice outdoor pool or sun bathing area due to the noise and dust. That work should be completed by end of September 2009.

One tip:- the hotel has its own area of sun beds on the beach and if you take some proof with you, you get 20% off the price of sun beds, parasols etc. This is worth doing as they're not cheap (though almost everything else in Portugal was?!).

A few minor negative points.
Have to agree with someone else's comment regarding lighting in the room. Like many hotels, the room had a profusion of small lamps with no single large light. All of these lamps had energy saving bulbs fitted and the overall light level was a little low for comfortable reading.
The hotel is not child-free and several families had children with them. All were well behaved and this didn't cause us any problem, but the travel agent we used had advertised the hotel as "adults only".

Me and my boyfriend are just back from a lovely 10 night stay at the Casablanca hotel. We are in our 20's and had a great time (so you dont have to be a pensioner to go unlike one comment said). Yes it is quiet and there are mainly older people there however what a dream it was not having screaming kids around, being able to relax around the pool allowing you to go out and about in the main streets if you wanted a bit more 'going on'. We were half board and thought the food was ok (always something nice to eat), service very fast and staff very friendly. Rooms very clean and got clean sheets and towels every day. One of the most relaxing holidays I have ever had. Oh we went to one club called cats 2 which is just round the corner from the hotel, would only recommend if you want a strip dance and or a 'lady for the night' (not the sort of club we thought it was)!!!!!! hence the reason we only stayed for one drink!

The casablanca inn is one of the friendliest hotels we have ever stayed in. Monte gordo is a beautiful place, lots to see and lots of places to visit from there. There are lquite a range of restaurants and bars and reception and bar staff we always happy to recommend somewhere to go. The receptionist saved us money by booking us on a trip up river guardiana (would highly recommend it) by booking it through her and not the travel agent that we went with. Yes as some people said there are lots of older people in the algarve but if you are after a quiet relaxing holiday then that is what you will get. The hotel breakfast was plentiful with a good choice. (we heard a few people complaining about the quality of the cooked breakfast, but who goes to portugal to have an english breakfast!!) All in all it was a great chilling holiday, with some of the friendliest and helpful staff we have met around the world, I would highly recommend the Casablanca inn and Monte Gordo.

Very dissapointed in the Casablanca Hotel, definately NOT a 4 star, we had just 3 days there in nov , food very bland & had to wait ages for it to come, one time had to wait 20 mins for the menu ! As to the room, the lighting was so poor one had a job to read & both the sink & the bath were cracked, definately needs a complete refurbishment. Most of the guests were older so would,nt recommend it for younger people or if you dont like 'bingo'! Having said all tese things, I have to add the staff were all very helpful & pleasant.

We recently returned from 10 days bed and breakfast at the Casablanca Inn.

If you are up to 65 years old and quite fit - do not stay at this hotel. It was full of very elderly pensioners, it was like staying in an "Old Folks Home".

The breakfast was OK - you can't spoil bacon & eggs. We stayed for dinner on the first evening, the fish was burnt and the veg overcooked. The pork was sliced paper thin and covered in what seemed like packet sauce.

We therefore used the Casablanca Inn as a base, spending the days in Monte Gordo and travelling to Villa Real by bus and the ferry over to a beautiful village in Spain. There is also a train station in Monte Gordo and it takes about 1 hour to get to Faro - which is very beautiful, especially the Old Town.

  • Liked — It was handy for the town and the beach and local transport.
  • Disliked — It was full of very elderly pensioners.

We are just back after spending a week in this hotel. On first impressions it is certainly not a 4 star hotel ,more a 2 star I think. We were on B and B terms, just as well as the food is not good ,the breakfast was rather bland but edible all the same. We felt the hotel was rather tired looking needing a makeover but I must add that it grew on us as the week passed. It is very central to the town and definitely nice and quiet so if you are an older traveller 40 plus it will be very good indeed. The staff on the whole are really nice ,especially the lads who were top class in their approach.A minor point is that the lighting in our twin room was almost non existent but there was a good balcony with large patio doors.Another poor point is the pool is far too small. On the whole there is a good atmospher here and for anyone wanting to base themselves in Monto Gordo it is perfect so that is my honest opinion - to summarise a good place generally where you will get your sleep but not justifying a 4 star rating.A good indication about a hotel is when guests return year after year and that appears to be the case with the Monto Gordo.

  • Liked — central location and low rise
  • Disliked — pool

We took our daughter for a quiet and relaxing week in the Sun and that's what we got and very nice it was too! But, when we arrived we were informed that our room was not ready, so we had to take a walk for a while. No offer of a cool drink, after our travels. The receptionist appeared to be not really too interested at all.
When we went up to the room, the smell of cleaning fluids was overpowering. Three of us in this room was too much. We could hardly pass each other. For the first time ever, I went to Reception and politely informed the receptionist that three adults could not live in the room. We were given another room, a little bigger although we still managed to knock our legs when passing the bedends.
Breakfast was little better. This was waiter service and he did eventually appear. Rather like Fawlty Towers at times, we felt that asking for an extra slice of toast caused a little alarm. One morning, when everything else seemed not so appealing, I asked for some Tomato on Toast. We dont do Tomatoes, I was told. They also did not do fruit of any discription nor orange or any other juice for breakfast. Instead we were offered a diluted cordial which was not good. We were glad that we hadn't stayed half board.
On a positive note, although the Hotel is dated and the plumbing is terribly noisy, it is a homely place and the location is lovely. Our stay was made more pleasant because of three members of staff, who were exceptionally nice.
Full marks to the ladies who clean the rooms and change the bedlinen. This was excellent.. Would I go to the Casablanca again, definitely no. There is much work to be done on this Hotel and the Reception Staff and breakfast staff need retraining.
