We have just returned from our 2nd Winter stay at the Casablanca Inn. First and foremost I would like to say that this hotel is cheap and cheerful and in response to other reviews you get what you pay for when holidaying in Portugal.

The hotel - Very quaint looking exterior and the interior is equally as endearing. Some may find it a little old fashioned but in our opinion it is very well maintained and adds that 'being abroad' feel to your holiday.
There are several cats wandering around the large reception area but these are owned by the hotel and have no bearing on the customer experience with regards to cleanliness etc.

The rooms - basic but has all you need, cleaned daily and fresh towels provided when needed. The downside which is purely down to the water systems in the Algarve is the yellow/dirty water that you get through the taps when first turning them on. However, if you have the patience to wait for a couple of minutes it will run perfectly clean.

The bar - Cosy little hotel bar which provides entertainment at the weekends. Although a lovely atmosphere the prices are expensive. Nearly 4 euros for a pint of lager which is double that of most other bars in Monte Gordo.

The Staff - The ladies and gentleman on reception are always very welcoming and will go out of their way to assist you. However, we were slightly upset by the behaviour of the morning cleaners. Each room is provided with a 'do not disturb' sign if you want that extra lie in. Of course this meant that the cleaners did not enter our room but we were woken every morning by them shouting and balling down the corridors constantly for around 2 hours. There was no consideration at all for any guests on our floor.

To summarise, this hotel has met most of our requirements for both stays as we do not tend to spend a lot of time at our hotel and only require it for sleep. Definitely value for money but really does depend on what you are looking for.

It has definitely improved since the last time we stayed, two years ago.
It is not four star but for what you pay it really isn't fair to complain. The food is reflected in the price. Breakfast does have a good choice of bacon, eggs, beans, hot dog sausage and there is good selection of fruit and ham and cheese. Also brown and white bread, croissants, yoghurts and cereals. There is fresh orange, pineapple juice. And tea and coffee and hot and cold milk. Surely you can make a meal out of that. Dinner is basic, but again for what you pay it is edible.
The swimming pool DOES have changing rooms and showers, newly built last year!!
The rooms are basic but they are cleaned every day.
The resort is tired, really needs updating but is a good spot to explore the eastern Algarve. The beach goes on forever, perfect for walking off breakfast.
When all said, yes the Casablanca is cheap and cheerful but I think you get more than you pay for. Where else could you get bed, breakfast, evening meal on New Year's Eve for €25 !!

We booked at this Hotel for a long weekend to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary on the recommendation of friends who have been there several times. The first disappointment was that we had booked a room with a double bed & found we´d been given a room with seperate twin beds.We asked if we could change our room but all doubles had been booked.(I´d made the booking over 1 month in advance) Our room was very clean & beds cosy but lighting was very dull & the room furnishings very old hat & tired. The second disappointment was the very cheap breakfast.Everything was very well presented but did not like the tinned fruit, cheap dry white loaf bread, watery scrambled eggs & cardboard breakfast cereals. We live in the Algarve & the bread you buy here is wonderful so why use cheap white loaf bread? Fresh fruit is also plentiful so why the tinned fruit? On a postive note the staff are lovely & very helpful, the weekend entertainment is professional Fado, nice atmosphere in the bar.(Though seating is not very comfortable.) and it is well placed to go into town or for long walks etc...
I tried the swimming pool (heated) it was cold !& it does not have changing facilities so I came & went wrapped in a towel.(no beach towels are provided so used bath towel) We will not stay there again sad to say.I´d rather pay more and get something more suitable.

Room Tip: Don´t expect to get a room with a double bed even if you ask for it.

Dear madam

After reading your comments we would like to point out that the followings remarks are not correct:

- The hotel has 55 rooms ( 49 Twins & 6 Doubles) and when reservation is made and the guest requests a double room we kindly inform that is not a guarantee only a request depending on availability
- The swimming pool is heated and the temperature is 29º degrees ( recommended) and always available for the guests to confirm
- We have changing facilities near the swimming pool and in case of doubt you can always request information at the desk relating the her location
- No enquire has made regarding the towels for the swimming pool otherwise guest woul have been informed accordingly

- The bread/food in the breakfast room is fresh every day

We apologise for any inconvenienve

Accommodation was clean and tidy, towels changed every day (eventually)It appeared also that the better rooms with divan beds were kept for the Portugese, the beds we had were wooden framed and caused a lot of bruises to the knees, we ended up padding them with blankets.
If you are allergic to cats you would have a problem, cats sleeping on the lounge benches and on two occasions we found cat doodoos in the corridor - Yuck! Incidentally I am a cat lover .)
This is a 4* hotel but goodness knows why a 3* Vasco da Gama was better in every way - we had a look there.
The lounge was dark and dingy and the seating was uncomfortable.
The bar also, but if you wanted a drink you had to press a bell which rang in the kitchen if you were lucky. Too bad if you wanted a drink at dinner times as the staff were all involved in serving.
There was entertainment on 2 nights - Fado music but the bar and lounge were too uncomfortable to sit through that.
The food however was quite good and it was waiter service, but sometimes the staff were under pressure to take orders and drink orders.
The resort itself was a bit of a dump and since most of the tourists were Dutch it looked like a mini Amsterdam!
Journey to and from Faro were uncomfortable, these transfers were at times actually sore, roads are terrible.
We will never be back! This is our 9th holiday in Portugal and the worst.

After three visits to the Casablanca Inn two of them at Christmas I would like to answer some of the negative comments posted here. Monte Gordo its self is rather quite at Christmas so many of the shops do close, but there are enough open to enable you to buy just about anything you fancy As for the hotel its self you must appreciate that staff levels don't need to be as high as in the summer months, but they still try to be as helpful and polite as possible. The breakfast consists of hot dog sausages the same streaky bacon that you get throughout the Iberian peninsula the eggs are fried in batches so they will be by definition be a little over cooked, it is not reasonable to expect the kitchen staff to fry eggs individually, there are scrambled eggs and beans also. There are also three different choices of cereals two yoghurt's three different types of bread for toasting with a selection of jams, there are also croissants a choice of meats and cheese and fruit. Surely anyone can make a substantial breakfast out of that. The plates are small for a reason, that's psychological if given a large dinner plate many people tend to over fill them thus wasting food. but you can fill your plate as many times as you like. As for dinner there are always a choice of two starters three mains (one at least of fish) and a selection of sweats, the soup is rather lukewarm but many continentals prefer it that way, if you want it warming up you only have to ask. The advantage of foreign travel should be to relish the different customs and cuisines. As for the lack of bar staff and sometimes waiting to be served as I have already said because of the time of year and the lack of guests staffing levels have to be reduced therefore the barman has to help out in the kitchen all you need is a little patience. To finish this review I would like to say that after fifty so years of travel both at home and abroad my Wife and I find this Hotel to be the kind of cheap and cheerful kind we adore. It seams to me that some British holiday makers should not be allowed to go anywhere more exotic than Torquay.

Room Tip: top floor is quieter

We have just returned from a weeks holiday at The Casablanca. I don't know where the 4 Star rating came from. Food poor, all public rooms were very cold, positively poor bar service, you had to ring a bell and sit and wait for the staff to appear, one night they had no Gin, inexcusable as supermarket was only a short walk away. Happy Hour was 12pm-2pm 15% off Whoo! We took to going a short walk away to the Vasco de Gama hotel only 3 stars but sheer luxury compared to the Casablanca. Warm, very comfortable seating and a large bar with two staff, happy hour there is 6pm-7pm 50% off. The food at the Casablanca was practically inedible, on the last night pork escalope was so overcooked you could have soled your shoes with it. Every night same soup just a different name always tasteless, we just didn't eat it. The so called indoor pool was covered in a plastic tent and looked very grubby, we didn't use it. In all the holiday was a waste of money, we booked expecting a gala night on New Years Eve but were told this only happened at Christmas, apparently Gala Night to them is a better meal than normal and that's it. If you go in the winter, though I wouldn't recommend it, take boots, fur coats and very warm indoor clothing, don't be like us looking for somewhere warm to spend the evenings.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

Dear madam

After reading you comments we would like to make the following comments:

- All rooms and public ares have air conditioning
- Regarding the bar having no Gin during the night is normal that the supermarket is near the hotel but unfortunatly is closed during the night
- The food is fresh and every day is made a different new menu
- If guest´s where informed about a New Year Gala Dinner they should complained in the Agency because we don´t have any contract or advertisement or charge regarding New Year Gala Dinner and are request to show the information /payment regarding to it

- We apologise for any incovenience

Kindest Regards
