One of the most beautiful castles in Portugal, it is well kept and you can see several ruins inside. The Torre de Menagem has a nice small "museum" with medieval weapons, and you have an amazing view from the top. also worth a visit is the "Paço Novo" with am amazing window/terrasse dominating Leiria region. You just need to be aware that it is a steep climb to get there, but definitely worth avisit.

“Haunting and Majestic”
Reviewed July 4, 2012

A short walk from town, visiting the majestic ruined Castello of Leiria was one of our favourite experiences in Portugal. Partly because it was so quiet when we visited, because there were only a few other visitors and most of the time we had the place to ourselves, and enjoyed the atmospheric towers and walkways alone. It was great fun for us visiting, as I think in the UK you wouldn’t be allowed to wander about in the ruins to the extent that you can here, and being able to get up close and have a look at the carvings etc. was great fun!

The ruined church was particularly eerie and beautiful with the delicately carved interior being exposed to the elements, and has a bleached, ghostly quality, Although not overgrown, the Castello has begun to return to nature in parts, which adds to its poignancy.

There is a small museum up the main tower which holds some interesting replicas of weaponry, and small finds discovered around the Castello. There is also a great view from on top of the tower!

There are bathrooms at the Castello, and some areas have been rebuilt – there is also a small visitors room (in which there is little else apart from the ticket seller!) at the entrance where you pay admission – very much worth it for only a few euros.

“Castelo Leiria a must when visiting Central Portugal”
Reviewed April 16, 2012

The Castle was constructed in the 12th century by order of our first King "Afonso Henriques".
During the 15th Century was transformed into a Royal Palace.
Leiria is a very pleasant city and is a must to visit the Castle that dominates Leiria's sky line.

A very nice castle! The best place to go and spend several hours looking to the city. Just a corner away from the city Soccer Stadium.
