This well managed hotel faces the fjord, offers clean rooms, a competent restaurant and excellent service. Quite expensive though. Your lodging choices ?? A couple of small pension type hotels and several B&Bs. All with good locations - the town is smaller than a postage stamp :-) All looked well kept from the exterior. Most had limited food service.

Room Tip: You definitely want a fjord facing room. A balcony is a definite plus

Well appointed hotel with good size rooms. Food is expensive and no A la Carte menu a distinct disadvantage. Although you could have one, two, or three items from the fixed no choice menu at proportionate charges there was no other facility in the hotel for lighter meals except some cakes. Perhaps we were a little early in the season in mid May but the sauna was out of action.

There aren't many accommodation options in the area, so this hotel has few competitors. The rooms are a little old-style, but the location is amazing and nothing beats the view of the Fjord from the lobby or from the dining room. The restaurant is pretty expensive so if you have other options - consider them seriously...

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the Fjord (usually required additional 100 NOK or so)

Since we were not on a fixed itinerary we had not made reservations ahead of time, but we were warmly welcomed when we arrived at the reception and with a quick swipe of the credit card we had our key in hand. The room was large and comfortable, and had a balocny with a pretty view of the harbour. The view also encomassed the station which some reviewers considered to be a downside. I disagree - the station mainly caters for the Flamsbana railway which is the little train which runs every hour to Myrdal on the Bergen Oslo line, and the trains add a picturesque quality to the view.

Since the summer peak season had still not started the restaurant had a limited fixed menu. However despite the limited selection the food was exquisite. We ate there both nights.

In summary - Although this hotel is really the only decent one in the village it does not take advantage of the fact. Yes it is pricey, as are all hotels in Norway, but the rooms are nice, the restaurant is nice, and the staff couldn't have been nicer to us.

We had a great stay at this historic hotel located only a few meters from the train station but I'll start by mentioning the exceptional level of hospitality we received: We needed to take our child to see a doctor (the nearest clinic is 9km away in Aurland) so Alex at reception not only made the appointment but also arranged for one of the staff members to drive us there and back since there were no taxis, and she also arranged for a late check out - which is usually at 11am but our boat to Bergen was scheduled to leave at 15:00 and waiting at reception with a sick child was not the best option, especially when it was so cold outside.

Our room was very clean, quiet and comfortable. Bathroom had heated floors which were a welcome bonus! Breakfast had a good selection of warm food (the staples: eggs, sausages, etc), fresh bread, cheese, cold cuts, and everything else you would expect.

We didn't have dinner at the hotel (very expensive) and ended up going to a restaurant in town which turned out to be just as expensive. If you're looking to escape Norwegian prices then your best bet is probably the cafe adjacent to this restaurant (there was another cafe in town but was closed).

My husband and I stayed two nights at the Fretheim Hotel. The location cannot be beat. Flam is a beautiful, but tiny town, nestled between the mountains and along the fjord.

Room
The room was great. After walking miles and miles each day of our trip, the bathtub was so amazing for soaking weary legs and feet. It was nice to have an actual stall where water did not spray all over the room like most hotels we stayed in in Scandinavia. Bathroom floors were heated as well. The beds were comfy and we had a nice little patio we could walk out to. It was great being able to open the door to let cool air in, because the room was a bit too hot for us. Free wifi worked well in the room. Plenty of space for storing luggage.

Food
The breakfast buffet was the best of the six hotels we stayed in. There were plenty of breads, fresh fruits, cheese (especially the locally made one, delicious), yogurt, cereals, and hot items like eggs, bacon and sausage. The second morning there were not hot items out in the buffet, but a waiter asked us if we would like the kitchen to prepare us anything. Juice and coffee was great. The views from the dining area are stunning, seeing the sunlight on the walls of the fjord, and made our breakfasts really something special.

We ate dinner at the hotel both nights we were there, and like most meals in Norway, felt it was very overpriced. The food was good, but nothing really special. The menus only contained one option for appetizer, entree, and dessert, you could order all three together for a set price or just one or two. Fortunately, they were able to accommodate us the first night by making us fish instead of pork. Dessert was very bad and not what was advertised. It was cake that was supposed to be served with raspberry sorbet but instead was just plain yogurt with what seemed like Ritz crackers crumbled on top.

Location
We loved Flam. The town is very small, but there are some cute souvenir shops nearby. There are other dining options available, the hours were a bit odd and it was hard to tell what was open, because we were there in the low season. There are plenty of activities to do around Flam in the summer, but not so much besides then. We really enoyed having a beer at the Aegir pub nearby. The hotel is just steps away from where you get off the Flamsbana train, too. Lots of hiking and walking to do as well.

We had such a lovely stay in Flam, I really hope we can go back someday, hopefully in the summer!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the fjord.

Our tour had booked us into the Fretheim at Flam. Flam doesnt have too many hotels (it actually doesnt have too many of anything - people, shops, noise, houses!) - the Fretheim is rated to be the best there.

We stayed here only for a night, but hoped we could have stayed longer. Flam, though now world-famous as a top tourist location, still retains its rustic, village charm. And the hotel & their staff embody this. People are warm, take things slow & will do what they can to make your stay unforgettable.

The hotel is right at the harbour, across the Flamsbana train station. Our room overlooked a small hillock - we had a few horses grazing right outside our window :). The hotel also has a library inside it which is worth a peak.

The only caution I have is - if you are vegetarian / have special dietary needs, pls act early in Flam. Given its a small place & options are limited, read up & go. There is a supermarket at the station where you can buy some veggies, soups, cheeses etc. There is a restaurant outside it as well where you can get some pizzas.

So, though the place costs a bomb, you wont regret paying the money given Flam will almost make you feel as if you are in heaven!
