Owner description: The world's most beautiful train journey. The train journey shows some of Norway's best landscape. In the course of approximately 2 hours, you'll experience lush fjord landscapes, steep mountains, spectacular waterfalls and snow-covered mountains. A journey you'll never forget.

This is a scenic trip which we repeated again this year, but both ways by train. Flam is small and the main thing to do is to take the train or coach trip from there. We arrived by a cruise ship and it berths very close to the town. You should book the train in advance at busy times, especially if there is a cruise ship moored. The trip does not take long and stops at quaint little halts and stations along the way. Beware of sirens who may try and beckon you into the mountains, but there again that may just be folklore or illusion. There are plenty of walks around Flam too.

We went on this trip from the cruise ship Crown Princess. It's a spectacular trip with great scenery & dozens of waterfalls. The highlight was a stop at the biggest waterfall of all. Some eerie music was the played while 2 enigmatic lady dancers appeared & disappeared at different parts of the rocks by the fall. This fall was without doubt the biggest & best we saw during our cruise. Prior to the trip, I checked out the cost of the train ride & saw that it was about half the cost of our official excursion, but was put off by a comment saying that it would be hard to get tickets on the day & they weren't easy to pre-book. Ok, the other people on the train who booked independently didn't stop at a hotel to have coffee & waffles with us, they travelled a bit further to another village. We had about an hour left after our coffee & were among hundreds of others walking about in the drizzle after checking out the gift shops. It was a memorable but somewhat costly trip, bearing in mind the ship was only a 5 minute walk from the station.

Well, this is one of those things that you will only be certain that you paid too much for it after it finishes. Unless you trust on unknown people's reviews from tripadvisor.
We spent 3 days in Sognefjord, and this was one of the things that I wanted to experience, even though I found the price too salty.
You won't see anything too different of the things you'd see driving around, but anyway, I guess for those cruising on a ship is worthed to see a waterfall from close distance and change the perspective of their trips.
The waterfall is beautiful, and the towns along the railway as well, as every other average corner in the Sognefjord. If it was half of the price I would say go for it. But at the price you pay and considering that half of the way (1 hour!) is a waste of time as you just return on the same track, I would say, well, consider your budget and the time you have available before taking this trip.
