“A fine hotel surrounded by green and quiet”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2010

My wife picked this hotel for a nice week-end in the Spa/Liege area. The hotel is in quiet area surrounded by trees from the neighbouring forest or properties (I could not tell for the neighbours of the hotel are actually a few villas with large properties around). The road is located slightly higher than Spa's city center. To reach the city you will definately need the car.

We stayed in a superior room (# 169). It was a very nice room with TV, fridge, airconditioning, big bathtub and separate shower. The shower was very big, with pierre bleue on the walls and a large shower head on the ceiling giving you that lovely waterfall effect. The room was on the backside, with view overlooking the garden. I recommend it for it was very quiet and comfortable. Breakfast is what you expect: large selection between ham/salami/cheese, cereals, yoghurt, fruits, bacon, mushrooms, sausages, potatoes, eggs. The staff can also cook you pancakes or omelette if asked.

The breakfast/dining area is in two parts: one part inside, the other one in a connected veranda. I found this last one very nice for you have more light and view on the garden. We had dinner in there one evening, a menu that was part of our booking. Nice food, good service and good wine selection with reasonable price (same or less than in a restaurant/brasserie in Spa). The staff in the evening were stagiaires from hotel/catering schools from France. They were very nice and professional. After dinner you can enjoy drinks and TV in the living area or play pool near the bar.

Facilities are good. There's open-air free parking (which is good since you cannot park in the street), tennis court. The hotel also has it's own pool, jacuzzi, hammam.

The Radisson's in SPA city center is pricier but you can get from the hotel to the spa via a short cabin ride annexed to the hotel (meaning you can leave your room just wearing your bathrobe :-). Here the spa complex is about a 2 minutes drive. The spa provides 5 hour parking for 2 hours, so if you are by car and plan to go to the spa, the Balmoral is good choice and will turn out cheaper than its city center sibling.

Finally, the reception staff was professional and friendly.

This hotel has a great restaurant, friendly and accomodating staff, and a very satisfactory wellness centre. It's great to be able to finish your evening in the pool and hamam. The bar is alright for a hotel bar, with a funny bartender.
The location is quite a bit outside of Spa, which has advantages and disadvantages, depending on what you are looking for. It's nice to be in the woods, but you need transport to get to the hotel. We arrived by train, thinking we would be able to take a taxi - but alas, none of the taxi companies picked up the phone. The hotel in the end sent a car to pick us up, which was of course nice of them.
A nice way to walk to town, actually is walking the 2 km to the Thermes de Spa, and then take the very cool cable lift down to the centre.
Our room was clean and ok. The toilet was a bit particular though, with only a semi transparant glass door closing it off from the room.

Spa, is located in the Ardennes, is a city known for the "thermes", it is a quiet small size city located in green forrest of the ardennes. At our arrival in the hotel, at 15h00, the hotel room was not ready. The reception staff offered us to go in the forrest and walk while the room was made ready, it was a rainy afternoon and we have two children, 3 and 6 years old. e still do not understand why he wante us to go in the mud under the rain. We offered to go first to the swimming pool with the children, staff told us it is forbidden to go with children before 19h00, our children normally eat at 19h00 andgo to bed at 20h00. Still we made a reservation at the restaurant for the evening meal, we hadto wait 60 minutes after ordering to receive or one and only meal, a challenge with too youngies. And the restaurant charged us full adult price for one of the children (!?). If we would have known this before going, we would have chosen another place. regardless of the brand, the epxected quality, the features of the hotel. Really not a nice experience

Had a horrible time at the Thermes de Spa, read my review. Got to the hotel and wished I had stayed there the whole time and not bothered trying to go to the Thermes.
Mishaps at the beginning: I called the night before to check all ok with the reservation, they did not have it, even though I had made it online. Could not see it anywhere! So, was stuck with having the pay for a room that was in a higher price because they no longer had the standard. I don't know why their internet reservations are not reliable, check to confirm!!
They were not willing to work with us on the price because of this mishap as it was apparently our fault for not having followed up as we did not get an e-mail... Whatever. They gave us the key, got to the room, people in our bed... got back to the reception, mistake, they checked in another couple whose name looked a lot like ours. So... we got the suite for the same price. We did not even need the suite, it was ok, but the bedroom was probably just as small, there was just a room next to it. It was pleasant. Our luck turned as someone had canceled their dinner reservations for that night (preferable to have some apparently, it gets full), we took that. Dinner was DELICIOUS. The included breakfast was fabulous too. Four Season Brunch type quality. There was a little bit of everything. Really enjoyed it.
Should have never left the hotel at all, would have been perfectly relaxing. The hamam, pool, jacuzzi and saunas were even nicer than the ones at the Thermes and you were sharing them with a lot less people. I went there at 8 am on Sunday morning, it was me and another lady. The massages looked very interesting too, too bad I had not booked one: organic tomato facial, mmm, sounds delicious, a nice treat next time I hope. Turned around our badly started weekend with the stop at the Thermes de Spa.

Nice and cosy hotel with an excellent restaurant. The room we stayed in was ok but not top. I wasn't too impressed with the staff ; they are polite but not very welcoming.

We spend one night at this hotel, celebrating our anniversary. Everything went fine on the first day, we found a surprise from the staff in our room. We had dinner at the restaurant in the hotel, really nice restaurant - good service, nice atmosphere, great food.
Location is good, in a quiet area, a bit far from the center (you need either a taxi or go by car to the center).
In the morning, we found out that there was no hot water. We wanted to call the reception, but their number wasn't mentioned anywhere in the book with info about hotel, the area around etc. (we kindly asked the reception to add the reception number in this particular room, but she didn't seem happy about this and was pretty rude). After calling the reception from an external phone, the receptionist wasn't friendly. The answer we got was: Sir you probably don't have warm water because everyone is showering at the same time. An answer that you wouldn't expect from a 4* hotel.
Breakfast was really good - but seems like the hotel lacks staff (it took us a while to find a table, ask someone to clean it, etc. A very slow process.

Besides these small incidents, the hotel is nice and some of the staff is really helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

We had four days here as a base for a trackday at Spa, and a visit to Nurburgring which is only an hour and a half away.
Room on the second floor was compact but very clean, serviced daily and was perfect.
Very modern contemporary bathroom and shower, flat screen TV and free wi-fi.

The restaurant was excellent, one of the best we have experienced, the food and service were top notch.

Nothing to complian about, and as a business traveller who averages 250 nights away a year that is a first for me!

Most of our pals stayed a few hundred meters down the road in the Dorint and it was totally dire.
Over an hour for main course one night, hour and a half on the second and many refused to pay.
Failed aircon and bad service, stay up the road in the Raddison instead.

This hotel is located 2km from the town but is not a safe walk.
Parking is free and plentiful in Spa so take the car. Th other Raddison in right in the square and may be another option for you.

An excellent hotel, and a nice town if visiting Spa Francorchamps or even the 'ring'.

Bokked with Hotels.com to save heaps over the headline rates ;)
