“hidden between the tourist trapps”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

Young chef Vincent Florizoone has al the talents of a starchef, coming from wellknown adresses such as Napoli's Don Alfonzo. Yet, he is stubborn, does his own thing and what a success. Acceptable prices for a rare combination of innovation, creativity and things the market offers. Early dune aspergues, smoked vitello tonato, northsea shrimps ....but always on your plate "the chef's way". When you spent some time at the Belgian coast, near the marina of Nieuwpoort, a stop at the inviting, charming "couleur locale" restaurant Grand Cabaret is a must.

“maybe we just picked the wrong dish”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

Recommended by a friend who is a regular customer we went to this cosy boudoir style restaurant.
The appetizer was promising, we were looking forward to what was coming next. The first course was nice but already less convincing. The main course was OK but we were looking for that little extra flavour that makes the difference and makes the signature of the cook unique.
We had a decent meal, the white house wine is nice, staff is friendly and atmosphere warm.

“Mighty lunch”
Reviewed August 1, 2012

This place is a bit hidden between the many other fish restaurants at the 'Kaai' in Nieuwpoort, and the unassuming front is not particularly inviting. The inside decor is indeed inspired by Parisian cabaret, and rather well done.
But what really matters is the food. While the menu appears to point at an italian restaurant, the chef has no intention to set up a typical italian wannabe place (not to badmouth the fine italian cooking at some good places, but many restaurants claiming to be 'italian' are really a disgrace to the italian kitchen...).
We had lunch on a weekday, starting with cipolle: stuffed onions (with a mixrure of shrimp, minced black olives and lemon) ... a feast. Next came a niece piece of cod 'Caponata' prepared with a breadcrums/pesto crust and accompanied by a ratatouille and mint sause...totally superb. Friendly service (not the 'commercial' friendliness of so many). Decent wine list and reasonable prices.
We discovered a gem and will surely return.
