We organised a surprise dinner at Sel Gris for a special family occasion. Since this was a special occasion, everything had to be perfect and we had a number of special requests that were all kindly accommodated by the maître d'hôtel. The chef welcomed us and personally explained some modifications to the menu for two persons with special dietary requests, which made us all feel immediately at home.
The decoration of the restaurant is nice and clean; modern but still warm and welcoming. Because of its location on the beach front, the restaurant has a relaxing holiday vibe to it. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
The menu - from the appetizers right to the dessert - was simply delicious. All courses were very well dressed with lots of eye for detail and with an original touch (stone plates, exceptionally tall glasses, tomato jelly in the form of a tomato which is kind of funny when you see it etc.). The cuisine is modern (with foam and liquids, difference in temperature of the different ingredients etc.), but you are able to immediately recognise what the main ingredients are. As a surplus it is possible to have a cheese tray. If you're a big eater, this is a must. The cheese is served at your table from a trolley with an enormous variety of different sorts of cheese and garnitures. If you are not a connoisseur just let the waiter surprise you, you won't be disappointed.
We took the menu with wines included and were not disappointed. The chef combined each dish with an exceptionally good and unknown wine (it is good to go off the beaten path and discover some less known wine regions).
We visited during the high season (summer) and were all able to park pretty nearby the restaurant (which is not always the case in Knokke).
Price-quality ratio is fair for a restuarant of this standing. You can keep your bill under control by taking the menu with the wine selection included.
Sel Gris is suitable for a romantic dinner, a family dinner and business lunches or dinners. A true all-rounder.
To sum up. Sel Gris is definitely worth it's Michelin Star. My guess is that they might not be far off a second Michelin Star. Compliments to the chef!
