“La reserve hotel knokke heist”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

Lovely new hotel with friendly efficient reception staff. Good position opposite knokke casino and near beach. Watch out for parking charges and breakfast charges at hotel though. Only criticism was no coffee and tea making facilities in room, had a fridge in the room with balcony overlooking the lake. Hotel was lovely and quiet and the rooms on the 4th floor were large with a fantastic bathroom and very comfortable beds, and a large flat screen tv. The spa is also very good m on the top floor with a lovely, pool, sauna etc.
Knokke heist is an upmarket resort with lovely shops, beaches and wonderful service wherever you go. You will need a fairly deep wallet if visiting, but worth every penny. You can hire bicycles to ride along the lovely promenade all the way to the nature reserve or ride the tram which travels along the Belgium coast to various towns. Would recommend.l

Room Tip: We had a room on the 4th floor with a lake view which was good and very quiet.

We stayed at La Reserve for one night after a gorgeous stay in Bruges. The hotel cannot accommodate children in rooms so we had to get our 9 year old son his own adjoining room for an extra €260 euros! Decided to blow budget for one night as thought must be the height of luxury. Rooms were nice, but not amazing. We faced the casino, and sea beyond ... but between us was a horrible stagnant green lake (at one point with a window floating in it) fenced off with some portacabins, so quite ugly considering we were paying for a "view". The reception and porterage was very efficient and friendly, but I'm afraid it just wasn't worth the cost. Knokke was nice and we had a lovely dinner at Rubens (great play area outside for kids) but I would recommend you just do a day trip from Bruges (15 mins by train) as the beautiful hotel we were staying in there cost less for 2 nights and was vastly superior.

Room Tip: Suggest back lake-facing? As front (casino/sea-facing) room view somewhat ruined by large ugly stagn...

We stayed at La Reserve a few years ago before renovations. We were looking forward to our 4 days there since they re-opened. We booked a patio room which was well appointed and pleasant. The reception was efficient. The Bistro restaurant is very good and service was excellent. The Spa/pool area is very inviting. We were surprised that a new hotel had no Fitness Centre! What we really disliked is the fact that people are allowed to smoke in the lobby. Not only cigarette smoking but cigar etc.. You could not go in and out of the hotel without that strong smell. We don't know what is the smoking regulation for common areas in Belgium but that really disappointed us. Other than that - a good stay.

We, a family if 5, stayed in a suite, one bedroom and a large living room with a sofabed. When I booked it seemed to be a little problematic how to accomodate 5 in this 4-bed suite as the hotel doesn't have any extra beds. We even brought a sleeping bag and mattress for one child, but when we arrived there was a second sofa bed in the living room. There was still plenty of space. There was a huge and well lit walk-in closet. bathroom was very nice and well equipped with both tub and shower cabin, two zinks on opposite walls, generous amount of hygiene products, even toothbrush, and slippers and bathrobes. The only problem is the lack of toilet door. It's a pity that the suites (except the most expensive one on the top floor) don't have balconies like the regular rooms do.
We didn't have too much problems figuring out the tricky lighting system, mentioned in many reviews. But it is unfortunate that in the living room, if you want to have any light on, the ceiling light has to be on. So when one child wanted to read and the other two wanted sleep, it wasn't possible to have just one small light on. Also, the light switch for the living room is by the side of the bed in the bedroom.
The swimming pool on the top floor is very nice and good sized for a hotel pool. Sauna and steam bath good too. You need to change in your room and go there in your bathrobe as there are no keys for the changing room lockers except for "our costumers" as the rather snotty lady by the spa entrance said - I suppose she meant people with appointments for massage etc.
Unlike many other reviewers, I like the look of the hotel lobby. I can see how it could be perceived as cold, but I find it very aesthetic.
The breakfast room is very undersized for such a large hotel. The first day we had to squeeze in at a table for 4 as the, very few, larger tables were occupied or reserved. The service was slow, it took a long time to get coffee and when we wanted a refill, I finally took the pot and went to the kitchen door and I still have to wait for someone to appear. The food selection is OK, but it's a very small space and very crowded by the buffet which is in a narrow corridor also used by the waiters to get to and from the kitchen.
The front desk staff were pleasant.
The location of the hotel is good, very close to the beach and lots of good restaurants around.
Two very simple improvements are needed:
1. They should get extra beds, it's ridiculous that a big hotel doesn't have any. It must happen quite frequently that families, and other groups, want to have one more person in the room. And the rooms are very big so space is not an issue.
2. They really should put up toilet doors. The way the bathroom is built, makes it very easy to do. It's just so stupid not to have them, and that little detail alone makes me hesitate to return.
A third, more complicated, improvement would be to make the breakfast room considerably larger.
In general, it is a nice hotel but I don't know if I think it's worth the price (715/night for our suite, including breakfast and parking).

There is no question that this is the best hotel in Knokke. It is the best in location, in service, in the valet, the WIFI, everything that counts. Let's say you reserve one of the largest (and expensive rooms) and before even asking, they tell you that their restaurant is full that evening. Would it not be better to send a little note in advance ? Our bathroom was very slippery, same with the wellness center (and you burn your feet in the sauna if you don't have shoes). Being a suite with a door between the 2 rooms, you would expect to have a telephone in both rooms. Well you have one in the bedroom, and one in the toilet. Working at your desk, you can use your cel phone, and that's it. Interesting also that the telephone has a multitude of buttons with individual names : room service, spa, etc.. but when you touch any of these buttons you invariably are connected to the same extremely nice recepcionnists. If you already have 2 rooms, you would expect to have independent lights. Well, no. They have installed a super technical system, whereby you can activate the lights only from the bedroom, and it switches on everything in both rooms, same when you want to switch off. So forget to read in one room if your wife sleeps in the other room. One wonders if the technician in charge has ever spent a night in a hotel. Would I go back? Of course, this is the absolute best in Knokke. And I would come equipped with 50 meters of electrical cables to divert the current from the only place not affected by the crazy lighting system: the TV screen. And I would learn during many hours how to switch the light on during the night when everyting is dark, as there is a colection of buttons next to your bed, and you better know which one to push. What was really interesting was that, upon questioning the recepcionnist in the evening about the use of the system (when I still had hopes...), she sent a person who was going to show me how to activate the light in the 2 rooms separately. After 10 minutes, he gave up. I asked him if I was the first person ever to have slept in this magnificient suite. He did not know. But I really want to go back, maybe taking 2 communicating rooms instead of my very nice suite. I love this hotel and its people, and the breakfast buffet, and the terrace near the lake, and the valet parking.

Two weeks ago we spent one night in this great hotel in Knokke. It is perfectly located at a stone's throw from the beach. Reception was most friendly and service excellent. This is a modern-style hotel located on the spot of the 'old' and very well known La Réserve Spa.
Great and spacious reception lounge. The hotel breathes comfort. Nice room with complete comfort. One little minus perhaps: the bathroom has no door, which gives a somewhat uneasy feeling.

Great breakfast area with large windows overlooking the Réserve lake.

Expensive hotel, but value for money.
