“Nice interactive exhibition, not too overloaded”

3 belle epoque villa's are converted into one museum. One living room is restored like it was during the belle epoque. There are a lot of interactive modules like sending your belle epoque e-card, smelling-module,... Nice for children!
The exhibition is not overloaded so don't expect EVERYTHING from the belle epoque but the essentials are there and you get a good idea of what is was.
Top of the bill is the rooftop terrace in gaudi-style. Very nice to sit there and enjoy the views. Not so nice when it is windy or raining...a pitty you can't sit there and drink something, no drinks for sale there...

The best site by far in Blankenberge (but a bit harder to spot than the pier) is the charming Belle Epoque Centre, built in a series of restored late 19th/early 20th century villas near the centre of the town at Elisabethstraat 24. The Belle Epoque Centre covers the history of the town from about 1870 to the outbreak of war in 1914 as it prospered and grew into a national and international resort. It does it beautifully with period rooms, costumes, sound installations, posters, prints, postcards, cinema and photographs - and a really quite “veut le voyage” roof terrace. You will get a feel for the wealthy and the less well off, both the local residents of a former fishing town turned resort and those whose lot it was to serve the tide of grand visitors in the villas, hotels and attractions. If you like art nouveau/judgenstil design and furnishing you will like this location. In the basement is an intriguing exhibition about how the premises were rescued and converted to the very appealing museum it is today. For only €3 (€1.50 for <26 and >55) it really is a remarkable cultural bargain and should be more widely known. It is worth a detour to make a visit. Plan on spending a couple of hours to take in what Blankenberge was like in the now vanished “belle époque”.
