“Great location, but in need of renovation”
Reviewed May 29, 2014

At the outset, I didn't stay in this hotel, but simply dropped in for morning coffee last week while in Redcastle village. It has breathtaking views of Lough Foyle and county Derry in the distance, but it could do with a facelift inside and out.

The external paintwork overlooking Lough Foyle obviously gets a hammering from the salt air, but this is all the more reason to paint regularly - something that isn't been done now.

I note too that a couple of reviewers mentioned the dark interior. This is an 'Irish' phenomenon and can be seen in many hotels, particularly across Ulster.

Staff were very nice and it really has the potential to be a top-class hotel, drawing people to one of the most picturesque parts of Ireland.

Room Tip: Look for a room facing Lough Foyle. Ask in advance if there's a wedding party booked for the sam...

Dear Guest

Many thanks for taking the time to send us your comments. As you have stated the exterior does get a hammering due to our proximity to the water, but we do try to keep on top of this we are also upgrading many of our rooms and are continuously refreshing the interior.

I do hope you will get the oppertunity to experience our rooms, spa and leisure facilities for yourself some time soon.

My wife and I stayed on a 2 night package on a b&b basis with dinner included for 1 night. We booked a suite but we're very disappointed with it. The room was dull and dowdy with old fashioned well worn furniture. The whole place could do with a facelift. The outlook from the room was very poor overlooking a road , surely when paying for a suite it could at least have a lough view. The evening dinner was good and breakfast average. The hotel has a large swimming pool but it's not very warm and the so called jacuzzi is very poor. The hotel needs extensive modernisation and updating. Doubt if I would stay here again or recommend it to friends.

We had a fabulous time here at the start of last week. We actually got engaged on the Tuesday at the harbour in Greencastle and celebrated with the most amazing dinner with cocktails in the Redcastle restaurant. The food was impeccable from beginning to end. The barfood is also very nice. We had gone for one of their 2 night package deals and thought it was very good quality for the money. The staff were all lovely and friendly doing what they could for us. The spa was also lovely and the hotel was very clean. Stunning ocean views made it so amazing.
It is also only about 5 minutes from the little town Moville, approx 10 minutes or so from the picturesque Greencastle where the ferry to Magilligan in Northern Ireland carries cars and passengers back and forth. Great place to stay if you are sightseeing around these parts.
Love Redcastle hotel. It is quite special to us now.

Room Tip: Go for the oceanview rooms. We stayed before in the 2 bedroom suite which was lovely with a river vi...

Stayed with a group of friends in April 2014. Busy hotel with professional and oh so friendly staff - the service was fantastic - especially Gerry (the porter) who met us on arrival and took our luggage whilst giving us a short tour of the hotel. Food was amazing and location superb on the beach. Great weekend and I have already booked to return.......... Only downside - the toilet roll certainly wasn't Andrex or even luxury and coffee at breakfast tasted of ash - other than that all was fab :-) Thank you for an amazing weekend

Just returned from the Recastle after a visit over the weekend, lovely hotel in the most beautiful surroundings.
Our room was very spacious and spotlessly clean only negative is that it was a bit too warm.
We also had treatments in the spa which were fantastic. I had a facial, most enjoyable and relaxing.
We also had a meal in the hotel's restaurant, the food and wine were fist class but don't go too hungry as portions are quite small. Service in the restaurant was just ok, nothing to warrent a complaint but just wouldn't rate it as good as everything else.
Overall a very good experience.

From my title you would think this was a fabulous hotel..and it definitely was in many ways.
When we arrived, it was around 4pm on a saturday and the hotel was heaving with people. There was a wedding on and there were just so many people - everywhere.
Hotel Reception is very small, and dark - but staff were very attentive and helped us with our luggage and got our room straight away.
The room was nice, good size, nice comfy bed - with a fab view over the bay.
We had dinner in the restaurant as part of our stay - and the food was great. Service was also very good.
Upon retiring to our room (at 1am) the noise coming from the wedding was unreal. The function room was on the lower ground floor but opened out to a smoking area - so the doors remained open - until 3.30am - when the wedding was over - right under the bedrooms. Then the door banging and corridor noise started. I was very tired and just a little bit hungover the next day.
Breakfast was plentiful - although the queue for the hot food was about 40 people deep - it did move quickly enough though. Staff definitely seemed a bit harrassed but they were still very pleasant and helpful. After breakfast we travelled, saw lots of the surrounding area and it really is beautiful - being from Ireland, i'm ashamed that i haven't been to this area before.
We arrived back to the hotel again about 4pm and again the horel was packed with people. I couldn't understand - i knew it couldn't be a wedding as it's Ireland. I didn't mind either way as i thought it would be over early meaning a good nights sleep. I'm still not sure what the function was but they function room once again was in use and once again the noise was ridiculous - until 1.30am.
I am a young person and all for a party - but when you go for a relaxing weekend - you do expect to be able to relax and...sleep. I understand also that Hotels get a large part of their income from functions and that is fine too - but they should make sure this does not disturb other guests.
It really was such a shame that the noise impacted my entire weelkend and for that reason, i wouldn't return - but i do have to give credit to the excellent food, great staff and wonderful surrounding area.

my wife and I stayed 2 nights, first class from start to finish, super hotel, brilliant location, staff so friendly has to be up there as one of the best hotels that we have stayed in. Breakfast was superb as was the evening dinners. Right by the edge of the water, when sitting in the dinning room having breakfast you would think you were on a cruise ship as you look out over the water.
We would definitely go back and would highly recommend to others.

Room Tip: would book a room with a sea view
