“Not great”
Reviewed August 22, 2008

Reception and welcome was poor. Confusing directions to room. We were told to go down through the bar and take an elavator so we pulled our bags down steps at the end of the bar but there was no sign for an elavator. Had to go back to reception and ask again. Eventually a helpful waiter brought us to the room but it was via a different elevator behind reception. Direction signs to rooms need to be improved. The room was nice with a nice view. One thing I would say is that the floor boards creaked in the room overhead which was annoying. The TV was not good and the reception of channels and the remote weren't good. The Bar food was not good - just about passable. The desserts were way over-priced. Didn't try the restaurant for evening meal. The breakfast on both days was good. The pool area is nice and has a great view out to the lake. This place needs to improve if it is to deserve 4 stars. Reception staff were nice when we were checking out but they could have greeted us and welcomed us better. Some staff very good others not so.

we stayed here for a weekend break to celebrate my birthday. our room was nice, although the tv reception was very poor. we went to the bar to have some food and a drink and I have to say that it was one of the worst hotel bars i have every been in. the food was all clearly pre-frozen which I wouldn't expect in a 4 star hotel. we then had dinner in the restaurant which again wasn't of 4 star standard, our irish coffees had been topped off with off cream and they then charged us for them when we were leaving! the views are great and the spa treatments are great, but i wouldn't recommend people to stay there for the price. over rated.

We arrived at the hotel at check-in time (3.00pm) to join a queue of people all checking in at the same time. There was only one girl on reception who seemed to be fairly inexperienced and we were a bit concerned when we heard her tell a couple booking in that they were 'in luck' because their room was ready.

No such luck for us or the family in front of us who had 2 small children with them!!! We were told to take a seat until our room was ready. The girl then made a few phonecalls unsuccessfully trying to locate housekeeping. We were kept waiting for an hour, every so often asking again when it would be ready, and being continually fobbed off. Eventually another man (who was there with his wife and kids, still waiting) asked for a coffee/juice - which was very reluctantly supplied. We also asked to speak to a manager but 'they were all in a meeting'. Ridiculous for a 4-star hotel. Eventually we checked in an hour and a half later (the family were still waiting!).

Room was quite spacious with a nice view - fairly clean, although bedding was cheap and worn, and I did discover a stain on an overblanket which was white and sticky(!), and had dried in. Pool was pleasant, though needed work here and there - a lot of small children in the spa pool, which given the depth wasn't really suitable for them, though no real facilities for youngsters bar a very small pool in the corner. No lifeguard either which was a bit surprising.

The restaurant was overpriced - food average, deserts were not fresh, had all the hallmarks of being frozen and defrosted. Breakfast plentiful, though cooked breakfast was somewhat greasy and not as hot as it could have been. Sums up the whole experience really. Extremely bad value for money all round, would not rush back or recommend it.

We had a great family stay here with a suite consisting of 2 rooms and a shared living area.

The restaurant was superb for dinner, French theme at the time we stayed, great menu and superbly cooked, even the Pigeon!

Very good facilities at the Redcastle, pool, spa facilities and also golf if you are into that.

I don't think I could fault the hotel but you need to go for one of the deal packages they often do to get really good value.

For anyone travelling from UK / NI I would recommend you go via Magiligan in NI on the ferry to Greencastle in RoI, get's you very close to the hotel.

Stayed in the Redcastle for one night with my sister, for a treat. The hotel was lovely, although our room was a little run down. Paint was pealing from part of the wall, the room smelt strongly of cigarette smoke and the shower door was faulty. However, the spa itself made up for what the hotel was lacking. Their treatments are lovely and we spent a great afternoon in it. The hotel restaurant was great and the food was very tastey. We stayed during the school holidays and breakfast was a little manic with lots of children everywhere. All in all, the hotel is lovely but could be spruced up a little.

Myself and my wife went for a short break to Redcastle with our one year old daughter. I have to say it is a gem worth visiting. The staff were extremely friendly and even during a busy breakfast staff took time out to ensure that we were ok and if we required any additional items for the child. The rooms are well adapted for families.
The location and scenery is fantastic but the friendliness of the staff made our stay.
We will definitely be back and would highly recommend this gem of a hotel.

we got a great price on a 2 night stay including dinner and while the hotel, rooms and staff were great we had one of the worst meals we had ever been served. some food was burned while the dessert was still frozen. a number of other guests we spoke to had similar experiences with frozen prawns and cheesecake being among the top offenders. at 39 euros per person for dinner with several supplements of up to 10 euros each in addition we had expected great food. the only recompense we were offered was the removal of supplement charges. needless to say the experience spoiled our break and left us searching the local area for alternatives on our second night.
