We had a very enjoyable two night stay at The Crown, staying with friends. The bedroom was a reasonable size, smartly decorated with bold wallpaper and curtains, and very nicely furnished. The room was well equipped - a wall mounted flat screen TV, coffee and tea facilities, etc, and a comfortable double bed. The bathroom had a double size shower unit, and was finished with formal large grey tiles and upmarket fixtures.
Downstairs, there is a large stylish restaurant area and we had a cooked-to-order full English breakfast. The scrambled eggs were particularly yummy. We had an evening meal too - the menu choices were good value and the food was delicious.
The location is beautiful. There is a garden with stream just outside the Inn, and the views from the village were perfect as we had clear, bright, sunny Spring weather.
Our bedroom was not serviced on the middle day of our stay, but we were given enough fluffy towels to see us through.

You never quite know what to expect when you visit a new hotel. Pat and I were delighted to attend the re-launch of The Crown at sleepy High Newton. Graham and Amanda Kennedy transformed the boarded-up relic into a boutique hotel without losing its village pub charm.
A major overhaul has produced seven luxury bedrooms, stylishly furnished with modern facilities such as wall mounted TVs and rain showers. They are welcoming and vary in size and price.
New chef Crawford Campbell designed two menus. The pub has traditional classics such as steak and ale pie and haddock and chips. But the restaurant is where The Crown plans to achieve status as a leading fine dining experience in the Lake District.
Crawford: “We’re keeping a relaxing atmosphere in the restaurant which works with our clientele but we are introducing high cuisine. The menu changes regularly to include seasonal items such as pheasant, venison and haggis. I’m also using flavours that people may not be familiar with. I want to turn The Crown into a place that everyone talks about and wants to visit.”
Pat and I were offered tasters of these dishes and what treats they were: Arbroath Smokey Fishcakes, Norwegian Haddock, Cartmel Venison, Gressingham Duck, Sea Bass, Lamb Shank, Risotto and more. (I was astonished to find my all-time, favourite soup Cullen Skink – a Scottish delight no doubt perfected during Crawford’s time at a Michelin-starred-Gleneagles restaurant.)
New manager Lesley Butler gave us an accommodation tour (don’t you just love peeking into other people’s bedrooms) and we dearly wished we were staying the night.
High Newton has been bypassed so The Crown is quiet away from the traffic. It has origins as a 17th century coaching house. Behind is Cartmel Fell with spectacular views - an ideal place to walk off a few calories.
The Crown retains a country pub feel with flag floors, roaring log fires and oak beams. There is even Henry – the resident ghost! He prefers a particular chair but the new owners don't know which one so be careful not to sit on his knee. The locals round the evening bar can tell you spooky stories of Henry roaming the Inn. The bar stocks local real ales from Hawkshead and Coniston breweries. There are lagers, spirits and a superb collection of wines and juices.
Windermere and Furness are a few minutes away. Also close by is Victorian seaside resort Grange Over Sands, Historic Ulverston and Cartmel Village, famous for its racecourse.
So if it’s a lovely Lakeland village you’re after then this is for you. And don’t be surprised if your expectations turn out to be greater than you thought they would be. Ours were!

Called in previously to taste the great beers and pub food, we wanted to stay and enjoy the restaurant and newly refurbished rooms.
Not disappointed. Bar still amazing, 5 draft beers to work through. Room fantastic. New modern decor, personally selected and laid out by the new young owner. Quality of product is evident here. Room size reduced to give an amazing bathroom. Good thinking.
Pub quiz with the locals was a great bit of warm friendly fun. Kids very welcome. Restaurant food was amazing. Quality eating. I always believe in you get what you pay for and The Crown is not the cheapest but you get a quality experience from the guys there in a warming home from home, close to all the Lakeland places you want to explore.
We will definitely be back to spoil ourselves again.

I stayed at the Crown at High Newton last december and straight away the staff made me and my husband feel extremely welcome, the pub was nice and friendly and we got chatting to the locals, there were quiz nights on in the pub and the scenic view was amazing.

The rooms were decorated to a high standard and were regurarly cleaned, and the beds were very comfortable to sleep in.

Im leaving the best to last though, I have to say the food was outstanding, the chef there was clearly talented and the menu was a la carte, every meal was exceptional and the chef had obviously put a lot of effort into making his menu outstanding.
overall the place was amazing and me and my husband will be returning.

I can only say it is good to see a pub with such high standards in all departments. We arrived around 4:30pm to find the bar in full swing with the Local Shoot. We were shown to our room which was was immaculate and returned to the Bar for a pre dinner drink mixing with Locals and fellow guests alike, great crack. The meal was fantastic as were the staff. We will definitely be returning.

From the drive up to the lakes to the fresh orange juice the next day. Me and my partner couldn't complain about a single thing, the warm friendly staff and regulars, made us feel so welcome all the time we stayed, the rooms were beautifully decorated and warm, we weren't disturbed in the night as the location is so peacefully placed and the cooked breakfast was to die for! We will definitely be going back and recommend the crown to anybody that is lookin for a romantic getaway! We would like to say thankyou too all the staff for an amazing stay :D
