“Pleasant enough but could have been better”
Reviewed October 7, 2013

Just like some of the other reviews we found the accommodation block around the courtyard very dated. The room was clean, very warm but so dark. I don't think they would pass building regulations today with regard to the size of the windows. The outside garden areas need some radical work. I cannot name staff but some were excellent and others need some more training. We stayed 3 nights and on each night they had a wedding function so maybe they were stretched. The restaurant area in the conservatory appeared quite pleasant. On the first night we were shown to our table but I could not sit down as spare chairs were stacked against my chair due to another table having swapped chairs for baby chairs. The waitress should have noticed this issue. The next night we had a different table. If you want a romantic meal in candlelight with no other lighting and you need to use your mobile phone as a torch to illuminate the menu then ask for table 18!
There seemed to be confusion about the breakfasts as they had menus on the table but on two of our days they had a buffet running. The last dinner was spoilt by nobody asking want we would like after the main meal. We wanted desert and coffee but having waited 20 minutes we walked out in disgust. The final breakfast was also spoilt by the waitress asking whether she had taken our order - she hadn't! There was certainly a lack of training and things must be improved by management. Also - get those mats cleaned in the restaurant and table 27 was horribly sticky to the touch.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us at the Cedars. As the weather has turned, some of the areas of garden have sprung up very fast and I would like to assure you that Mark (Gardener) is working none stop to make the grounds look good.
My team would also like to thank your for your comments, as these assist in making improvements.

I would like to thank you for your review on your stay at the Cedars Inn Barnstaple. I am very pleased to see you enjoyed your food and as I would expect your room was clean and value for money. We have already started clearing the grounds, to allow more light in to the rooms, we have also changed light bulbs in several lights to give more light. We have a resident gardener and we works none stop to ensure the grounds are kept well, but as you can imagine this is an on going job.
Kind regards

The Cedars Inn is a little down-at-the-heels. The signs imply new management, but they have a ways to go in improving the place. It's a great location and the restaurant, pub, terrace and grounds are quite nice. The overall shape of the courtyard rooms leaves a lot to be desired. They are dingy, dark, and - as one of the earlier posters put it - tatty. We specifically asked for a second floor room, having read that the noise from above if you're on the ground floor can be excessive. We ended up on the ground floor, and when the chap above us checked in, it sounded like he was coming right through the ceiling. Mind, he wasn't doing anything but walking around and unpacking - and using the bathroom - but every sound came through loud and clear. If it had been two people, or children, or a party, I don't think we could have slept.

We were quoted one rate - GBP 65/night - when I reserved on the phone. When we arrived, we were told the rate was GBP 80/night. I thought we had sorted it out, but upon check-out, they still tried to charge the higher rate, so we had to negotiate all over again. I don't think we would ever stay here again.

Room Tip: As mentioned, the rooms in the courtyard ground floor are subject to noise from above.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us at the Cedars. As the new Manager - I am constantly making improvements to the service, standards and the grounds. The Cedars is in a fantastic location, with a very good team and our aim is to give every guest a fantastic time. With refference to the accomodation, I am unable to change the buildings or the layout and have to work with what I have. To reduce noise, we locate all our family rooms on the ground floor, keep groups together and fill the upper floors last. I value your feedback as this assists in making ongoing improvements and I do hope we will see you again. Peter Elder General Manager.

The hotel is in pleasant grounds and is convenient for Barnstaple and surrounding area. It looks as if some effort has been made to tidy the grounds recently, but more is needed. First thing you see from car park is a tatty net curtain upstairs on the main building. The rooms are in separate building so not relevant, just gives a bad impression. The rooms are fine, although the sound-proofing is poor between rooms and especially between en-suite and room. The toilet did not flush well and was noisy. The velux window needs a better blind to keep out the light. Staff are friendly but a bit laid-back. The breakfast was fair. Eggs Benedict was soggy as the eggs had not been drained properly, and the sauce was insipid.

Room Tip: Room with normal window (not velux)

Thank you for taking the time to give your review on your stay with us at Cedars. Yes some of the grounds have been neglected over time, as the new Manager I have started workes on making improvements - cutting back hedges, lighting etc etc, this is a major task and will be on going. I am also in progress of work on bedrooms, including lighting, painting and changing items like blinds as required, again this will be ongoing. Thank you again and we all look forward to seeing you again. Peter Elder General Manager

A very good experience right from the superbly efficient booking staff at central reservations to the very professional welcome at the hotel. Well situated in a most attractive setting this lovely hotel offers very comfortable accommodation in reasonable sized rooms with all you need in terms of extras like pleasant soap in the bathroom to biscuits with the complimentary tea and coffee etc. The food was well prepared from a fairly comprehensive menu, that included some vegetarian options, by staff that appear well trained if a little aloof. Well managed hotel with a welcome that was helpful and proficient. Our second visit here and we look forward to an opportunity to stay again soon.

There was 11 of us staying as a group of golfers, we all checked in on the saturday morning and was allowed to put our cases in our rooms even though they were not ready, this was great as it got that job out of the way and allowed us time to get ready for our afternoon round, we came back after golf and the shower in our room was excellent and lovely fresh towels, we all ordered food in the evening which was very nice, throughout the week though a couple of the guys said that their food wasn't that hot but did not wish to complain as the staff were so busy and they were hungry. Breakfasts were very nice also so all in all the food was good. The only gripe we really has was that at night we were asked to drink up at 11pm as the bar was closing, we challenged this as we thought that residents would get drinks for as long as they wanted but aparently because this wasnt't a hotel but was a lodge the rules do not apply. This didn't spoil the break but would have been nice to have been advised of this before booking, not that we are beer monsters or anything but we do like a night cap and general chat around 11.30pm onwards.
The grounds look a little run down which i guess is down to lack of staffing, this place could look really nice, it is certainly a busy Inn and the staff are brilliant, one young lady in particular whose name escapes me was always on the go. I would certainly stay there again, the price is good and that's why i would say it was GOOD and not AVERAGE. there is always lots going on, they had 3 weddings whilst we were there in one week so it must be good. Definately a place to stay but beware if you need to get anywhere between 8 and 9am, the traffic is so busy on the road outside the Inn.

Room Tip: We stayed in the courtyard area which is very quiet and away from the Inn, so if you need peace stay...

I would like to personaly thank you for choosing to stay with us at cedars. We strive to achieve the best and welcome any feedback,as this assists in making it even better. I would always like to know if a guest has any issues, as we can then rectify. I will always look at keeping the bar open for longer if requested in advance, as without notice it is always hard to expect team to stay on longer as they are due back early in the morning. We look forward to seeing you again in the near future. Peter Elder General Manager
