Having found Scotney Castle shut after an hours drive due to the imminent storm, we turned our attention to finding somewhere for lunch in the local area. Tripadvisor reviews rated the Black Horse in Pembury so we headed straight there. Parking the car in a road opposite, we arrived.

At 13:00 on a Sunday with no booking, we expect good places to be busy, which this was. However, we were greeted very kindly, and pretty much straight away. A couple of checks on tables and within minutes we had a table for three next to the carvery through the back, having been looked after by at least 3 staff including what I think was probably the owner.

What a feast came to us.

Carvery lunch plus dessert for £16.50. Huge range of veg, meats galore and a very friendly atmosphere - well created by the staff, who were by no means your typical Sunday / holiday / weekend draft ins.

Thank you Black Horse for a quality Sunday lunch. We have told others of our experience and will will be back.

Michael

We chose the Black Horse in Pembury for my Hen night dinner due to it's reviews and proximity to our hotel, and I couldn't be happier with that decision!
I was slightly nervous taking 14 city girls to a pub in the country that I'd never been to before... however the food, drink selection, and hospitality was absolutely fantastic. We sampled a wide range of dishes between us, and there were only compliments from the group - the steaks in particular were delicious and huge! We had one vegetarian and one gluten free girl in the group and the staff went out of their way to check the suitability of the dishes and offer alternatives where possible.
The pub has a lovely atmosphere, both in the restaurant and bar. We were quite a rowdy group, but at no point did we feel an inconvenience.
Finally, the landlord, Gary, is possibly one of the loveliest men I have ever met - he was accommodating, hilarious and entirely accepting of us taking over his bar! Thank you Gary!
I cannot recommend this pub highly enough.

We love the Black Horse - a great pub for a drink, lunch, dinner, whatever the occasion. However lately every visit - whether that has been for a drink on a Friday night or a weekend lunch - has been somewhat spoilt by a constant background noise of young babies and children being noisy.

We are not for one minute suggesting that families with young children should not visit pubs, nor that they should be banned from pubs like smoking (now that's wishful thinking - ha ha!). But when we go to the pub we have a certain expectation of a pleasant atmosphere that does not include babies and toddlers screaming, crying and shouting. Unfortunately every visit to the Black Horse recently has had a constant background noise of children screaming, crying and shouting. Sorry mums and dads - but it's very annoying when you have come out to enjoy a drink and/or a meal in your local pub!

Amusingly we observed some of the locals started wailing like babies on one occasion to mimic the noise of a crying newborn that a couple had brought to the pub - presumably a polite, pub way of saying - please make the baby stop crying we are trying to enjoy our pints at the bar.

The point here is not to have a go at families in pubs and restaurants - I know from personal experience that some children are delightful company and perfectly well-behaved and there is no reason we should impose some blanket ban on their presence. But recently there seem to be too many parents visiting the Black Horse with noisy and poorly-behaved children that are spoiling other people's enjoyment.

A tricky one, because how do you control parents (for it is them not the children who need to set boundaries here) - fundamentally it's a great place and most people who go there are good to be around. But maybe something the Black Horse needs to consider before regulars and high spenders are put off by the small minority of people who turn up once in a blue moon with babies and buggies in tow, stay for an hour, and maybe stop good customers from returning. At the same time it's a great place for family outings, for example the Sunday carvery attracts a good crowd.

Otherwise a great little pub! Once the noisy children leave..... that's why I only give 3/5 on this occasion, and not the 5/5 I always used to give.
