“Wasted Property”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 28, 2012

What a colossus waste of an amazing property. Had booked a Suite for 2 nights through email. The replies were slow & painful & it took a lot of phone calls to finally get the confirmation. The hotel is located just ahead of the Chakrata taxi stand & forks off from the main road by way of an unmettalled road passing through dense forest. First look at the property & you are bound to fall in love with it. A beautiful heritage building spread out along the ridge surrounded by Deodars, it seems like an idyllic place. The kitchen is the first to come, followed by the reception which also serves as a convinience store & immediately follow the Suites. I was allotted the Suite no 1, just next to the reception. I was not very comfortable with the location of the room but the hotel was all full & so there was no option.
Room:
The Suite comprises of 2 rooms & 1 bathroom. The rooms are spacious & huge & are sparsely furnished. Both the rooms have huge bed in it & in addition the outer room has a seating space & a TV with DTH connection. The rooms had tiled flooring & appeared clean to begin with. The bed sheets & the towels though were stained. The mattress & the pillows were old & tacky & quite uncomfortable. The TV set broken & it was quite an achievement to get it started or change the channel.
Bathroom:
The bathroom was downright ugly. It got wet very quickly & had a lot of spiders around. The taps were leaking, the water pressure extremely less. Water is a bit of a problem in the hotel & the wash basin & the flush were always dry. Very difficult to manage with a bucket & a mug. The geyser too was not working & we were told that hot water is supplied through solar panels. The 3 days that we were there, it was cloudy & so there was no hot water at all. Though the same was provided in a bucket.
Food:
Sometimes good & sometimes inedible. The food quality was very unpredictable. While the lunch on the first day was very good, it was inedible the second day. The dal, roti, rice everything was stale. The attitude of the owners too was very very complacent as they know that there is no other option in Chakrata.
Service:
No complaint on this front. The service guys went about their work in a mundane way but provided whatever was asked for.
Other negatives:
1) there are a lot of flies all around & the only reason for this could be the garbage that is not disposed off properly. The area around the hotel is strewn with wastes.
2) The hotel is full almost all the time & so the meals are gonna take a lot of time to come.
3) Chakrata in general & this hotel in particular has a tendency to attract a number of guys only group & so you have to get accustomed to them drinking in the open, shouting expletives at the top of their voice.

Room Tip: I would personally prefer the rooms in the modern wing.

I went with my husband & his 2 bachelor friends. It was my first snow.
Of cousre the place is not "metropolitan" or "feature-packed"! In fact, it is wrong of a tourist to expect urban facilities in such secluded places - did you miss the low connectivity & high cost of transport on the way reaching there?
That said, bad heating facilities & stained bedsheets are truly turn-offs.
We had the last room-set on the cliff side. View was great!
A larger group of guys was already staying there, & they had lit a bonfire.
Staff lit fireplaces in the rooms (for a charge), but you have to sit really close, & once they burnt OFF, we felt really miserable! :D
Sunrise was an experience. I like old rooms with high, tiled or wooden roofs. I love bay windows & French windows.
Bathroom was usably clean, water supply was continuous.
But I din't have the guts to bathe in that weather.
Food was quite good. Nothing too sophisticated, but very palatable daal-chawal, parathaa-butter.

Room Tip: Take a room with a direct window to the East.

The hotel is very well located, being a mere 1.5 km from Chakrata Market. It had spacious rooms and that is all it can boast of. The rooms were not well kept. The linen was downright dirty !! And the place desperately needs to change it's chef, if it has one ! The standard of food was very poor. overall a disappointing experience.

Chakrata is an unexplored space controlled by the army. You would not find many options available here. Hotel snow view is the best options which you can find out in chakrata. We book a family room which was decent. Although not very clean but worth as the rent here is not very high. They arranged bonfire for us in the night. Food was good. Seemed like home cooked food. Since it was too cold there they also arranged chimney fire in the room. View from here is spectacular. Overall it can be termed as a good option.

First of all a caveat. This review is not meant for foreigners for the simple reason that they are not allowed beyond Kalsi. Chakrata is an army training area, 90 km. from Dehra Dun, hence there are restrictions on development which is good as we see Nature in all its splendour. There are very few hotels and the best is this hotel which is slightly more than a kilometer from the bus stand. Looking to the 2 reviews before me, I really wonder whether it was really that bad during their stay or the hotel has improved since. My stay was quite comfortable and I got what I thought was the best possible room (No. 17) which had a private side balcony and is in the relatively newer wing which is located at the sunrise point. I could actually see the sunrise from my bed which is simply too good to be true. The food was good and though they do not have a separate dining room, the service was prompt and courteous. The overall cleanliness was good incl. the bedsheets. Maybe I had gone in off season though it was a weekend (March 16 to 18 - 3 nights) when it was nearly full for the first 2 nights. The only issue was that there was no running hot water because some of the solar heater panels had been broken by the monkeys. Hence, one had to inform in advance which the staff had to bring in buckets from the main wing. A minor inconvenience. The location was excellent and if a person loves solitude, Nature, there can be no better place than this. He can go for long walks, read books, etc. On the day when I was to leave in the morning, one of the owners was very kind to drop me in his car at the bus stand where I was to catch a jeep (seat-sharing) for Dehra Dun. All in all a wonderful experience.

Room Tip: Take rooms in the newer wing (nos. 15 to 20) which is also the sunrise point.

One has to be very clear about what one is looking for before going to this Hotel. If you are looking for a hotel only with a view - this is it. However, if you want any of the urban metropolitan features, this hotel will fall short of your expectation by a mile and a half.

The rooms are spacious but poorly maintained. The furniture are old fashioned - clumsy and badly in need of a round of refurbishing. The bathroom is "strictly" ok - though was often invaded by slugs, spiders and frogs. The bed sheets had multi-colour stains - seemed people had tried to have dinner on bed and had left their fond remembrances all over the bed sheets. There is no restaurant in this hotel - so you are forced to eat in the room, which probably accounts for the stained bed sheets.

Only positive point about this hotel (apart from the view) is the dinner - which was excellent. Have seldom tasted better chicken curry in my lifetime.

Room Tip: This is probably better than the rest of the hotels in this area. If you are a hardcore nature lover...

We went to chakrata reading good reviews of this place but were shocked to see the status of the hotel. The location is good but the hotel itself is in need of repair maintanance and good management. We went in december end and it actually snowed there but there was no arrangement for heating the rooms. There was no electricity, no gas for gas heater and the fire wood had ran out so no fireplace could be lit. The windowpanes were broken and cold wind came gushing in. The rooms looked as if they had not been dusted and cleaned for months. The food was pathetic. In short if you go to Chakrata avoid this place.
