“A place of beauty and peace”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

Located about an hour by car from Gir in Gujrat, the Somnath Temple is a magnificent complex. Bearing in mind the sheer number of visitors that throng the temple, there are elaborate security arrangements, although the authorities make every attempt to ensure not too much time is spent on this before you get darshan. There are designated areas for everything - from the car park to rest rooms to street vendors and finally into the temple complex. Keep in mind you aren't allowed to carry anything except your own personal self inside - so mobiles, purses, cameras, shoes all need to be deposited at the cloak room/shoe center. Once inside, you will get to see the revered shrine - we visited at noon and managed to catch the Aarti at 12.15pm - which also meant much lesser crowds than morning/evening. The temple complex has beautiful visibility to the Arabian Sea - benches where you can sit and enjoy the cool sea breeze even if the sun is shining down hard.. although the temple and beach is walled off, the view by itself is fabulous. All in all - a must visit to this beautiful Jyotirlinga shrine at the tip of Gujrat!

“A temple with History”
Reviewed May 24, 2012

Somnath temple stands at the shore of the Arabian ocean on the western corner of Indian subcontinent in Veraval District of Gujarat State. This pilgrimage is one of the oldest and finds its reference in the ancient texts like Skandpuran, Shreemad Bhagavat, Shivpuran etc. It is the holy place of the Aadi Jyotirling Shree Somnath Mahadev and the sacred soil from where Bhagvan Shri Krishna took his last journey to his neejdham ( Dont forget to visit Bhalkatirth, the temple with a unique idol of Lord Krishna along with the hunter who shot the Lord in his feet with his spear).
Set in a beautiful location, the place is generally easily accessible (without much rush), except during Mahashivratris and the Hindu Sawan month. It is a symbol of eternal conflict, resilience and Unity of Indian people.( A brief glimpse at history of this temple will surely enhance the visit experience).Best time to visit the temple is during early morning Aarti at 6.
It is well connected by road from Rajkot. Nearby attractions include Diu(3 hours drive), Gir national park(less than two hours drive, the last abode of the asiatic lion) and Dwarka Dhaam (4hrs drive via Porbander).
Finding a good hotel was a problem till a year back. However now few decent hotels have come up near the temple.
A must visit place for persons having interest in Hindu Religion and History.

“Excellent temple”

This temple is part of India's glorious history. The temple has been renovated nicely and is very neat and clean. The temple complex is well maintained. The light and sound show is also very good.

“Superbly located”
Reviewed March 1, 2012

Somnath Temple is on the western coast of Gujarat and is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of the God Shiva.
Its located on sea shore but temple is built on a raised platform, which is approx 2 stories high from the shore. There is protective wall on this side. When I visited the temple 6 yrs back and that time the sea beach next to the temple was open for public and I had seen people taking bath in sea. But this time it was different, govt had put big boulders on beach next to temple wall to protect temple wall from sea waves. Waves are quite strong and volatile here. So there is no beach at the back of temple.
Temple premises are clean. There is stone slabs pathway around main shrine for walking. It is also clean and smooth. There are beaches on sea facing side of temple and one can sit & enjoy the beautiful view and lovely wind coming from sea. Very serene.
Inside the main spectrum, there is a big Jyotirlingam and its decorated few time every day. If you have time, watch the process as it is quite interesting process. There are two aarti's every day, one at 7.00 AM and one at 7.00 PM. According to me, its a must attend. Even a non believer feels very good inside the temple.
You can view sunset from the temple premises. Its beautiful.
IMP: You can not carry practically anything inside temple. Only money and credit cards are allowed that too in some plastic, paper or cloth bag. No bags, camera, mobile phones etc are allowed. So you either leave these in hotel room or keep in clock room outside the temple. They keep your stuff in locker and give you keys.
