We have been regular visitors to the Green Dragon in the last two or three years since it came under the control of Old English Inns, who also own the White Hart in Braintree. Food and service were always excellent. But no more. Having visited three times in the past three months it is noticeable that something has changed and it's not for the better. We had heard rumours of a decline in service and this was something we encountered on the first of our three visits when one young barmaid was trying to serve at the bar and wait tables at the same time all on her own. Eventually one of the kitchen staff helped her out but he was hardly dressed for the part. On the second and third visits it was the quality of food that also seemed to have declined. The steak and ale pie isn't what it was! More worryingly on the latter, lunchtime, visit the fire alarm kept going off but noone offered a reassuring word or even apology for the disturbance. We're a little reluctant to give the dragon a fourth chance but we'll keep an eye on other reviews and take it from there.

Although very busy and we did not book a table we sat in the bar area which was nice enough. The staff came across polite and appeared happy. Me and my partner both ordered the Sunday roast, the quality was lovely, the meat so tender and lovely crisp roast potatoes however the quantity wasn't there. The meat wasn't really enough, could of done with double. When passing other people's dishes such as fish and chips looked nice.

Having been to this restaurant some years ago before it was taken over I still remember to this day the roast beef I had which was excellent in terms of quality and quantity.
This time it was completely different, to start with the meat on the plate could not have weighed more than 3oz hardly enough for a starter let alone a main course. The meat had been pre cooked sliced thinly and reheated to order which meant there was very little taste in the meat, the roast potatoes looked like they had been pre boiled and finished in the fryer. Worst to come was the mash potato which was greyish in colour and had a skin all around as if it had been pre cooked, pre portioned and reheated in a micro wave.
On the plus side the food was piping hot and the vegetables were nice, I have to say the staff were friendly and the refit of the restaurant was impressive.
There are many local establishments that serve Sunday roasts and most of them do a good job but to charge over £9.00 for pre cooked tasteless meat with roast potatoes that were fried with grey mashed potatoes is an insult to the consumer!
Did I send this back - Yes.

The wife and I stopped off here for a lunch time snack. It was 16:45 and very quiet (which could be due to newly opened Hungry Horse down the road).

We were welcomed warmly and the young waitress seated us and took a drinks order. The lunchtime menu was very varied, we opted for a Whitebait starter to share between us, the portion was large and I am glad we opted to share.

We then had a Steak and Red Onion ciabatta roll and a Battered Fish goujon sandwich with a side of chips, (the idea was to go half and half and share). The sandwiches were delicious, served hot and the steak was tender and cooked perfectly.

We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch time visit to the Green Dragon and would thoroughly recommend it.

Main disappointment was that the roast potatoes were underdone and were not actually roast - just cooked with a not very crisp coating added. Plate (and food) not piping hot.
