Wonderful staff and remote location. It's about a 15 minute drive from Hurtigruten or from the airport. We stayed in a lovely cabin where we had a wood stove and dry firewood ready to go, in addition to electric heating.

We came only for one night, to complete a "crab safari" which is, in my opinion, the only reason to come to Kirkenes.

Our trip overall was a little too much hurrying without enough alone time, so if I could do it again we would have stayed a few more nights at Sollia Gjestegård.

Stepped off the midnatsol cruise ship and decided to stay out of the city.. hire a car...very good choice, wonderful, warm and very comfortable ..their is a choice of accommodation types.
Dog sledding, snow mobiles and wonderful Restaurant, all at this delightful place.
The views of frozen lakes, mountains and the sun shining on this glistening winter wonderland, also the chance to experience the snow mobile with a very experienced local guide (son of the hotel owner) driving over frozen lakes and coming to a tented camp in the mountains will never be repeated. Testing the thickness of the ice ..
Tasted Reindeer and finished with a a chocolate muffin with melted chocolate in the center at the glass fronted Restaurant. Picture perfect, loads of snow and 500 meters from Russian border.

We stayed in cabin 5 after leaving the Hurtigruten ship. We booked a husky trip and we were picked up from the boat. After leaving our bags in our cabin we went on a wonderful husky ride. You are dressed in an all in one suit and boots, and hats and gloves are available, so don't worry if you think you haven't got warm enough clothing. Useful to bring with you: A 'buff' around the neck, and sunglasses. We didn't actually need these on our trip as it was relatively warm ( -5 !). The huskies are kept in the best kennels we saw on our trip. They all have names, are looked after very well and have lots of exercise. They love going out. (We got to walk with two puppies while we stayed there - Gucci and Prada I think they were called. Very cute as they kept jumping into deep snow.) The husky sledding is fantastic. One of the best things we have ever done, in an amazing beautiful wilderness. You will go through trees and on a frozen lake. Much much better than anything offered at the snow hotel ( the Hurtigruten option). Me and my husband had a team to ourselves - I think I managed to confuse my dogs with my braking ( or lack of it) - the happy but bewildered looks they gave me were hilarious...But the dogs had as much fun as we did. We had lunch afterwards (included) which was lovely - as a vegetarian I was given a breaded camembert ( or similar,) roll, and salad
The guys running the place were great . Trine is one of those rare people who is great with animals and people. Rune and Nials ( sorry about spelling??) were so friendly and helpful, especially as they must hear the same questions etc from hapless tourists all the time. They all work hard to ensure you have a lovely time during your stay.
We got a lift into Kirkenes the next day and then walked up to the Snow Hotel from town - about half an hour walk ( at the top of the hill follow the path around the lake and under bridge). Do order a taxi before you leave, as we had to ask a coach driver to call one as even the taxi office in kirkenes was closed. The taxi was about 400kr back (14km) to the cabins.
The cabin was lovely - felt like a mini house. I could have stayed there for a long time. I loved being so near to the huskies ( no noise probs etc) and the countryside. The cabin had good temperature control, but we preferred to turn the heating down and use the easy to light woodburner ( free wood). Such a homely feel. The scenery is gorgeous. There was thick snow when we were there. We walked up to a nearby viewpoint on a hill - bit of a scramble, but good fun and great view - you could see Nickel in Russia in the distance. There is also walks along the husky and snow mobile tracks which are easier to walk. It was magical to walk up into the woods - so silent in the snow. Sadly the heavy cloud prevented us viewing the the northern lights ( luckily we had seen them on the boat on way up). The cabins don't face north but across a snowy lake, however a short walk takes you away from any civilisation so you can view the lights from the hill tops if they appeared. Strangely there is a bright light on the side of the main house - i'm sure anyone staying here is aiming to get away from the lights of kirkenes and therefore wouldn't expect or want this bright night lighting as it spoils the idyllic remote setting. However I asked Rune and he did turn the light off when there was a chance of a clear night - so do remember to mention this as it would spoil any northern light viewings.
There is a Jacuzzi, but I was disappointed that there was a shelter over the top of it, and it was 390kr per person! so we didn't try it. There are snow shoes and cross country skis to try out. The breakfast was ok and the coffee machine is great. But, we had been spoilt by the breakfasts on offer on the hurtigruten and being vegetarian( which I had notified them) I didn't appreciate the bacon draped over the eggs:-) It doesn't seem great value( cereal, sliced cheese, bread and those eggs) We managed to bring food(flapjacks, rice, falafel mix etc) from the UK ( and fruit etc from the boat) and made our own meals in the kitchenette which worked really well. There was a restaurant and I'm sure the chef is brilliant, but we needed to stay within budget, and the UK is light years ahead in terms of cuisine, especially when cooking for vegetarians so we gave it a miss. I understand the Russian president is visiting there soon, so may be worth investigating if you have the funds!

We loved this place. The setting is gorgeous. A real winter wonderland as a previous reviewer mentioned. It has a wonderful laid back feel and we met some interesting people - something not so easy to do in a city hotel. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: Cabin 5 is at the far end and only has a shelter in front of it so there is a nice view of the lake...

We stayed here two night as part of an Inn Travel package and the accommodation comfortable but cabins better than single room with kitchenette which was rather cramped. Husky dog sledging was a fantastic and genuine experience and we had fun at night in the 'wilderness camp' around the fire and in the tent cooking sausages waiting in vain to get a viewing of the Northern Lights. The meal in the restaurant by the lake was good and has a lovely setting. Great place in a isolated setting and friendly owners.

Room Tip: chose a cabin not rooms 8,-10

We spent two nights at on of Sollia's 2-bedroom cottages before we boarded the southbound Hurtigruten boat. Although it was very cold (- 25 degrees), the cottages were warm and cosy. There was also a fire we lit the first evening (the restaurant was closed due to Xmas holiday, so we catered for ourselves). The two bedrooms are tiny, but practical including seperate heating. You should be aware that the double bed is very small (130 cm).

The people are very friendly but quiet. The email exchange before arrival was a bit slow, but in the end we had everything we needed. A simple, but healthy and generous breakfast is served in the charming main building at a reasonable price.

The guesthouse has a superb restaurant (see separate reviews for Gapahuken restaurant), as well as a Saune (expensive) and activities such as a Husky tour (expensive as all Husky tours). The latter can be highly recommended, both the huskies and the ladies looking after them and the guests know what they do and the landscape is stunningly beautiful.

I wished we could have stayed longer!!!

We arrived at kirkenes airport to be picked up by the shuttle bus and delivered straight to the door of our room. Traveling with a friend, we were upgraded to separate rooms as they had the availability at no extra charge. We spent three days here and loved the atmosphere and the friendly staff just made our stay so much easier. A totally family run business, we did the dog sled safari, ate at the restaurant and did our own walks. The breakfast is filling and the dinners in the restaurant over looking the lake are scrumptious. We left with a smile on our face to be delivered into town centre for our ferry trip. Half way there the driver pulled over as the owner of the hotel had forgotten to give is a parting souvenir. He drove half way into town to personally deliver these to us.. A great place to stay in the wilderness. I cannot recommend this highly enough. Thank you and well done indeed !!

This place is just great! There are the mainbuilding that served as hospital during World War II, a motel, some spacious cabins and a restaurant called "Gapahuken"(the restaurant is situated near the shore of "Pikevannet" lake). There are also a dogfarm here (they won`t disturb you!). The place are to be found just outside Kirkenes, very idyllic scenery and not more than some hundred metres from the Russian border. The owners and the rest of the staff are all serviceminded, kind and hardworking people. The cottages are just marvellous! Contains everything you need, even a fireplace. Beds are comfortable and everything is clean. We - parents, a daughter age 20 and a son age 12 - enjoyed staying in the middle of a very beautiful part of Norway. We`ll sure revisit this place!
