We stayed here for 4 nights in January as we wanted to try and see the Northern Lights and go to the Snow Hotel - probably 3 nights would have been adequate as there is not too much to do. We flew in from Oslo airport and got the Flybuss (cost NOK 85). This leaves from the airport and drops you off at your hotel. On our arrival at the hotel we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel has lovely unobstructed views of the quay and within very easy walking distance of the centre. Our room was very comfortable, warm and very comfortable beds. We had breakfast included which was adequate and the hotel had a tea/coffee machine in the lobby so you had constant access to a hot drink. Free WIFI - code is given on arrival and any tours can be booked at the hotel reception. We ate in the town, finding a very nice restaurant called Surf and Turf. On our last evening the Northern Lights appeared over our hotel to make a lovely end to our trip.

While we were here we did go on a Northern Lights trip as well and were very lucky to see them. As we were standing in at least minus 10 temperatures our guide had brought some hot berry juice and biscuits for us. When one lot of lights disappeared he drove us to another location. We had lovely showing. Also we went to see the Snow Hotel and we also went to the Border Museum. Kirkenes has a very interesting history.

A great place to stay for a few days, friendly, comfortable and convenient and people everywhere were very helpful ans spoke very good English. Would like to return during Summer months.

On our return the Flybuss picked us up at the hotel to take us back to the airport.

February 2013 - WINTER. We stayed 3 days and 2 nights. The view out over the frozen sea, a the front of the hotel, is spectacular. I'd suggest asking for a 'sea view' room, if you want a great outlook. The dining room and breakfast area looks out over the sea through floor-to- ceiling glass. Commendations to the chefs. The breakfast bar is fantastic, offering a wide range of foods to suit any diet. The hotel is in walking distance to the town - which has a shopping mall. I'd suggest you catch a taxi into town if you're not used to freezing temperatures in winter - temps were around Minus 20 degrees Celsius during the day! (sometimes colder, with the wind chill factor) If walking to town, make sure you have suitable footwear as the roads and paths are very slippery with ice. Shuttles for a variety of tours all call at the hotel to pick-up and return guests. The NORTHERN LIGHTS came out to play in the sky over Kirkenes TWICE while we were there - which was a fantastic bonus. You can view them through the large glass windows at the hotel, or drive out into the night, away from town lights - which we did - (Rental cars are available in town). The rooms are clean, beds comfortable and warm, bathrooms well appointed, and as well as air-con, the windows also open a little if you want fresh air. This hotel is centrally located and convenient for many activities. There's a free, secure locked room in which to store your luggage, if you arrive early or have time to spare after you check out, should you wish to do other activities to fill in time. All the staff were friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: The hotel is located at the edge of the frozen sea. Ask for a 'sea view' room, if you like...

You really only have a couple of lodging choices here. The Thon is by far the best choice. Clean. Great service. Modern. Right on the water. Restaurant is above average for the city. Easy 3 min walk the the city center. Maybe 1 km from Coastal Express facility

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the sea. Even if it has 2 twins :-)

We stayed at the Thon Hotel Kirkenes in March and we absolutely loved it. This is a very modern and new hotel in a great location overlooking the Barents Sea. Our room had heated flooring throughout including the bathroom floor tiles. The bed and pillow was super comfortable. flat screen TV with loads of different TV channels and the most amazing view of the Barents Sea which was covered in ice and the back-drop of mountains covered in snow. In fact the entire hotel was covered in thick snow and it was freezing cold but we absolutely loved our stay. The restaurant served very nice food and the breakfast was your typical Norwegian buffet with loads of options to choose from. The restaurant and front desk staff were extremely friendly, helpful and shared some really nice stories with us - thoroughy recommend this hotel

Thon Hotel in Kirkenes is a nice modern hotel with good sized well-appointed rooms. Some of the rooms and the dining area have a great view overlooking the water. I also appreciated the free tea and coffee available in the dining area. This is a good hotel to use as a base for the activities available in Kirkenes such as the King Crab safari and Huskie sled rides.

Not much to see and do in Kirkenes so a comfortable hotel is essential. Very modern hotel with a good restaurant and a very good buffet breakfast (omelettes and waffles cooked to order). Room on the small side (common in Norway) but nice view across the bay.

3 minute walk to downtown (joke - downtown consists of 3 streets).

We got a great rate for this hotel some months prior to travelling. Modern, spotlessly clean hotel with a fantastic location right on the water, frozen as I write this! Checkout is 12pm and even though we arrived early around 10am, we were allowed to have access to our room straight away. Great breakfast from 7-11am, friendly staff, all the buses for tourist attractions leave from here. Spacious lobby area with free tea and coffee where you can hang out as long as you like while waiting for a flight, as we were. The small Main Street of kirkenes is a couple of minutes walk. We saw the northern lights right outside the hotel. Ask the receptionist for directions for the little hut 200 metres down the road (you cant go in though) where there is not so much ambient light if you want a lights viewing spot. Great value hotel.

Room Tip: Single bed rooms face the water and those with a double bed don't, but the lobby area has fantas...
