Rio appartments were pleasantly surprising, after all the negative reviews I wasn't expecting to much. We went as a couple young 38 and 44. After a long airport transfer! The poor man got lost, another story! Anyway what should of been half an hour took nearly two hours I wasn't expecting the apartment to be so inviting, spotlessly clean and the smell of fresh white starched linen and towels, room got cleaned twice, we there 7 nights. Only suggestion is try and get a room facing the pool were you will get the sun, we were at the side of hotel and didn't get any sun on balcony. It didn't matter to us though because we spent a lot of time by the pool and in the Rio bar and restaurant.

The Rio bar and restaurant is run by a gorgeous couple called Isobella and Louis and this is theirs independently. Honestly we ate there for the majority of the holiday because I knew I wouldn't be disappointed it was that good, from the breakfasts, the eggs were beautiful, OMG the steaks were amazing and everything else in between was to die for. I didn't get to meet the chef but he is the son of Isobella and Louis who are again gorgeous people. Good, Honest, Real, Sincere, Genuine. I could go on. Please believe me best food ever. The bar is cool with a pool table and karaoke on a Thursday and Sunday, We had a laugh. Would recommend to anyone because the taxi only €5 to marina. Loved every second. Cheers Isobella and Louis x

Room Tip: I would suggest room facing pool

A good basic hotel with fully equipped kitchen and a small balcony. You have to ring 24hrs prior to departure and also from airport and let them know what time you will arrive as reception not manned during evenings. This was not mentioned by our booking agent but found this out on tripadvisor. Clean apartment, towels/tea towels changed regularly. Not enough sun beds and people put towels out early. Just remove them. Beds were a little on the firm side but not too bad. We went last week of September and you certainly didn't need airconditioning as it was quite chilly at night but in the summer would be different. Small shop at bottom of hill on left but not very well stocked. Larger Spa about 20 minutes away. Long walk into marina but taxis were about 5 euros. Restaurants nearby - old village again about 15-20 minutes walk and also Pirata is very good. Rio restaurant was OK. Buses to Faro and Albufeira nearby but be careful coming back from Faro as the express bus goes a different route and doesnt stop near Hilton Hotel. Beach is not near hotel but about 20-25 minutes away. On the whole it was very good for the price.

Room Tip: Do not choose a room facing pool as people are very noisy in bar on karyoke nights and some choose to swim at 3am

On arrival time 09.00am the reception was closed until 09.45 when the receptionist decided to arrive (was not a good start) . When entering the apartment which was very basic , no air conditioning, bed sheets only get changed if you are staying longer than 7 days, towels get changed every 2 days, beds were very uncomfortable.
Around the pool they only had 22 sun beds and everyone takes their on towels, no pool towels.
Vilamoura has a fab marina with bars and restaurants but to walk it takes you 20 mins ( if you are a good walker). The only plus we could give the Rio Apartments is that it has a lovely Steak restaurant which is attached to the pool area, could not fault their food. Would not recommend the Rio Apartments looking forward to staying next year at The Tivoli Hotel.
No wi-fi in rooms

Room Tip: Do not say at the Rio Apartments AVOID

Very clean basic apartments, it had everything we needed .... Swimming pool, lounges, small bar and resturant .... Not to far from the marina, just a 20 min walk, supermarket 2 mins away..... Bus stop nearby and taxis quite cheap ... Two lovely beaches, great restaurants and cafés in nearby resorts..... Just what the doctor order for a relaxing break in the sun

My friend and I booked these apartments with lowcostholidays for 8 days at the beginning of September. This was our first time in Portugal and we had a brilliant time in Vilamoura, especially on the beach which had beautiful sand and sea. There were a few issues with the apartment but overall not too bad.

Negatives:
• No wifi in rooms, only in reception
• Extremely uncomfortable bed – hard and had lots of springs that dig into you. Also the “blanket” (more like a curtain) on the bed was made from an uncomfortable material
• Booking was also inaccurate, we were told that we would have a twin room but ended up with a double SOFA bed. My friend and I were alright with sharing but it wasn’t ideal.
• Didn’t expect much due to price of rooms but expected more than a sofa bed
• No air conditioning or ceiling fan – not a problem as we went at the beginning of September but would be an issue for people going in July and August when the evenings are stifling

Positives:
• Nice view from balcony
• Apartment very clean
• 15 minute walk to Vilamoura – quite a direct route (would advise you to ask at reception for directions and map)
• Vilamoura beach was beautiful - sea lovely, clear and cold, and sand very soft
• Sun beds expensive on the beach – but not a problem as we just put our towels on the sand. It is worth noting that this was more comfortable than our bed.
• We went into Vilamoura every day so didn’t stay much around the pool so can’t really comment but noticed it was very quiet and relaxed
• Food in downstairs restaurant nice and reasonably priced
• Reception staff very friendly and was open at the times they said they would be:
-> helpful with cases when we had an 11.00am check out and 7.00pm flight. We were able to lock them in a storage area.
-> helpful calling a taxi for us to Aquashow water park and recommended it because it was cheaper and closer than another one we were asking about.

Advice for prospective guests:
• Restaurants and bars on the actual marina were expensive but if you go one street back from it to places like the Piano Bar, Cocktail Cod Bar, and the Irish Pubs as they’re much more reasonably priced.
• Vilamoura wasn’t brilliant for shopping, especially as we were on a budget but we went to Quarteira, the next town along, and that was good for shopping. Buses every hour or so from the stop on the main road into Vilamoura.
• If you are arriving in the evening as we did, reception will not be open so you need to head down to the restaurant and ask for them to call the owner for you. The waiter was very nice and offered to make us some toast if we were hungry as the kitchen had closed.
• Furnishings other than sofa bed very good. Little table with two chairs, outside table, shower and bathroom nice and clean, lots of crockery, cutlery and utensils such as an electric whisk but not a cheese grater or baking trays.

Would consider returning as I enjoyed being so close to Vilamoura and had a brilliant time on holiday here. Not sure if there are sofa beds in all the rooms so we may have just been unlucky. We did not complain about the bed as we should have done because we didn't want the hassel, so that may have made a difference.
