“Just what we expected!”
Reviewed July 23, 2012

Me and my boyfriend stayed at Rio Apartments for 2 weeks in June 2012 and had, overall, a lovely holiday!

Pros:
Room was a good size and it was lovely and clean.
Had toaster, microwave, kettle, pots and pans etc (everything you would expect).
There was a shop literally down the road.
The pool and the area surrounding it was cleaned on a daily basis.
There are lots of lovely places to eat on the Marina.
Boat trips etc are reasonably priced and very enjoyable!! (Purchase tickets on the marina).
The beaches are beautiful.

Cons:
When we arrived (at 10pm) the reception was closed and we had to ring a number which was left on the desk to get someone to come down and give us our key. Surely they knew what time approximately we would be arriving? Personally this was a pretty bad start to the holiday as it make me feel a little uneasy!

The corridors in the apartment seemed really dark and gloomy!

It is a walk into Vilamora and to the marina etc and I wasn't too keen on the walk at night! However through out the day it was a lovely pretty walk and taxi's never cost us more than 5euros on the way home!

Vilamora is a very sleepy town through the day however come 9pm and the marina is absolutely packed!!

If you are looking for a cheap sunny getaway we would recommend this place :)

When booking this holiday I was a liitle sceptical after reading previous reviews. I was however not expecting the faults that I experienced. The elcetrical plugs on the wall of our studio were hanging from wall showing exposed wiring. Even though this was the case a lamp had been plugged into one! As described by other visitors the kitchen was very tired and badly in need of updating. The kitchen festoon blinds were broken and the only way to get daylight was to hook them over curtain rail. There was a leaking pipe in the corridor outside our room and towels were left on the floor to soak up water for the duration of our holiday. I approached reception regarding these problems and was told "they will be fixed". Needless to say nothing was done. There were also problems with other guests using the swimming pool after midnight. No security to stop this noise nuisance.
Iwould not recomend this hotel to anyone.

stayed at the rio appartments in june 2012, for a week and everything was great room was clean and staff were friendly and helpful. The room was nice and large and had all the stuff there to prepare a meal if you wanted to and a supermarket 5mins down the road. me and my husband had a gound floor appartment right next to the pool room 12. There is no air con in the appartments but where we stayed the appartment stayed cool allday and night.
If your on a buget then i recommend a holiday here without a doubt. 20mins from the marina for all the main restaurants which are a little pricey but they all have some good deals on menu. Would defo recommend the restaurant next to the appartments. The Stone steak house.
One dish would reommend without a doubt is the stone steak it has got to be the best steak we've ever tasted and you cook it how you like it. We also went on the allday cruise and had bbq on the beach and a tour around the caves it was 35 euros each and it was great thing to do. We spent a few days down the beach nice clean again perfect one tip is buy a parasol works out about 5 or 7 euros if you rent on your paying 15 euros for the day. We are looking to rebook in september for another week.

Room Tip: ground floor room 12

We stayed here for a week, June 2012. The apartment was clean and well equipped, we would highly recommend a holiday here. Twenty mins or so from the Marina, and supermarket nearby. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: The poolside rooms can be a bit noisy.

Me and my male friend stayed here for a week in June and what can I say.. it was brilliant! The company we booked it through got our flight times wrong so when we arrived at reception at 1pm the receptionist had been told it was 9pm but didn't cause a fuss just gave us our keys no problem. Twin room as requested, clean and and a lot nicer than expected considering the $ paid. We were lucky enough to meet MANY amazing people and that's all part of the holiday meeting people and having a laugh! Pool clean even when you decide to jump in at 3am...4am...6am hahaha. Bar staff amazing (luigi and Isobell) really, really friendly to us and especially me when I missed my flight home (never go to a nightclub til 6am when your flights at 9, bad idea) they let me use their personal laptop to print off boarding ticket and made sure I got a reputable taxi etc. Brilliant :) Will be back... UH OH! xxx

We stayed at the Rio apartments for a week in June 2012, and to be honest we were pleased with the accomodation, we had Room 303 which overlooked the frontage, so was fairly quiet, although you do get aircarft noise as its on the Faro flightpath. The one bed apartment was big, especially the lounge/diner with a seperate recently refurbished kitchen, which had microwave, kettle and toaster, even had iron and ironing board, the apartment was very clean, although the furniture and doors were very dated, but overall provided good value. The beds were very firm, but we prefer it that way. The reception is closed at night and some parts of the day, as the receptionist covers for other sites, which could be a pain for night arrivals, one of the electrical sockets was a bit dodgy, but reported and fixed the same day, so 10/10, and the water heater failed on the third day, but was fixed same day, so again 10/10, the pool was fairly clean, but you do get a few leaves in it as it is surrounded by well kept gardens, there is an on-site restaurant and bar which provides good value meals, we only visited once as we ate elsewhere/cooked in but the meal was good, and there is a well stocked supermarket about 5 minutes away, its about 20 minute walk to the marina which is "nice" but a little bit contrived, and the food can be a bit pricey, I was surprised at the lack of shopping in the marina area. There are not many retaurants around the Rio, and the surrounding area was very quiet, I would say only about 5% were occupied. I have mixed feelings about Villamoura, I found it very pretty and nice and green, but it lacks soul and character, especially compared with Albufeira and Quarteira which is just down the road, Albufeira had a fantastic selection of market like shopping with a great beach and views, a lot of portugese holiday at Quarteira, and it shows with cheaper restaurants, and a nicer atmosphere, with a great character. We hired a car for the duration (transfer times is only about 20 mins by car) and got all of our shopping at Pingo Doce (about 5 mins by car), which is like a Portugese Sainsburys, with excellent choice, and a good fish counter. Albuifera was fantastic, and on the way to it roadside sellers have 5kg of beautiful oranges for 1 euro!, yes 1 euro!!!!. It was our first time to Portugal/Algarve, great if you are a couple, not so good for kids, although the beaches seemed ok, but it is a decent walk, or you need a car. The Rio really needs some new furnture and perhaps Wi-Fi in the reception area, also the TV has no english channels.

Room Tip: Rooms on the frontage are quieter, rooms overlooking the pool can be noisy during night and day

For a common or garden Self Catering, the Rio apartments are brilliant! I've never come across an apartment so well equipped, It consists of a good sized bedroom, seperate kitchen (don't bother bringing any utencils, they're all there including an electric whisk!) The bathroom contains a shower over a bath, the bath being very comfortable. There is a good sized lounge area with a table and four chairs, couch and television. Our apartment had two balconies with a plastic table and chairs. Strangely though, there was no hair drier.
There is an excellent restaurant within the compound serving delicious food and the prices are reasonable, try the stone cooked steak...fantastic!
Now the downside. There was no receptionist when we arrived, then we noticed throughout the week that we stayed, the shutters were down more times than they were up. The message, 'back soon' or a telephone number displayed for you to ring to get your room number and keys.
The grounds were spotless. but the room cleaners were almost as invisible as the receptionist!
We booked in on the Thursday and didn't see a cleaner for four days. Remembering that paper isn't to flushed down the loo, you can perhaps share our concerns! We found out why on looking at the notes on the back of the door (No point going to reception...) This notice said that we should take all our rubbish out of the room, but didn't say where to put it. My wife just left the rubbish in a plastic carrier bag outside the cleaners station.
If you want a 'chill out' holiday, this is the place for you, but if you like browsing around shops, forget it! there is a store just down the road and that's it. The walk to the Marina takes about twenty five minutes through very nice park land and you will find all the bars and shops you will need. I beleive that the taxi fare is about eight euros. On the second last day of our holidays, we did find a small bar close to the shop. Nice spot and friendly barman.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the pool area and bar/restaurant but we were not disturbed.
